He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lois, his sons, Brent and wife Loan, Bryce and wife Tricia, daughter, Emily, four grandsons, Darrin, Nickolas, Braydn and Issak and his younger sister, Charlotte resides in St. Mary’s, Kansas and extended family members. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Mary Decker, sister, Winnie, and brothers, Robert and Willis. Mr. Decker was born and raised in Rossville, Kansas and later became a lifelong resident of Topeka, Kansas. In his early years, Mr. Decker worked at his parents’ farm. After high school, he served in the Navy and later in the Marines during the Korean War. He worked at Goodyear for 38 years before retiring. Mr. Decker was an active member of the Elmont United Methodist Church, Shriners, The Marine Corp League and the local Lincoln Club. His hobbies included antique cars, antique toys, working in the yard and taking care of his beloved pets. He was a good father and husband and was always there to help anyone in need. Funeral services for Arthur will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Elmont United Methodist Church, 6635 NW Church Lane, where his family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time. He was born Dec. 22, 1902, near Denison, to Thompson Ithimer and Mary Isabelle Akright Deck¬er, and attended Denison School. He had lived in the Rossville community since the spring of 1922. He worked for Standard Oil and later owned and oper¬ated a trucking company. He farmed for many years. He was a member of Rossville Christian Church for 65 years. He was a member of Lake Lodge No. 50, AF&AM, and Loyal Chapter No. 176 of Order of Eastern Star, both in Silver Lake. He married Mary Orrick on Jan. 29, 1922, in Topeka. She died Feb. 27, 1989. A son, Robert Decker, died in 1972. A grandson, Rodney Steele, died July 24, 1991. A granddaughter, Marilyn Schmitz, died Nov. 27, 1994. A great-granddaughter, Lisa Jones, died Nov. 11, 1994. Survivors include two sons, Willis Decker, Ross¬ville, and Arthur Decker, Topeka; two daughters, Winifred Stach, Rossville, and Charlotte Kling, St. Marys; 12 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. He was born December 22, 1902, in rural Denison, the son of Thompson Ithimer and Mary Isa¬belle Akright Decker. He grew up in the Denison community and attended Denison School. He moved to Rossville in the spring of 1922, and worked for Standard Oil. He later owned and operated a trucking company. Mr. Decker was a farmer most of his life. He was a 65-year member of the Rossville Christian Church, Lake Lodge AF&AM Silver Lake, and Loyal Chapter No. 176 of the Order of the Eastern Star at Silver Lake. On January 29, 1922, he mar¬ried Mary Orrick in Topeka. She died February 27, 1989. A son, Robert Decker died in 1972. A grandson, Rodney Steele, died July 24, 1991. A granddaughter, Mari¬lyn Schmitz, died November 27, 1994. A great-granddaughter, Lisa Jones, died November 11, 1994. She was born July 25, 1899, at Delia and lived in the Soldier and Havensville communities for many years before moving to Holton 25 years ago. She was a school teacher for six years. She was a member of Holton First United Methodist Church and a former member of Havensville Order of the Eastern Star. She was married to William T. Jen¬kins on June 6, 1923 He died July 7, 1942. She was married to Albert Becker on Aug. 24, 1951. He survives at the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Rice, 3109 W. 8th, Tope¬ka; two sons, Lyle M. Jenkins, Houston, and Donald Jenkins, Route 3, Holton; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Bonnie Williams, Route 2, Alma; a stepson, Marvin L. She was married to Ernest Decker Jan. 28, 1922, in Topeka. He sur¬vives. A son, Robert Decker, died in September 1973. He established the company in 1928. He was born Aug. 21, 1905, in Deni¬son, the son of Thompson and Isa¬belle Akwright Decker. Mr. Decker was instrumental in es¬tablishing the Topeka Oilmen's Club. He was married to Reba A. Oden June 10, 1928, in Topeka. She died Oct. 27, 1956. He was married to Louis Maxine Berry June 8, 1957 in Alma. She died in June, 1976. Survivors include a son, Frank Decker, Topeka; a daughter, Doris Welch, Silver Lake; a stepson, Don¬ald Berry, Tecumseh; a stepdaughter, Barbara Rainey, Muncie, Ind.; a brother, Ernest Decker, Rossville; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Decker, 76, Rossville, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. Willis was born May 3, 1927, at Rossville, the son of Ernest and Mary Orrick Decker. He graduated from Rossville High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army. He owned and operated Decker Asphalt Co. in Kansas City. He lived in Kansas City until his retirement in 1990, when he moved back to Rossville. Willis was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church in Silver Lake. He married Helen Immenschuh in October 1945. She survives at the home. Other survivors are three daughters, Sharon and her husband, Don Will, Paola, Wanda and her husband, Rick Jones, Cape Coral, Fla., and Glenda and her husband, Joe Ammon, Bradenton, Fla.; three grandchildren, Tonya Smith, Laura Bruchman and William Franklin; two sisters, Winifred Stach, Rossville, and Charlotte Kling, St. Marys; a brother, Gerald Decker, Topeka; and a brother-in-law, Marvin Immenschuh, Delia. Mr. Decker was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Decker; and a granddaughter, Lisa Jones. