She was born Nov. 10, 1939, at Silver Lake, the daughter of LeRoy J. and Josephine Olejnik Pressgrove. Karen graduated from Rossville High School. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Topeka, and a 50-year member of the ZCBJ Lodge, Rossville. She was preceded in death by her father, LeRoy Pressgrove. On Nov. 29, 1958, she was united in marriage to Myron Figge at Wheaton. He survives of the home. Other survivors include her mother, Josephine Pressgrove, Rossville; sons, Rodney (Diane) Figge, Peyton, Colo., Roy Figge, Colorado Springs, Colo., Robbie (Debbie) Figge, and Rex (Sherry) Figge all of Wamego; a sister, Shirley Rosser, Duncan, Okla.; a brother, Ronald Pressgrove, Topeka; eight grandchildren: Copper, Autumn, Austin, Jesse, Shianne, Wyatt, Anna and Colby. A prayer service was held Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Faith Lutheran Church, Topeka. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Wamego Cemetery, Wamego. | 5553 |  | Obituary- Figge, Lorna Lorna I. Figge WESTMORELAND — Lorna I. Figge, 86, Westmoreland, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 1996, at a Westmoreland nursing home. She was born Dec. 27, 1909, at Duluth, one of 15 children born to Herman and Mathilde Brunkow Teske. She attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School at Duluth and was a lifelong resident of the Duluth and Wheaton areas. Mrs. Figge was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church at Wheaton and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She married Fred Figge Jr. on Jan. 24, 1934, at Duluth. He survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Judy Outright, Rossville; four sons, Fred Figge, Dallas, Myron Figge, Topeka, Dale Figge, Westmoreland, and Lyle Figge, Wamego; a sister, Clara Stiff, Sabestian, Fla.; a brother, Ralph Teske, Onaga; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Figge was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Ann Figge. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church at Wheaton. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Mrs. Figge will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Kufahl Funeral Home at Wheaton and later at the church where a prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. today. | 5554 |  | Obituary- Figge, Myron Myron D. Figge, 81, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Via Christi Village in Manhattan. He was born May 5, 1936 near Wheaton, the son of Fred William Figge Jr. and Lorna Teske Figge. He was raised in the Wheaton community and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1954. Myron entered the US Army on June 7, 1956 and served his country until October 8, 1962 Myron worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Topeka for nearly 40 years. He had lived in Topeka, St. Marys and Wamego. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Wamego. He had been a member of NRA and North America Elk Foundation. Myron was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and doing woodworking. On November 29, 1958 he was united in marriage to Karen G. Pressgrove at Wheaton. She preceded him in death on November 24, 2012. He was also preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Shirley, Fred (Cookie) Figge and Lyle Figge. Survivors include his sons, Rodney (Diane) Figge, Peyton CO., Roy Figge, Colorado Springs, CO., Robbie (Debbie) Figge and Rex (Sherry) Figge all of Wamego; a brother, Dale Figge, Westmoreland; a sister Judy Cutright, Topeka; 8 grandchildren and one great-grand-daughter. Fisa (Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin), who passed away on February 3, 2022 at the age of 74. Sandra was raised on her parents farm west of Rossville and attended Rossville schools graduating from Rossville High. She was predeceased by : her father Harley Heiland; and her nephew Kevin Heiland. She is survived by : her mother Dolly Heiland (Degraff); her husband Jerry Fisa; her children, Dolly Dekat, Lonnie Dekat (Brandi), Joni Pflager (Mark), Roy Jepson and Larry Jepson (Jennifer Hilton); her grandchildren, Jamie (Jamie Marie), Shawn (Andrea), Benjamin, Jessica, Austin (Shelby), Ashlee (Jeremy), Alex (Kayla), Mallory, Andrew, Abbigail, Brenden and Bentley; her great grandchildren, Jameson, Silas, Caleb, Elena, Gemma, Jaxson, Dominic, Braxten and Raleigh; her brother Kenneth Heiland (Mary Ann); and her nephews, Jamie Heiland and Brian Heiland. | 5558 |  | Obituary- Fish, John An Old Belvue Citizen Gone Several Rossville people went to Belvue, Monday to pay their last respects to John H. Fish, Sr. who died suddenly in the office of Painless Romine, the dentist in Topeka, last Saturday at the age of 76 years. Death was due to a break in the right ventricle of the heart. The funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church at Belvue at 2-30 p. m. Monday. Rev. Gregg, a personal friend, officiating. The remains were interred in the Belvue cemetery beside his wife who, less than a year ago had preceeded him. The burial ceremony was performed by members of the G. A.R. of which he belonged having served his country from the beginning to the end of the Civil war, under U. S. Grant and Sherman. He is survived by three sons and three daughters, two of whom, J. H. Fish Jr. and Mrs. James Marney reside in Rossville. | |
