Curtis “Curt” Berkey Curtis Deane Berkey, 77, Rossville, Kansas, passed away at his home, surrounded by his family, Thursday, June 11, 2020, following an heroic battle against pancreatic cancer. Curt was born January 13, 1943, to the late Don and Mary Jane Nicholson Berkey. A lifelong resident of Rossville, Curt graduated from Rossville High School in 1961 and attended Kansas State University. He was drafted by the LA Dodgers farm team as a pitcher, but a combine accident put an end to those dreams. On October 25, 1989, Curt and JoAnne (Conway) McDonnell were married, enjoying more than 30 years together. For the last 13 years they were pleased to leave Kansas winters behind for the warmth of Mesa, Arizona. Curt was very proud of farming for almost 58 years. A life-long educator in the farming community, Curt mentored many young farmers. He was old school and proud that his rows were straighter than those being put in by GPS. A very honorable man, Curt loved his family and friends and his presence will be greatly missed. Grateful to have shared Curt’s life are his wife, JoAnne; children, Keith Berkey (Kim) Rossville, Angela Shriner (Kevin) Cape Coral, Florida, Shannon Frodge, Mobile, Alabama, Brad McDonnell, Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Kalli Shriner (Jav Palomo) Boca Raton, Florida, Kohen Shriner (Lilly Sheridan) Las Cruces, New Mexico, Skyler McDonnell, Flordia; great-granddaughter, Molly and her mother, Harlie Nemecheck, Rossville; sister, PJ Berkey, Kansas City, Kansas; brother-in-law, Jamie Conway (Gayle) Topeka; and nieces and nephews. Curt’s family will greet friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614. A Celebration of Curt’s Life will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Inurnment will be private at Rossville Cemetery. | 4002 |  | Obituary- Berkey, Don Don Berkey Don Berkey, age 94, Rossville, passed away Mon., Sept. 7, 2009 at Rossville Health Care Center. Don was born January 1, 1915 in Silver Lake, KS, the son of, Charles and Lyda Dean Berkey. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1939 with a business degree. Don worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for over 40 years, retiring as Assistant Treasurer. He was a member of Rossville American Legion Post 31 and was a member of Masonic Lake Lodge #50. Don was a member of the Citizen Pottawatomie Nation. He was the third oldest living member in the State of Kansas. Don married Mary Jane Nicholson on Nov. 15, 1941. She preceded him in death on Oct. 21, 2004. Don and Mary Jane traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe and he was an avid reader of The Wall Street Journal, bridge player and golfer. Don is survived by his children, Curt and JoAnne Berkey, Ross¬ville and Pam Berkey Sibert, Kansas City; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7p.m. Sun. at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Rd, Topeka, KS 66614. A memorial service will be at 11a.m. Mon. at the funeral home. | 4004 |  | Obituary- Berkey, Ellen 1 MRS. ELLEN BERKEY Mrs. Ellen Berkey, 90, formerly of Rossville, died at the home of her son, Wednesday, in Russell. She was born in Somerset. Pa., November 11, 1850 and came to Kansas in 1885. She lived at Rossville until four years ago, when she went to Russell to make her home with her son. She was a member of the Rossville Methodist church. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Edith Zickefoose of Stapleton, Neb.; two sons F. B. Berkey of Russell and Charles Berkey of Rossviile; 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday at the Rossville Methodist church, and burial will be in the Ross¬ville cemetery. The body is at the Parker Mortuary. ELLEN BERKEY Funeral services for Mrs. Ellen Berkey were held Saturday after¬noon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist church, with the Rev. Don Jones officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Don Berkey accompanied Mrs. Irene Campbell. Pallbearers were grandsons: Don Berkey, Homer Berkey, Robert Ber¬key, Arthur Berkey, W. B. Berkey, and Bill Burgett. He was born Dec. 16, 1886, in Rossville and had lived in Russell since 1917. He was a signal maintenance man for Union Pacific Railroad before he retired in 1954. He was a charter member of First Christian Church in Russell and was a 50-year member of Russell Lodge No. 177, AF&AM. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Lucy Macha, 704 Polk, Topeka, and Mrs. Helen Hill, Sunland, Calif.; four sons, Robert Berkey, Denver, Colo., Homer Berkey and Pete Berkey, both of Russell, and Arthur Berkey, North Hollywood, Calif.; and 13 grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in First Christian Church, Russell. Delia Lodge No. 419, AF&AM, will conduct graveside services at 3 p.m. Thursday in Rossville Cemetery. | 4007 |  | Obituary- Berkey, Francis 2 F. G. BERKEY Francis Guy, son of Charles and Ellen (Maust) Berkey, was born December 16, 1886 at Rossville, Kansas. His death occurred at the City Hospital in Russell, Kansas, on February 13, 1968 at 12:30 a. m. His age was 81 years, 1 month, and 28 days. A resident of Russell since 1917, Guy received his education and training in the Rossville community. In 1910 he was united in marriage to the former Margaret Cuttle. Here were 8 children born to this marriage, two of whom preceded the parents in death. He engaged in carpentry work for a number of years and then took up Railroading. In 1917 he came with his family to Russell where he was Signal Maintainer for the U. P. Railroad until his retirement in 1953. After the death of his wife on December 29, 1924 he centered his interests in his home and family. Active in church, fraternal and community projects, he was instrumental in founding the present Christian Church in Russell and as a charter member, elder and Sunday School teacher since the church was organized, he truly served the Lord. A faithful member of the Masonic Lodge, he received his 50 year pin several years ago. In 1933 he remarried, to the former Elsie Morris who has stood by his side through the years as a helpmate, companion and step-mother. | |

She was born Aug. 3, 1894, at Rossville, the daughter of Joseph and Alma Mitchell Dean. Mrs. Berkey spent her life in the Rossville community. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Amaryllis Chapter No. 321 of Order of Eastern Star, both at Ross¬ville. She was married to Charles L. Berkey in 1913 at Rossville. He died Jan. 26, 1965. Survivors include a son, Donald D. Berkey, Rossville; three sisters, Mrs. Edna Bailey, Silver Lake, Mrs. Kate Maddox, Topeka, and Mrs. Emma Waltrip of Armona, Calif.; two brothers, Charles Dean, Silver Lake, and Delbert Dean, Topeka; two grandchildren and five great-grand- children. GUY BERKEY BURIED HERE TODAY The people of Rossville were shocked when the news came here of the death of Mrs. Guy Berkey last Monday afternoon at her home in Russell, Kansas. Complications ac¬companying child birth caused her death. The little child was buried with the mother. The body was brought to Rossville yesterday morning taken the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cottle, where it lay in state until the funeral this afternoon at 1:30 o’clock. The funeral service was held in the Christian church conducted by the Rev. Mr. G. C. Albin, pastor of the Rossville Methodist church. Interment was made in Rossville cemetery. Margaret Frances, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cottle, was born at West Liberty, Ky., Dec. 5, 1887, and departed this life Dec. 29, 1924, at the age of 37 years and 24 days. She was married to Guy Berkey of Rossville, Kans., May 17, 1911 and to this union was born eight children, two of whom died in infancy, the re¬maining six namely, Lucy, Robert, Homer, Winifred, Arthur and Helen with the husband survive. She also leaves her father and mother, sisters, and brothers, nieces, nephews and a host of friends to mourn the loss of a noble woman. At the age of 16 she joined the Baptist church, after¬wards becoming a member of the Christian church at this place, of which she remained a loyal member until her death. A dutiful daughter, a loving wife, a devoted mother, a kind and loving Christian friend and neighbor, she will be greatly missed. | |
| 4012 |  | Obituary- Berkey, Mary 2 Mary Jane Berkey ROSSVILLE — Mary Jane Berkey, 87, Rossville, passed away Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Rossville Valley Manor Nurs¬ing Home. Mary Jane was born Aug. 11, 1917, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the daughter of James and Margaret Borst Nicholson. She attended school in Slaton, Tex¬as, and graduated from Paseo High School in Kansas City. She attended Columbia College in Columbia, Mo., Julliard School of Music in New York and the American Conserva¬tory of Music in Chicago. Mary Jane married Don Ber¬key on Nov. 15, 1941. After World War II, they moved to Rossville where she taught piano and vocal music lessons for 37 years. She was a member of Music Study Club and Minerva Club in Topeka, and Rossville Pres¬byterian Church. She was a judge at statewide high school music competitions for a num¬ber of years, performed with community and church music groups, and was a member of the Rossville Community Library Board and the St. Mary’s Women Golf Club Board. Mary Jane and Don traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe and she was an avid reader, bridge player and golfer. She is survived by her hus¬band of 63 years, Don Berkey; a son and daughter-in-law, Curt and JoAnne Berkey, Rossville; a daughter, Pam Berkey Sibert, Kansas City; seven grandchil¬dren; and seven great¬grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kevin Bren¬nan Family Funeral Home in Topeka. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. | 4013 |  | Obituary- Berkey, W.B. Russell – W.B. “Pete” Berkey, 79, Russell, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 1996, at a Russell hospital. Mr. Berkey owned and operated Berkey Electric in Russell until he retired in the early 1980s. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was born Sept. 1, 1916, at Rossville, the son of Francis Guy and Margaret Cottle Berkey. He moved with his family to Russell while he was a young boy and he was graduated from Russell High School. Mr. Berkey was a member of First Christian Church and the Elks Lodge, and he was a life member of both of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all in Russell. He was married to Izetta E. Radke on Feb. 3, 1939, at Russell. She survives. Other survivors include a brother, Robert Berkey, Denver; and two sisters, Lucy Macha, Topeka, and Sally Hill, Sunland, Calif. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pohlman’s Memorial Chapel at Russell. Burial will be at Russell City Cemetery. Relatives and friends will meet from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Services were held at Hall Memorial Chapel, Lincoln, Kansas, Monday, February 28, 2 p.m., with Rev. Curt D. Boese in charge. The organist was Mrs. Otis Nelson with Mrs. Lyle Nelson and Mrs. Delbert Cossel providing local music. Casketbearers were Alan Ancell, Gary Webb, Vernon Berkley, Herbert Traulsen, Mark Berkley and Hal Berkley. Interment was at Lincoln Cemetery, Lincoln. He was with the Bank of Tescott 45 years. He was born Jan. 13, 1899, in rural Lincoln County, and operated a grain business at Quinter and Bunker Hill until 1924, when he moved to Tescott and began work at the bank. He was chairman of the boards of banks at Tescott, Stockton, Downs, Ben¬nington and Talmadge. He was a member of the United Me¬thodist Church, was a 32nd-Degree Ma¬son, and was a member of the ISIS Shrine, Quinter Masonic Lodge No. 410, AF&AM, and the American Legion, all at Tescott. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Paulina Berkley, at home; his mother, Mrs. Clara Mae Berkley; Salina; a daughter, Mrs. Arliene Matthews, Tescott; seven sons, Jack B. Berkley, Stockton; Robert B. Berkley, Salina; Jerry J. Berkley and Paul D. Berkley, both of Downs; Hal J. Berkley, Tescott; Don H. Berkley, Abilene, and Kent M. | 4016 |  | Obituary- Bernritter, Agnes Agnes Bernritter Agnes Marie Hutley Bernritter, 84, Topeka, Kansas, passed away Monday, October 30, 2017. Agnes was born January 12,1933, in St. Marys, Kansas, the daughter of Edward and Rose Marstall Hutley. Agnes attended Menoken Grade School and graduated from St. Marys High School. She worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield and retired as a supervisor. Agnes married Herman Vincent Bernritter on September 15,1972. They shared a great passion for polka dancing and traveling, following their favorite bands or just seeing the countryside. Agnes spent her retirement years volunteering at Midland Care Hospice, where she was honored with several awards for her dedication and service. Agnes also volunteered in the office at Mater Dei Grade School where many children got to know her as Aunt Aggie. She enjoyed being around the children, parents, faculty and staff and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the parish and school in 2011. Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Herman, in 2000, her parents, and brothers, Richard, Vincent, Leo and Ervin Hutley. Grateful to have shared her life are her sisters, Juanita Krilich (Matt), Peggy Clark (John), Karen Griffin (Ron) and Kay Payne (Larry); brother, Jerry Hutley (Vicki); sisters- in-law, Mary Alice Hutley, Lola Stevanus, Becky Hutley, Elenor Engle, Mary Harper and Merna Sturgis; and many beloved nieces and nephews. His mother, Mrs. Mary Berry, 1729 North Polk, Topeka, and his brother, Walter Berry of Wichita, went to El Monte to attend the services. Other relatives include another brother, Les¬ter Berry, Topeka; his wife, Mrs. Mary Berry; two daughters, Virginia and Paula Berry, a son, Kenneth Berry, and three grandchildren in El Monte Calif., and his step mother, Ethel Berry, Route 6. She was born January 23, 1927 in Haviland, KS the daughter of William P. and Alice (Carter) Thompson. Darlene grew up in Haviland and moved to Rossville in 1950. She graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics. After teaching Home Economics at Rossville and Greensburg High Schools, she became a homemaker, started a family and raised three children. Darlene served for a time as superintendent of the St. Stanislaus CCD Youth Education Program and was a proud member of the church's prayer chain. She had a passion for flower gardening and was a master seamstress. She married Leo Berry in Greensburg, KS in 1954. He preceded her in death on June 6, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter; Rhonda (Gary) Busse, Raymore, MO and two sons; Michael Berry, of Meriden, and Vincent (Stacy) Berry, of Topeka; a sister, Willa Handlin, of Townville, SC; along with 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2019 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Interment will follow in Rossville Cemetery. She was bom March 11, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York to Rodney and Grace (Kearney) Berry. Her brother Roy's family lives in Grand Junction, Colorado. Nephew Jeff Berry and niece Dawn Kincaid and Janae Hurshman remember Aunt Dot as a special person. After graduating from Wooster College, Wooster, Ohio she completed graduate courses at Teachers College (Columbia University), Union Theological Seminary, New York School for Social Research, and Mansfield College in Oxford England. From the 1970's through retirement her vocation was in in Ecumenical Ministry, serving in leadership positions on local state, regional,national, and international levels. In 2006 she received an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from the Theologiocal Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri in recognition of her many years membership. She was on the staff of Tulsa Metropolitan Ministries, Kansas Ecumenical Ministries, and the National of Churches in the areas of youth ministries and Christian education. She also filled leadership roles in United Church of Christ ministries on local state, regional boards and committees. She was an interim executive secretary for the International Council for the International Christian Youth Exchange, Geneva Switzerland. 1973-74;active in the National Association of Ecumenical Staff, 1978-87, and member U.S Steering Committee for Bossey (WCC Ecumerical Training Center in Celigny, Switzerland 1955-99. A former resident of Brewster Place Retirement Community, Topeka, she served as an officer on the Resident Council and kept detailed clear records as the historian. Overseas assigments indicate the scope of her expertise: 1) Member Decennial Exchange Delegation between the National Council of the Churches of Christ, USA, and the Churches of the Soviet Union (1984) 2) Member Teaching Delegation to the Reformal Church of Hungary on behalf of the Presbyterian Church USA (1987) 3) Member Ecumenical Deligation to the World Council of Churches (Geneva)to the Vatican (Rome) and the Christian Jewish and Muslim leadership in Jerusalem (1990). Dorothy came from a family with a long tradition of good citizenship. In the 1640's three Ambler brothers moved from Wakefield England and settled in America-one of Virginia and two in Massachusetts. Family men fought in the Colonial Wars and the others since then as well as serving in various professional and business groups in the communities. Over the past decade no one in this country had better exemplified leadership of ecumenism then Dorothy Berry. And family and friends treasure memories of her sense of humor, her careful listening ear in conversations, and her concern for the welfare of all people. We will miss her and remember her with deep respect and with love. She was born Jan. 4, 1911, in Silver Lake, to Charles and Margaret Coughlin Green. She had lived in the Silver Lake community most of her life. Upon graduating from Silver Lake High School in 1928, she entered St. Mary's College in Leavenworth, graduating in 1932. She was appointed postmaster at Silver Lake in 1933 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Parting is such a sweet sorrow. She was