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Lakeside Baptist Church in Silver Lake. She was born Sept. 10, 1921, at Paxico, the daughter of Michael and Mary Meinhardt Zeller. She grew up in the Newbury community and graduated from Paxico High School. Mrs. DeDonder was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. She was a 4-H Leader and enjoying quilting, needle¬work, flower gardening, her grand-children and great grandchildren. She had lived in the Sandy Hook community all of her married life un¬til moving into St. Marys a few years ago. On June 16, 1942, she was united in marriage to Philip DeDonder at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newbury. He died Jan. 10, 1992. She was also preceded in death by a son Christopher DeDonder in 1963 and siblings Sr. Maxine Zeller, OSB, Thelma Caponegro, Mildred Degenhardt and Florian Zeller. She was born in Corning, the daughter of Gilbert J. and Rosalia E. Broxterman Scott on November 12, 1946. Marsha graduated from Rossville High School. Marsha worked in health care for many years. She later became a para-professional at St. Marys Grade School, where she retired after many years of service. She chose this profession to watch her grandchildren as they passed through each class at SMGS. Marsha was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Marsha D. Scott and Francis M. "Frank" DeDonder were united in marriage on November 27, 1965, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Topeka. He preceded her in death on August 25, 2016. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Randy Scott, and sister, Michelle Cowger. Survivors include her children, Jim DeDonder, St. Marys, Tammy (Tim) Fulmer, Flagler, CO., Lori (Tom) Hutley and Sarah (Marc) Carlson, all of St. Marys; three brothers, Keith (Cindi) Scott, Phoenix, AZ; Glen (Holly) Scott, Tampa, FL; and Ralph (Lauri) Scott, Shawnee; her sister, Sheryl (Dick) Bahr, Rossville; a sister-in-law, Pam Scott, Phoenix, AZ; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren with one on the way. He was born July 4, 1951, at Wamego, the son of Philip V. and Louise C. Zeller DeDonder. Bob attended Immaculate Con¬ception Catholic Grade School and graduated from St. Marys High School in 1969. He attended Man-hattan Vo-Tech School and received a certificate in drafting. He served in the United States Air Force and had been stationed at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka. Mr. DeDonder was a farmer and stockman. He was a member of Im¬maculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Coun¬cil No. 657 and a fourth degree mem¬ber of Thomas McNeive Assembly No 289, all in St. Marys. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Christopher. On Aug. 23, 1975, he was united in marriage to Rebecca A. “Becky” Harries at Immaculate Conception Church in St. Marys. She survives of the home. | 5063 |  | Obituary- DeDonder, Susan 1 Mrs. Susan M. DeDonder ROSSVILLE — Mrs. Susan Marie DeDonder, 27, Rossville, was found dead Wednesday, May 28, in an outbuilding on her farmstead near here. The Shawnee County sheriff’s department said Mrs. DeDonder died of a gunshot wound to the head and that the death remained under investigation. She was last seen alive at 9 p.m. Tuesday when she was with a friend, a detective said. Mrs. DeDonder had worked at Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Kansas in Topeka for 10 years. She was born Sept. 21, 1958, at Rossville, the daughter of Edward and Mary Hobart Macha. She spent her life in the Rossville and St. Marys areas. Mrs. DeDonder was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. She was married to Andrew DeDonder Sept. 29, 1979. He survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Jordan DeDonder, at home; a son, Joshua DeDonder, at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Macha, Delia; a sister, Mrs. Sandra Hoferer, St. Marys; and five brothers, Wayne Macha, Ramona, Calif., Donald Macha, Rossville, Kenneth Macha, Topeka, William Macha, Santee, Calif., and Charles Macha, Carlsbad, Calif. | 5064 |  | Obituary- DeDonder, Susan 2 Shooting death focus of inquiry Detectives from the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Department continued late Wednesday afternoon to investigate the shooting death of a woman, whose body was found early Wednesday in an outbuilding near her farmhouse about three miles northwest of Rossville. Capt. Ken Pierce, head of county detectives, identified the dead woman as Susan M. DeDonder, 27. Investigators said they were trying to determine whether the woman’s death was a suicide or a homicide. Sheriff’s detectives were called to the DeDonder home after DeDonder’s husband found her