| 5559 |  | Obituary- Fish, Lyman LYMAN FISH Word was received Monday by relatives, Mrs. Walter Patton, Howard Marney and Glenn Marney, of the death of their uncle Lyman Fish of Belvue. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. Old timers here will remember him as he made his home in Rossville from 1897 until 1903 with his sister Mrs. James Marney and her family. He worked with Mr. Marney in the plastering and cement work, while here. Mr. Fish was buried in the Belvue cemetery, Feb. 21. Fisher, 85, Silver Lake, died Wednesday, December 2, 1987, at a Topeka hospital where he was a patient two months following a heart attack at his home. Mr. Fisher was a retired banker. He began his banking career with the Bank of Topeka where he served three years. He joined the former Kaw Valley National Bank of North Topeka and later was an officer and assistant cashier of Kaw Valley State Bank. He spent a total of 25 years at Kaw Valley. He also served as cashier, loan officer and vice-president of Silver Lake State Bank 25 years before he retired. After retirement, he was auditor and director of Peoples State Bank at Rossville. Mr. Fisher was born March 4, 1902, at Wilson, the son of Joseph and Marie Emilie Opocensky Fisher. He lived in Wilson, Conway Springs and Topeka before he moved to Silver Lake. Mr. Fisher was a member of Central United Presbyterian Church in Topeka, served on the Session, and was youth coordinator many years at the church. He also was a former member of a Masonic lodge and was a charter member of the Silver Lake Lions Club. He was married to Lillian Mae Salyer June 25, 1923, in north Topeka. She survives. A son, Dillon Eugene Fisher, died in 1981. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Doris Mae Chitwood, Silver Lake; a son, William Robert Fisher, Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Oiive Fisher, Denver, Colo., and Judith Ann Fisher, Topeka; a borther [sic], Robert William Fisher, Chanute; eight grand¬children; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. She died Saturday, July 30, at a Lawrence hospital. She was born Nov. 11, 1900, at Maysville, Ky., the daughter of Isaac and Mattie Ellen McDaniel Wyatt. She moved to Kansas in 1903. She moved to Lawrence in 1967 from Topeka, where she had been cook for the First United Methodist Church. Mrs. Fisher was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Harris. She was married to George Edwin Fisher March 1, 1921, at Garnett. He died Oct. 16, 1953. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Retter, Lawrence, a brother, Kiah Wyatt, Topeka; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Fisher worked for Bell Telephone and then helped start the Kansas Parole Board. She retired from the Kansas Department of Corrections in 1965. She was born May 9, 1900, in Rossville, the daughter of Thaddeus James and Rosetta Isabel Page Myers. She was graduated from Rossville High School and Clark's Business College of Topeka: She had lived in Topeka about 80 years. Mrs. Fisher was a member of First Baptist Church, Ladies of the Arab Temple Shrine and the auxiliaries to Capitol Post1 No. 1 of the American Legion and Elk's Lodge No. 204. She was a life member of Loyal Chapter No. 176 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Silver Lake. She married Charles H. French on Oct. 6, 1923, in Silver Lake. He died March 31, 1956. She married Clyde A. Fisher on Sept. 3, 1957, in Topeka. He died Feb. 14, 1964. Survivors include a stepson, Robert E. Fisher, Little Rock, Ark.; a brother, Dr. Clark E. Myers, Atlanta; several step-grandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Silver Lake Cemetery. | 5564 |  | Obituary- Fitzgerald, Angela Angela Fitzgerald Angela E. Fitzgerald Angela Elizabeth Fitzgerald, 82, Topeka, passed away Monday, December 12, 2016 at the House at Midland Care. Angela was born August 19, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Frank and Helen Dugan Maniscalco. Her mother died when Angela was only five and her step-mother Frances reared her. Angela came to Kansas to attend nursing school at Fort Scott. She then moved to Hutchinson where she met her future husband, John Jack Fitzgerald. They married on December 28, 1957, in Holy Cross Church in Hutchinson. The family moved to Topeka in 1966. After 51 year of marriage, Jack passed away November 24, 2009. Angela devoted her life to the care of others, nursing first at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Hutchinson, and then St. Francis Hospital and the Santa Fe Hospital in Topeka, retiring in 1998 after more than 40 years of service. She liked to knit and crochet, making many items for the needy in our community. She loved to shop especially with her grandchildren who were the light of her life. She knew what was special and important to each of them. Angela was a member of Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Church. She loved her Catholic faith and was always true to it. She also remained true to her Brooklyn Dodgers. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Patricia Fitzgerald, John Fitzgerald (Jeanne), Michael Fitzgerald (Sherry), James Fitzgerald; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, her siblings, Margaret, Ann and Msgr. Francis Maniscalco; and brother-in-law, Edward Fitzgerald (Patricia). She was also preceded in death by her parents and step-mother. Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Mother Teresa of Calcutta Church, 2014 NW 46th Street, Topeka KS 66618, where a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at the Church. | 5565 |  | Obituary- Fitzgerald, Leslie Leslie Theodore "Ted" Fitzgerald Leslie Theodore "Ted" Fitzgerald, 87, of Topeka KS died Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at Stormont Vail Hospital due to complications from pneumonia. He was born May 23, 1926, at the Fitzgerald Farm near Valencia, KS. Ted was the seventh of nine children born to Leslie Taylor Fitzgerald and Lydia Bertha (Kresie) Fitzgerald. He attended West Union Grade School, helped work the farm while his five remaining brothers were at war, graduating from Rossville High School in 1946. He enlisted in the US Navy for 4 years on July 31, 1946, serving on the USS Atlanta as FC3 and on the USS Kankakee. He re-enlisted in 1950 serving on the USS Iowa during the Korean War, earning the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Ribbon with 1 battle star. He was honorably discharged on May 18, 1954. Ted was one of six sons to serve in WW II and the Korean War. He was a proud member of the VFW, American Legion, Moose Lodge, and Flint Hills Hunting and Fishing Club serving as Treasurer for many years. He married Rita Jean Smail in 1955 and they had four sons. They divorced in 1980.Ted learned the printer's trade from Mr. Smail and he worked for the State of Kansas Printing Plant from 1969 to 1988 when he retired. Ted enjoyed working on his farm near Valencia and restoring historical items. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Robert, John, Clair, Taylor, and Calvin, and two sons Scott and Gary. Survivors include sons, David and his wife Debbie, John and his wife Angel of Topeka; brother, James and his wife Carolyn of Topeka; two sisters, Eleanor Vance of Woodland, CA and Betty Petersen of Concordia, MO; five grandchildren, Stefani Moore, Robyn, Carly, Johnny and Jessica Fitzgerald of Topeka. Services will be held Monday, August 26, 2013, at 2 pm at Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel followed by a wake at Skinny's Sports Pub in Gage Center. Mr. Fitzgerald worked for Goodyear for 32 years. He was an Air Force veteran and spent 18 months in Japan during the Korean War. He was born Jan. 4, 1930, [in/at] Mayetta, the son of James and Edna Oelke Fitzgerald. He was graduated from Mayetta High School in 1949 and had lived in Mayetta most his life. Mr. Fitzgerald was a past member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, in Mayetta. He was a member of United Rubber Workers Union Local No. 307 in Topeka. He was married to Alma Ray on April 4, 1951, in Dallas. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Rich Fitzgerald, Topeka; a daughter, Linda F. Simoneau, Topeka; a sister, Bernice Hayes, Topeka; and a brother, James E. Fitzgerald, Topeka. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. He was born Aug. 14, 1968, at Wamego, the son of James Joseph and Amelia Bond Flanagan. Bobby graduated from St. Marys High School in 1986. He had worked for the Rezac Sale Barn in St. Marys since he was 16 years old. Bobby was a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Emmett and later Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. He was an avid hunter. He dearly loved his nieces and nephews, Brandi Jo Jensen, Robbie Joe and Dylan Flerlage and Darrin, Kayce and Mitchel “M.J.” Flanagan. | 5570 |  | Obituary- Flanary, Harold HAROLD M. “IRISH” FLANARY Harold M. “Irish” Flanary, 87, St. Marys, died late Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at his home. He was born Sept. 14, 1919, near Soldier, the son of Barney M. and Elva M. Perry Flanary. As a child he lived in Emmett, Delia and St. Clair. He attended Little Cross Creek and Long Branch Schools. He and his family moved to the Maple Hill community in 1928 and he attended school in and near Maple Hill. In 1937 he graduated from Maple Hill High School. After school he farmed and served in the United States Air Corps during World War II from 1942 until 1946. Mr. Flanary was employed 31 years at KFU Hybrids and the Farmers Union Co-op in St. Marys, retiring in 1981. He later worked several years for the City of St. Marys. He was a member of the American Legion at Maple Hill and a Charter Member of the VFW in St. Marys. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Barney Flanary and two sisters, Irene Ames and Marie Sack. On May 10, 1947, he was united in marriage to Maxine Rezac in Topeka. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a son Richard and his wife Claudeane Flanary, St. Marys; a daughter, Janice Flanary, Manhattan; two sisters, Frieda Kimble, Maple Hill and Lois Clark, Topeka and a grandson Harold Lee Flanary, St. Marys. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 10 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. Flannigan passed away June 30, 2020, in Manhattan, Kansas He was born March 7, 1947, in Wamego, Kansas, the son of Thomas W. Flannigan Sr. and Lois Dempsey Flannigan. He grew up in the St. Marys community and attended schools there. He was active in the local Boy Scout Troop attaining the Eagle rank. He attended Kansas State University and received a degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1969. Mike worked as an engineer for the Department of Defense at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, in California, where he worked on nuclear ships and submarines, and then for the Department of Energy at Argonne National Laboratory, in Illinois, where he oversaw the development of nuclear energy and safety. He retired in 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Thomas W. (Marilyn) Flannigan Jr. Survivors include two brothers: William J. (Wilma) Flannigan, St. Marys, Ks. and Richard D. (Susan)Flannigan Dover, Ks. Mike was loved and admired by his niece and nephews: Matthew J. (Michelle) Flannigan, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Thomas J. Flannigan, Burlington, Ks., Brady M. (Kim) Flannigan, Shawnee, Ks, James C. (Lauren) Flannigan, Oklahoma City, Ok., Dempsey J. Flannigan, Roeland Park, Ks., and Jennifer C. He was born April 22, 1939 in St. Louis, MO. to Joseph Flerlage, Sr. and Margaret Morgan. His family moved to St. Marys from Florrisant, when Joe was six years old. He attended Immaculate Conception Church and Elementary school. He graduated from St. Marys High School in 1958. He married Sally Sheppeard in 1959, they later divorced. This union was blessed with five sons: Joe, Dan, Matt, Dave and Mike. Joe served in the Kansas Army National Guard from 1957-1963. One of Joe’s greatest joys was his family. In 1990 he was married to Linda Reuscher. She survives of the home. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bob Flerlage. Naomi married Milton Jennings on January 11, 1945; they later divorced. She married Stanley D. Flett on September 8, 1972 in Belleville, KS; he preceded her in death on July 12, 2003. | 5590 |  | Obituary- Floersch, Mathias H. Mathias H. “Matt” Floersch, age 97, of Highland, Kansas, formerly of Ottawa, passed away Monday, August 3, 2020, at Two Timbers Alternative Living. Family will meet with friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 7, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rosary will begin at 10:00 a.m., Friday, followed by a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ottawa, with military honors by the United States Navy. Mathias was born February 19, 1923, in St. Mary’s, Kansas, the son of Mathias and Rosa (Baumchen) Floersch. He grew up in St. Mary’s, moving to Delia, Kansas, and in 1959 to Ottawa, Kansas. In 2014, Matt moved to Highland, Kansas, where he made his home until his death. Matt served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater from March 1944 to May 1946. Matt was united in marriage to Jean Marie McGrath June 5, 1952, at Delia, Kansas. They were happily married nearly 51 years and had six children, Jim, Matt, Bernice, Frances, Jean, and Janice. He was a lifelong farmer/stockman. Matt was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Ottawa. Matt’s life centered around farming and spending time with family and grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, Dominos and Pitch. Matt and his wife Jean wanted to serve the poorest of the poor. In his later years, he became a strong supporter of the Immaculate Heart School in India and it was a source of great joy for him. He was preceded in death by his wife Jean, August 19, 2003; son Jim Floersch; grandson Matthew Floersch; his parents and 8 siblings, Rosemary McCoy, Gene Floersch, Margaret Glick, Regina Storck, Louise