married to Marvin A. Berry on April 5, 1940, at Perry. He preceded her in death on June 10, 1974. She also was preceded in death by a son, Marvin A. Barry Jr. and a daughter, Mary Berry. Survivors include two sons, William J. "Bill" Berry, Prairie Village, and John Berry, Bonner Springs; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. | 4022 |  | Obituary- Berry, Leo LEO BERRY Leo Berry 44 passed away at his home Wednesday night, August 3, after a brief illness. His death came as a shock to the community, many persons being unaware of his illness. He was born at Pond Creek, Okla., Aug. 22, 1901. He attended St. Bene¬dicts college at Atchison and completed his college work at St. Marys college at St. Marys, where he lived with his parents until coming to Rossville to take charge of the Berry ele¬vator. In 1927 he was united in marriage to Miss Mildred Binney of Rossville, and to this union two sons were born. Mr. Berry became manager of the Berry Elevator in Rossville in 1926 and has been in business here since that time. He has built up a prosperous business that has done much for this community. In addi¬tion to the local elevator, elevators at Maple Hill, Kiro, Silver Lake and Rock Creek were under the Berry control. Mr. Berry also owned and farmed land of his own. He had served two terms as Mayor of Ross¬ville. Mr. Berry is survived by his wife and two sons, Leo Dale and Robert of the home; his mother, Mrs. Emmett Berry, St. Marys; two brothers, Em¬mett, Jr., of Roseville Calif., and Marvin of Silver Lake; two sisters, Mrs. Alan Pierce of Topeka; and Helen Berry of St. Marys. Funeral services will be held at the Rossville Catholic church, Saturday morning at 9 a. m. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary cemetery at St. Marys, with Verschelden Funeral home in charge. He served in the Air Force Reserves and the Kansas Army National Guard. He was called to active duty in 1968. In 1969, he went to Vietnam and served in the American Division 69th Brigade. He retired as chief warrant officer 4. He had worked for Blue Ribbon Cleaners in St. Marys for several years. He served as chief of police in St. Marys for many years and was a member of the M Squad. He worked for Raine Lumber and Hardware in Maple Hill for many years and later for Wehner Hardware in Rossville until he retired. He was a member of St. Marys United Methodist Church. He was a past member of Pottawatomie Masonic Lodge in St. Marys. He was a member of Aubert-Walls Post No. 7796 at St. Marys and a member of the Retired Army Officers Association. He married Betty J. Beverlin on Sept. 7, 1952, in Topeka. He was preceded in death by a son, Jim Beseau, on Nov. 8, 1996; a great-granddaughter, McKayla; sisters, Twylah Lytle and Betty Raine; and a brother, Henry “Whistle” Beseau. He died Saturday, July 20, at a Wamego hospital. Mr. Beseau was city manager for St. Marys from 1970 until he retired May 31, 1985. He served on the St. Marys City Commission from 1959 to 1968, and was assistant city man¬ager for St. Marys from 1968 to 1970. He also served as St. Marys police chief 1 1/2 years. He operated a dry cleaning busi¬ness at St. Marys from 1953 to 1973, and was vice president of Big Lakes Developmental Center Inc., at Man¬hattan. He was born May 22, 1920, at St. Clere township in eastern Pottawa¬tomie County, the son of Harry Wilfred and Mary Frances Smith Beseau. He spent most of his life in St. Marys. Mr. Beseau served in the Navy as a chief petty officer in the hospital corps during World War II. He was a member of a Navy choir at San Die¬go, Calif. He had been a member of St. Marys Volunteer Fire Department since 1956, was a member and past master of Pottawatomie Lodge No. 52, AF&AM, a member of Artha Chapter No. 238, Order of Eastern Star, and a member of the United Methodist Church, for which he had been chairman of the board of the church council, all at St. Marys. He was also a member of Jimmie Lil- lard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville, and the Kansas Peace Officers Association. He married Mary M. Woody March 16, 1942. She survives. She was graduated from St. Marys High School in 1942. She and her husband owned and operated the Blue Ribbon Dry Cleaners in St. Marys many years. She was a bookkeeper for Miller Department Store in St. Marys for several years, and had been the bookkeeper for the St. Marys United Methodist Church for several years. Mary worked at the “St. Marys Star” in the ’80s as a receptionist. She was a member of the St. Marys United Church, the Ho Menninger Bible