body about 7 a.m. Wednesday. The DeDonder home is on Anthony Road three-tenths of a mile south of US-24 in west Shawnee County. When found, the body was lying in a swing inside a metal outbuilding about 100 feet south of the DeDonder home, Pierce said. The swing was on the floor of the outbuilding. County Detective Richard Mergen said the cause of death was a gun¬shot wound to the right side of the head above the ear. A semi-automatic pistol used in the shooting was found near where the woman’s body originally was located before emergency personnel moved her outside the outbuilding Wednesday morning during an attempt to administer aid to her. Mergen said detectives were attempting to determine whether the woman’s death was a homicide or a suicide. “It’s just' not that clear at this point,” Mergen said. Detective Sgt. Mark Wanamaker said, “We are still investigating. We’ve got a few more facts to run down before we can say. It’s an up-in-the-air deal right now." Mergen said more friends and relatives of the dead woman need to be interviewed in connection with the case. Mergen said DeDonder was last seen alive at 9 p.m. Tuesday when she was with a friend. | |
| 5065 |  | Obituary- DeDonder, Susan 3 Shooting death ruled suicide The May 28 shooting death of a rural Shawnee County woman has been ruled a suicide, said a Shawnee County Sheriff’s Department investigator Tuesday. The body of Susan M. DeDonder, 27, was found by her husband about 7 a.m. inside an outbuilding at their home on Anthony Road three-tenths of a mile south of US-24 in western Shawnee County. Detective Richard Mergen said he and detective Rick Hladky had concluded interviews with DeDonder’s relatives and acquaintances and had reviewed the physical evidence before closing the case Tuesday. Mergen said their finding was that DeDonder died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the right side of her head above the ear. Mergen said the department's ruling is consistent with the coroner’s report of the woman’s death. | |

Mr. and Mrs. James Conley, Miss Fern Pendleton, Mrs. Howard Stiles and Clyde Rogers drove to Holton Sunday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Helen Humphrey Deeter who passed away Wednesday of the last week at St. Francis hospital. She was born May 7, 1946, north of Topeka in Shawnee County the daughter of Otis and Grace (Bixby) Busey. Gracie lived in Topeka most of her life. She worked at the Kansas State Department of Motor Vehicles, Brewster Place and Revco Drug before retiring due to health reasons. Gracie was the foundation of her family, keeping things running as smoothly as possible, regardless of what life threw her way. While growing up she attended St. Joseph Catholic Church. As an adult she was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a member of the Citizen Band Potawatomi Nation and the Eagles Aerie #4319. Gracie married Michael Degand, Jr. on October 2,1964 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. They shared more than 45 years of married life together before Gracie’s passing. Survivors include, her husband Mike Degand, Jr. of Rossville; children, Michael J. Degand III of Topeka, Michelle Degand-Lopez and husband Dean of Topeka and Ali Degand of Rossville; brother, A1 Busey and wife Cheryl of Topeka; 3 grand¬children, 3 step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 10, 2009. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the church. The family will receive friends following the rosary until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart. He was a retired sheet metal worker for the Santa Fe Railway. He was born July 17, 1890 at Rossville and moved to Topeka in 1945. Mr. DeGraff was married to Alice Stum in May of 1911, at Rossville. She survives. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was born June 12, 1920, in Rossville, to Joseph A. and Dora B. Riggs DeGraff. He was a truck driver 25 years. He was supervisor of housekeeping at Topeka State Hospital before he retired in 1982. He lived in Topeka many years before he moved to Lebo in 1991. He served in the Army from 1940 to 1945 including three years in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a member of Lebo Post No. 323 of the American Legion. He was married to Verleen E. Richards July 20, 1978, in Topeka. She survives. | 5077 |  | Obituary- DeGraff, Frances Rossville's Oldest Lady Died Sunday Mrs. Frances DeGraff, widow of the late John DeGraff, died at 1:10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at the advanced age of 89 years and 13 days, after an illness of about three days. Her death was caused by bronchial pneumonia which developed following a severe cold. Mrs. DeGraff, with her husband and family was one of the pioneer settlers of Rossville township, coming here in 1866. She was one of the allottees of the lands given to the Pottawatomie Indians in Rossville township, which at that time was in the Pottawatomie reservation before it was diminished to the present boundary. And at the time of her death she was still in possession of her land, the only allottee remaining from the original reservation. Mrs. DeGraff was born near South Bend, Ind., the daughter of Pater F. Navarre. During her residence of 55 years in Rossville township she had gone thru all the hardships of the first settlers and raised a large family. She is survived by six children, four sons -- Isadore, of Shawnee, Okla., George, of Holton, Kans., Joseph and William of Rossville; and two daughters, Mrs. Ben Mileham, of Topeka and Miss Frances of the home address. Funeral services were held Tues. morning, Sept. 20, at 9:30 in the Catholic church at St. Marys and internment made in the St. Marys cemetery. | |