Ronsee, Joe Floersch, and 1 sister and 1 brother that died in childhood. Survivors include five children, Bernice (Craig) Altenhofen of Junction City, Kansas, Francie (John) Falk of Leona, Kansas, Jean (Steve) Frank of Colony, Kansas, Janice (Richard) McPherson of Clarksburg, Maryland, and Matt (Elizabeth) Floersch of Goodlettsville, Tennessee; daughter-in-law, Sandy Floersch-Toothman of Osawatomie, Kansas; twenty-three grandchildren and thirty-five great grandchildren. | 5591 |  | Obituary- Flora, Vaughn Vaughn Leonard Flora January 17, 1945-March 17, 2022 Although Vaughn Flora died decades too soon for all of us who loved him, he lived a vivid and vibrant life unfolding in dazzling decades rooted in his Western Kansas heritage. His catchphrase was “I did the best I could,” but this force of nature’s best was often spectacular, generous, and daring, not to mention wildly inspiring. We, who know Vaughn would tell you of his fierce loyalty, quiet and wry humor, brilliant zest for adventure, and charming intelligence. A dapper dresser in his later years, he was never without his signature hat. Smart as a whip, he was an expert problem-solver and an innate builder and planner who lived for rehabbing yet another house or apartment building. Vaughn was always on the move, walking around and talking on the phone, working on houses, and in the last year, pouring his creativity and know-how into his new home in Lawrence. Most of all, he believed in love and was in love with life itself. Vaughn was born to wonderfully wise parents, Leonard and Billie (Leighton) Flora, on January 17, 1945 in Quinter, KS. He attended Quinter Elementary School, Quinter Junior High, and Quinter High School. But his schooling told only a slim slice of his story growing up in his extended family. He was a member of Future Farmers of America in high school. As a boy, he loved riding his bike five miles from the farm to the bright lights of Quinter, as well as biking ten miles to his grandparents’ home. He was hardly ever without his best friend for life and partner in crime Neal Mann, so much so that teachers and principals simply called out, “Vaughn Neal!” whenever there were shenanigans afoot. Once Vaughn and Neal were even banned from the lunch room for the rest of the school year, which led Vaughn to sneak off to Neal’s house for lunch so that he didn’t have to tell his mom. Vaughn’s love of singing and his beautiful bass voice won him a scholarship to Kansas State University, which he started in 1963. At the very end of that year, he married Rose Owens, also from Quinter, and they lived in Manhattan, where Vaughn began his odyssey toward a agricultural economics degree. Because Vaughn was always drawn to life’s mysteries and big questions, he left for a semester to study philosophy at the University of Kansas. He eventually returned to Manhattan and finished his original degree. Along the way, Vaughn and Rose had three children: Troy in 1964, Trent in 1966, and Trina in 1969. Vaughn and Rose later divorced. Vaughn’s livelihood and activism were rooted in his quest for a better world, from his involvement in the American Agricultural Movement and Kansas Farmers Union to his long stint as “the Democrat” in the Republican-controlled Kansas Statehouse to his deep interests in philosophy, socialism, and other ways people can live more sustainably and equitably. He served for 14 years as the state representative for East Topeka (District 57) in the Kansas House of Representatives. He worked close to the earth, loved Kansas, and wore many hats, staying in tune with his values and community. From an early job as a filling station night attendant in Quinter, he also worked as a meat inspector, drove a fuel truck, harvested wheat, farmed organically, rehabbed houses, and worked as a realtor. He was one of the founders of Kansas Organic Producers (where he was a Vista Volunteer for four years) and the Kansas Rural Center, and a longtime supporter of many ecological groups and institutes. Along the way, he lived in Collyer, Delia, Eudora, Keats, Vinland, Topeka, and Lawrence. Vaughn’s loyalty and political chutzpah made for some memorable moments in his life. He was proud of his legislative work on farm bills to protect small farmers and his efforts to prevent more coal-powered plants, monitor air pollution, reform health care, and protect Kansas water. His life-long passion for affordable housing led him to build T Town in Topeka, providing housing for the elderly and people with disabilities. He was also not above fighting vermin: at one point, to protect then-Governor Kathleen Sebelius, who was speaking at the Kansas State Fair, Vaughn scuffled with a heckling anti-choice protester dressed as a giant cockroach. Although Vaughn was banned from the state fair for life because of the incident, he had no regrets. In early 