Study class, a 50- year member of the Eastern Star, a member of the Hoy-Heim American Legion Auxiliary, the St. Marys Senior Citizens, the B.P.W. and the A.B.W.A. She was married to Henry W. “Whistle” Beseau on March 16, 1942, at Corpus Christi, Tex. He died July 20, 1985. Surviving her are two sons, James Beseau, Chanute, and Wayne Beseau, Topeka; two daughters, Jolyne Wehner, Rossville, and Kathieen Rankin, St. Marys; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She died late Sunday, Oct. 6, at a Wamego nursing home where she had been the past 10 years. She was born Feb. 21, 1891, at Rossville, the daughter of Ben and Eliza George Reser. She moved to Wamego from Rossville in 1937. She was a former member of the United Brethren Church at Delia. She w/as married to Garleton Startup Jan. 31, 1912. He died Oct. 22, 1922. She was married to Albert Besta Feb. 26, 1926, in Topeka. He survives. A daughter, Mrs. Phyllis Mays, died April 16, 1982. Other survivors include a son, Averill Startup, Glenwood Springs, Colo.; (three daughters, Mrs. Marie Brazzle Wamego, and Mrs. Velma Colter land Mrs. Helen Richard, both of Topeka; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Besta worked for International Har-vester in Wamego for many years. He also was a meat cutter for the Nehring Locker Plant in Wamego, and he was a 50-year member of the Wamego Volunteer Fire Department. He was born Sept. 23, 1907, in Delia, the son of Albin and Teresa Baluzka Besta. He was married to Agnes S. Reser on Feb. 26,1926, in Topeka. She died Oct. 6, 1985. He later was married to Mary Kobis- kie in 1985 at Belvue. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Ma¬rie Brazzle, Wamego; a stepson, Averill Startup, Glenwood Springs, Colo.; three stepdaughters, Velma Colter, Topeka, and Sandy Borger and Linda Bellinder, both of Wamego; a sister, Lottie Stum, Rossville; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Besta also was preceded in death by two daughters, Phyllis Mays, in 1982, and Helen Richard, in 1996. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego. Burial will be at the Wamego City Cemetery. Mr. Besta will lie in state after 10 a.m. today at the funeral home. No family visitation is scheduled. Sunday at Parker Mortuary in Topeka for Albin Besta, 81, of Rossville, who died Thursday in a Topeka hospital after a short illness. Burial was in Rossville Cemetery. He was born Feb. 29, 1884 at Rossville and spent most of his life in the Rossville community. He was a farmer and was a drayman 25 years before he retired in 1958. He was married to Teresa Balusek October 12, 1909. She died in February 1960. A son, Ed Besta, died in December 1954. Survivors include two sons, Albert Besta, Wamego, and William Besta, Topeka; a daughter, Mrs. Lottie Stum, Rossville; a sister, Mrs. Delia Simecka, Rossville; two half-sisters, Mrs. Emial Hladky and Julia Lysek, both of Rossville; a half-brother, Valen Lysek, Delia; 13 grandchildren and several greatgrandchildren. Mr. Besta worked tor Santa Fe Railway until 1967, and then he worked for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. until he retired in 1998 as a supervi-sor. He was born Oct. 14, 1936, in Rossville, the son of Edward and Winfield Yocum Besta. He graduated from Delia High School. Mr. Besta was a member of Moose Lodge No. 555 and First Lutheran Church. He also bowled in several bowling leagues and played in a Pitch Card League. He married Nancy L. Parr on Dec. 23, 1958, in Topeka. She survives. | 4039 |  | Obituary- Besta, Leona Leona I. “Cookie” Besta ROSSVILLE-Leona I. “Cookie” Besta, 70, passed away Friday, October 28, 2016 at the Rossville Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Rossville. She was born May 29, 1946 in Topeka, the daughter of James Harold “Vern” and Georgia Mae Shields Spiker. Cookie graduated from Highland Park High School. She graduated from cosmetology school in Topeka and was a beautician for many years. Cookie later worked for the Kansas Department of Revenue until her retirement. Cookie was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, James Curtis “J.C.” Spiker. She was united in marriage to Bennie Besta; they later divorced but remained close friends. Survivors include her son, Richie Besta, Topeka; three daughters, Cindy (Karl) Kelley, Rossville, Patti and Stacy Besta, both of Topeka; four sisters, Carol (Ted) Montgomery, Berryton, Cindy Spiker, Ottawa, Pat Spiker and Misty Snyder, both of Topeka; grandchildren, Haley and Dalton Kelley, Rossville; several nieces and nephews. Cookie was cremated. A memorial visitation will be Friday, November 4, 2016, from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Inurnment will be in the Rossville Cemetery. Mrs. Besta and her husband farmed near Wamego until the 1970s. She later was a baker for Derby Food Center at Kansas State University in Manhattan for several years. She was born May 11, 1915, at Belvue, the daughter of William and Caroline Trieber Grieshaber. She was graduated from Paxico High School. Mrs. Besta was a member of the vermillion FCE in Wamego. She married Fred Kobiskkle in 1936. He died in 1981. She married Albert Besta in 1984 at Wells Creek. He died in 1997. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Bellinder and Sandra Borger, both of Wa¬mego; two brothers, Henry Grieshaber, Bel¬vue, and Carl Grieshaber, St. Marys; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at R.J. Evans Mortuary in Wamego. Burial will be in Wamego City Cemetery. She pased away in the Holton Hospital, Sunday, January 26, 1958. She was married to Hugh Jackson Baker on August 9, 1908. To this union was born three daughters: Mabel Marie, Mildred Pauline and Frances Josephine. After sevral years this marriage was dissolved. She almost single-handed reared her daughters to splendid womanhood. On December 4, 1935, she was married to Clarence O. Betcher. Her entire life was lived among friends in the Mayetta community. She was a member of the Mayetta Methodist Church. Surviving her are her husband, Clarence Betcher of the home; three daughters: Mrs. Mabel Snavely, Silver Lake, Kansas; Mrs. Mildred Robson, Topeka; Mrs. Frances Johnson, Kansas City, Kansas; a stepson, Lloyd Betcher, Topeka, a brother, Jerry Smith, Mayeta, 7 grandchildren and one great grandchild; other relatives and a host of neighbors and friends. Funeral services were held at the home conducted by Eld. Van Vleck, after which the body was laid to rest in the Rossville cemetery. Mr. Betzer was 83 years old. He was the father of 10 children 8 of whom survive him, and were in attendance at the funeral. | 4047 |  | Obituary- Beureau, Sarah Mrs. S.E. Beureau Dead She Was the Mother-in-Law of George C. Montgomery The murderer of George C. Montgomery will have a double crime to answer for, perhaps not to the local authorities, but when his record is shown on the judgment day he will be held responsible for the death of Mrs. S.E. Beureau. Mrs. Beureau was the aged mother of Mrs. Montgomery. She had always lived with her daughter and she loved George Montgomery as her own son. When he was murdered, she broke down completely and had never fully recovered since. Sunday afternoon she was stricken with paralysis which affected her whole right side. Early Monday morning she suffered another stroke of paralysis, affecting her left side, and early in the morning the doctors pronounced her dying. She did not breathe her last until late last night. | 4050 |  | Obituary- Bickford, Clifford Clifford Neal Bickford MAPLE HILL- Clifford Neal Bickford, 79, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2010 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born August 5, 1930 at Waverly, the son of Roy and Nellie Cappen Bickford. He moved west of Holton and graduated from Soldier High School in 1940. Mr. Bickford served in the United States Army. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad before moving to Sterling where he owned and operated SuperBe service station. He later returned to work for the railroad where he worked for many years before his retirement. He moved to the Maple Hill community in the late 90's. Mr. Bickford attended Christ the King Catholic Church in Topeka. On September 18, 1954 he was united in marriage to Pauline Martin in Rossville. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a son, Darwin Bickford, Springfield, MO; three daughters, Kathleen Snyder, Jackson Hole, WY, Christina (Jim) Bello, Chattanooga, TN, and Carla (Joey) Jackson, Hutch¬inson; three brothers. Kenneth and Leo Bickford, Holton and Leland Bickford, Pahrump, NV; two sisters, Betty Mayo, Filer, ID, and Janice Stewart, Topeka; five grandchildren, Jessica Feldt, Jeremy Jackson, Jerrad, Lauren and Connor Bickford. Funeral services for Mr. Bickford will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday, March 15, 2010 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Interment will be in the Rossville Cemetery. Mr. Bickford will lie in state from 3:00 until 7:00 P.M. Sunday, March 14th at the funeral home where family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00.