| 5078 |  | Obituary- DeGraff, Frederick ELECTROCUTED BY LIVE WIRE (From Shawnee, Okla., Daily News) Frederick F. (Ted) DeGraff, 29, line gang foreman of the Oklahoma Gas and Electric company, was killed yesterday morning (Thursday, Oct. 17) when he came in contact with a 2300 volt wire while working on a transformer back of the substation on South Bell Street. According to reports, DeGraff was working on a transformer about 10 feet high. For some reason, he lifted his arm which came in contact with the live wire, knocking him from the transformer, it was said. He fell head first to the ground. DeGraff was pronounced dead by physicians, who examined him immediately following the accident although artificial respiration and lung motors were applied for three hours. Severe bruises on his shoulders and back led physicians to believe that his neck may bee been broken. R.C. Kumkler, manager of the Oklahoma Gas and Electric company, was conducting an investigation of the accident yesterday. AA detailed report will be filed by Kumler today, he said. DeGraff lived in Shawnee most of his life. He served 13 years as an employee of the Oklahoma Gas and Electric company. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Evelyn Esther DeGraff, Two children, Gloria Catherine, 5, and David Richard, 2; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isadore J. DeGraff, 127 North Tucker St., three brothers, Romie, Isadore and Edwin, all of Shawnee; three sisters, Mrs. H.P. Roentgen of Los Angeles, Calif; Mrs. J.W. Horbash of Shawnee, Mrs. C.W. Laub of Okmulgee. The funeral service was held Sunday. George Degraff, of this city, an uncle, went down Saturday to attend the funeral. | 5079 |  | Obituary- DeGraff, George 1 George DeGraff George DeGraff died about 3:10 Wednesday morning at his home on Green St. wet of the Creek. His sister, Miss Frances DeGraff, was with him when he died. Mr. DeGraff has been in poor physical condition for over a year but able to be about. He was in Topeka Saturday and probably became ill Sunday. He lived alone and was frequently absent for a few days at a time so no concern was felt by his relatives until about the time word come of his serious condition. Tuesday he managed to get an outside door open and attracted the attention of F.E. Diehl, high neighbor, and the latter summoned Miss DeGraff and Dr. Miller. He was beyond medical aid and passed away a few hours later. George would have been 71 years old May 17 of this year. He came to Kansas from his birthplace at South Bend, Ind., with his parents when a child, 5 months old. He spent his early manhood here and conducted a barber shop. After selling to B.D. Dennis he moved to Holton and owned a shop for many years. He married Miss Kate Bennett of Holton, and she and her parents conducted a hotel for years, known as the Bennett House. Two children were born to Mrs. and Mrs. DeGraff, a son, now deceased, and a daughter, Margaret Smits, of Berkeley, Calif. His divorced wife is also located in California. About ten years ago George returned to Rossville to spend his last days, occasionally working at his trade. Other surviving relatives are a sister, Miss Frances DeGraff, and two brothers. Joseph and William DeGraff, all of Rossville. Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday) at 2 o'clock at the Verschelden funeral home in St. Marys, and the body interred in the St. Marys cemetery. Ms. DeHart had been a private detective and a prison guard in Lansing and at the Topeka Correctional Facility, and she was a supervisor for Barton Security in Olathe. She was trained as a nail technician at the American Academy of Hair Design, where she graduated valedictorian of her class. She was born April 27, 1954, the daughter of Bruce A. and Lorraine Heim Bleeck Sr. She graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1972. Survivors include a son, Dallas DeHart, Norfolk, Va.; her parents, Bruce and Lorraine Bleeck Sr., Topeka; two brothers, Bruce Bleeck Jr. and Michael Bleeck Sr., both of Topeka; a sister, Laurette McAtee; and a granddaughter. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. She was born June 19, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Dan and Marie Ross. She spent her early life at LaCygne where she attended public schools. She was graduated from Kansas State University. Mrs. DeHoff was a music teacher in the Wamego school system and gave private lessons in Rossville. She had lived in Louisburg the past 10 years. Mrs. DeHoff organized Chapter HX of PEO Sisterhood in Rossville and was the president of Chapter CV in Louisburg. She was a member of the Rossville United Methodist Church and choir director of the Louisburg United Methodist Church, where she assisted in supervising youth groups. She was married to Dr. Fred DeHoff, a Louisburg veterinarian. He survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Brandy DeHoff and Kristin DeHoff, both at home; her mother, Mrs. Marie Ross, LaCygne; and a sister, Mrs. Susan Pease, LaCygne. She was born Feb. 14, 1928, at her parents’ home in Westport Township near Berryton, the daughter of William and Faye McCormick Ulrey. She was graduated in 1946 from Berryton High School. She lived in the Maple Hill community most of her life and in Maple Hill the past six years. Mrs. Deiter was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville, Ladies Auxiliary to Philip Billard Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1650 and Wheathearts Square Dance club, both in Topeka, and James Elmer Romick Unit No. 130 of the American Legion Auxiliary, Maple Hill Research Club and an Extension Homemakers Unit, all at Maple Hill. She was married to Harold M. Deiter on Sept, 29, 1947, in the Catholic Church of the Assumption at Topeka. He died May 26, 1978. Survivors include a daughter, Debra L. Howerton, Rossville; a son, Harold M. Deiter Jr., Rossville; a grandchild; and two stepgrandchildren. Jean was a longtime resident of Silver Lake. Her life was led with love and kindness through the grace of Christ. Jean was born Feb. 6, 1933, in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of Carl C. and Pauline B. Mitchell Honeycutt. Carl and Pauline moved Jean to Topeka in 1945 where she graduated at Topeka High School in 1950. She married Robert T. (Bob) Deiter of Maple Hill in 1956 and together they raised a blessing of three children from their previous marriages and four more from their own union. They moved to the com¬munity of Silver Lake in 1958. Jean was an active member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville for 47 years and Mother Teresa Catholic Church since 2005. She served in many capacities for both churches through the years. She owned and operated the family farm with Bob from 1958 until his death in 1986. They owned and operated Deiter Christmas Tree Farms beginning in 1981; Jean continued until 2006. She worked part-time for the department of agriculture FSA from 1982 to 2000. Jean served eight years on Silver Lake School Board District 372. She served on Silver Lake’s City Council for 15 years and was a member of Silver Lake Senior Citizens. She was born June 3, 1939, Wagner, OK, the daughter of William “Tooter” and Ruby L. Krohn Nichols. Mary graduated from Tulsa High School. She moved to Kansas in the early 70’s. Mary worked in retail sales. She worked in food services at USD No. 321 and later worked for Famous Brand Retail Liquor. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Meredith “Buddy” Nichols, and a sister, Norma Wagner. Mary was united in marriage to Richard J. Deiter II on September 18, 1981, in Topeka. He survives. Other survivors include her children; Kirk (Amanda) Henderson, Tonkawa, OK, Milea Ryan, Salina, Michael (Carolyn) Delaney, Gardner, Amy Raelyne (Brett) Sutton, Topeka, and Richard J. (Julie) Deiter III, Topeka; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. Graveside services will be at 3:00 P.M. | 5100 |  | Obituary- Deiter, Melvin 1 Melvin P. Deiter Melvin P. Deiter, 87, formerly of Maple Hill, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. He was born Aug. 4, 1924, at Paxico, the son of Francis P. and Verna M. Stone Deiter. He was raised in the Maple Hill community and gradu¬ated from Maple Hill High School in 1942. Melvin served as a corpsman in the 2nd Marine Division fighting in the Battle of Saipan. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After Melvin was discharged from the service, he moved back to the Maple Hill community and worked for Morell’s Meat Packing. He later worked at the VA Hospital in Topeka until he retired. Mr. Deiter was a farmer and rancher for many years. He also drove a school bus for Mill Creek Valley USD 329, Alma. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Melvin also was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Deiter was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Joseph G., Robert and Harold Deiter, Dorothy Watt and Shirley Meier. On Feb. 10, 1947, he was united in marriage to Charlotte Simons in Topeka. She survives at the home. Other survivors include two sons, Larry Deiter and wife Michelle of Meriden, and Dennis Deiter and wife Anna of Raymore, Mo.; his daughter, Linda Harrison and husband Don of Keller, Texas; two brothers, Howard Deiter of Maple Hill and William Deiter of Topeka; a sister, Maxine Bronaugh; eight grandchildren; and 16 great¬grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 2 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Interment followed in the Maple Hill Cemetery.