2010, Vaughn met Julie Michael from Lincoln, NE, through a dating app that led to lots of long phone calls. After they fell in love with each other’s voices, Vaughn drove through a snowstorm to see Julie in person on March 20, 2010, and they fell the rest of the way in love. Julie found out Vaughn was proposing when he called her one day crying that he lost his mother’s wedding ring; she rushed over to crawl on the floor alongside him until they found the ring. He was already on his knees when he asked her to marry him. Julie and Vaughn married on Nov. 1, 2013, a crisp fall day with a bright blue sky full of yellow and red falling leaves. Their small wedding was at Vaughn’s Topeka house, where Vaughn walked Julie down the stone walkway he had built to the music of “Here Comes the Sun.” Their blow-out wedding party was held in Lawrence the following evening, featuring the music of Jimmy Dykes and the Blistonians. Always curious and up for adventure, Vaughn traveled to Russia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Colombia, Cuba, throughout Europe, and to China in the last year of the Cultural revolution. His adventurous spirit led him, in the early 1970s, to live with his family caretaking an isolated ranch near Dinosaur National Park in Northwestern Colorado. In the winter, he rode a horse for 38 miles each way through deep snow to pick up Christmas gifts for his children. Years later, with Julie, he embarked on many a road trip or train trek, reveling in excursions to Sedona, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, and frequently to Memphis and Lincoln. One of Vaughn’s favorite activities was splitting wood and building fires in the stove. Julie and Vaughn spent many sweet and hilarious evenings sitting by the wood-burning stove. When the weather was warmer, by the pond he built. He also loved swimming (thus the pond). A self-acclaimed foodie and proud of it, Vaughn loved to produce and eat good, clean, organic food of all kinds. He was also passionate about singing and dancing at many music festivals. He was a captivating storyteller with a wicked sense of humor and a great laugh. One of Vaughn’s last acts was to renovate his and Julie’s new home in Lawrence. He was proud to have incorporated all he learned over years to make a comfortable, beautiful, energy-efficient, and welcoming home. But his greatest act was his last act: showing us how to die with love and as much presence as he could muster. Although there were so may more projects he wanted to do and places he wanted to visit, he said, “It’s amazing how the things you considered important just fall away when you’re dying. What remains is love.” Vaughn died in that spirit as the full moon set early morning on March 17th surrounded by Julie, her daughter Rebecca Nelms, and one of Vaughn’s closest friends, Dan Bentley. His long goodbye since going on hospice after being diagnosed with cancer last August allowed friends and family from near and far to say goodbye, sing, tell stories, or just hold Vaughn’s hand. Vaugh is survived by his loving wife Julie Flora of the home as well as his children Troy Flora, Topeka; Trent Flora, Delia; and Trina Hand (J.D.), Augusta. He is also survived by his brother Jan Flora (wife Cornelia) of Ames, IA; and nieces Gabriela Flora of Denver and Natasha Flora Shoom-Kirsch (Matt) in Toronto, Canada. He had a slew of grandkids, great-grandkids and great nieces and nephews: Jessica Fisher (husband Jayson and children Zane Crouch, Rolly and Ryder Fisher); Kaylie Flora (and daughter Marlie Shae DeWald); Josie and Jett Hand; Lily Flora, and Sydney and Bailey Shoom-Kirsch. His step-kids are Rebecca Nelms (Pat) of Lincoln, NE; Danny Weisser (Ceil) of New York City; David Weisser (wife Jenny and children Elise, Marin, and Isaac) of Lincoln, NE; Dina Weisser-Holland (husband Chris and children Lilyana and Noah) of Lincoln, NE; and Debra Weisser (children Jonah and Austin) of Fort Collins, CO. Other survivors are his sister-in-law Katie Witham (husband Richard and children Katie Holt and Anna Lee) of Counce, TN.; Dan Michael (wife Debby and children Jennifer and Matthew) of Collierville, TN.; and Susan Stovall (husband Jimmy and children Little Jimmy and Suzanne) of Memphis. He is also survived by Debby Sylvia, his assistant, who he called his guardian angel. He is preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Billie Flora. | 5593 |  | Obituary- Flory, Mark MARK WILT FLORY KILLED IN ACTION Pvt. Mark Wilt Flory, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ebert Flory was reported killed in action somewhere in Germany, January 27, 1945. He was born Aug. 10, 1925, in Junction City, Kans. He graduated from High school at Howard, Kans., and received two months education at Kansas State college, at Manhattan, before entering the service. His basic training was given in Texas then he was sent to England and entered France on D-Day. On June 14, he was wounded and after receiving treatment was permitted to return to battle. He was wounded again on June 16, this time spending five months in hospitals in England. Sometime during the first of Dec. he returned to action. The last letter addressed by him January 26, was received by his grandmother, Mrs. I. B. Wilt. | |

Mrs. Flott worked in the food service at Hallmark Cards before she retired. She was born Sept. 16, 1908, at Formosa, the daughter of Edwin Hart Walker Sr. and Myrtle Evelyn Magnuson Walker. She moved to Topeka in 1927 and to Rossville in 1998. Mrs. Flott was a member of the Oakland Christian Church. She married Charles L. Flott in 1934 at Topeka. He died May 14, 1950. She also was preceded in death by two grandsons, Jerry Dean Flott in February 1998 and Timothy A. Flott in July 1965. Survivors include two sons, Charles Eugene Flott, Topeka, and Gary Hart Flott of Mill, Wyo.; a brother, Edwin H. Walker Jr., Topeka; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Parker-Price Mortuary. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Flott will lie in state after 3 p.m. Wednesday at Parker-Price Mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. | 5595 |  | Obituary- Folsom, Ada Ada May Folsom Mrs. Ada May Folsom, 93, died at St. Mary’s Hospital in Manhattan, Ks., on Monday morning, April 14, 1980. Known as Aunt Ada to relatives and friends, Mrs. Folsom had been a long-time resident in Manhattan before moving to Alta Vista with a daughter in 1972. She was born in Rossville on May 11, 1886, to John T. and Nancy A. Osborn Heslet. Mrs. Folsom was a member of the United Methodist Church, St. Marys, and the Eagles Auxiliary. She was a homemaker all her married life. She was married to Gilbert L. Folsom. He died on October 26, 1955. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Surviving her are three daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Farley and Mrs. Fern Gilliland, Alta Vista, and Mrs. Naomi Massey, Wamego; one granddaughter, Mrs. Ethel Mae DeGraft, Topeka; and three nieces. The family will receive friends at the Cowan-Edwards-Yorgensen Funeral Home in Topeka from 7:00 to 8:30 Tuesday evening. Services will be in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday at 1 p.m., with interment to follow in the Rossville Cemetery. The Reverend Roy Brown will be the officiating minister. He was born on the homestead of his parents southwest of Rossville, January 16, 1869, and had lived in Rossville, Delia and Topeka most of his life. He was a member of the Rossville Methodist Church, the Modern Woodmen of America and the Masonic Lodge. He’s survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lillian Davis, 5027 West Tenth, Topeka; three sons, Benjamin L. of the home; Carl F. Ford of National City, California; and Harold S. Ford, Winfield, Kansas; three sisters, Mrs. Ida James, Mrs. Lula James and Mrs. Emma Davis, all of Rossville. He had eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Rossville Methodist Church with Rev. Don Jones officiating. Burial was in the Rossville Cemetery. | 5598 |  | Obituary- Ford, Henry Henry H. Ford was born May 3, 1836, in Richland County, Ohio, died April 7, 1915, at his home in Rossville, Kas. In 1863 Mr. Ford came to Kansas and drove a stage line, his route being from the Missouri river points to Manhattan, Kas. On July 18th, 1864, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Neddo at Manhattan, Kas. Mr. and Mrs. Ford made their home at Manhattan for about a year after their marriage and in 1865 came to Rossville and located on a farm owned by Eli Nadeau. After a year’s residence on this farm they purchased a farm three miles southwest of Rossville, where they lived for forty-three years. Several years ago Mr. and Mrs. Ford sold the old home place, purchased property in Rossville and moved to town. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ford, two of whom died in infancy. The surviving members of the family are the widow and six children, Mrs. Sherman James and Henry Ford, Jr., of Rossville, Ben Ford of Delia, Kas., Mrs. Chas Hubycka, Mrs. Wm. Ward and Mrs. P. P. Enos of Oklahoma City, Okla. DOD 04-07-1915 HENRY FORD For the third time within a week death has taken one of Rossville’s old residents. Henry Ford died Wednesday at about the noon hour from pneumonia. Mr. Ford had recently recovered from a serious illness, but had not regained his usual health. Friday last he was on the streets of Rossville and was in good spirits. The last attack developed rapidly and his condition became so alarming the first of the week that his children in Oklahoma were summoned. The funeral will be held tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist Church. Interment will be made in the Rossville cemetery. | |
