Mrs. Gilbert at Rest
The funeral of Mrs. Jane E. Gilbert, on last Monday afternoon held at the Presbyterian Church was in charge of Rev. H.L. Nelson of Topeka, a former pastor of the church. He was assisted by the choirs of the Presbyterian and Christian churches. A large number f relatives and friends were present to pay their last tribute of respect to the deceased, who by a long residence in Rossville had endeared herself to them by her life of Christian kindness and unselfishness.
There were many beautiful and appropriate floral offerings. One a wreath with the words "Grandma" in flowers sent by grandchildren in Illinois.
The Rev. Nelson took for his text, "I shall be satisfied, when I awake with thy Likeness," Ps. 17:15. He said the text was suggested to his thoughts as he reflected over the life of Mrs. Gilbert as he knew her, that he did not look upon her as dead buy as awakening to the new life of the eternities with God, for which her life here had been a preparation. He spoke many words of comfort to the bereaved family. She was laid to rest in the Rossville cemetery.
Jane Eliza Coleman was born at Albion, Ill., May 22, 1839. At the age of 18 years she united with the Christian church. She was joined in marriage to Steward McAdams at Washington, Ind. Sept. 3, 1863, moved to Kansas in 1869, locating 3 miles west of Indianola, Shawnee County. The following year they bought property at Rossville where she lived and reared her children. Steward McAdams died Oct. 10, 1871 and was buried in the Rossville cemetery.
Mrs. McAdams and Walter G. Gilbert were married Sept. 16, 1875 and continued to reside in the McAdams home until about two years ago when they moved to Saragosa, Reeves County, Texas, as a temporary residence, renting the home in Rossville, expecting to return if not satisfied. They found kind and generous neighbors in the new home and enjoyed living there.
A few weeks ago she fell ill and her sons hastened to her bedsides. She rallied and they had hopes of her recovery. One son remained to assist the husband in nursing her back to health. She suddenly grew worse and passed away on Oct. 29, 1914, and by her request was brought back to the old home and her body placed in the same room and place once occupied by Margaret, the daughter who passed on several years ago and for whom she never ceased to mourn. There were five McAdams children, two sons and three daughters. One daughter, Lucinda, passed away in childhood. The other, Margaret, died in young womanhood. The surviving daughter, Mrs. E.G. Jamieson of Moline, Ill., and the two sons, E.M. McAdams, of Joplin, Mo., S.C. McAdams, of Walter, Okla., were present at the funeral. Mrs. Gilbert was the daughter of Thomas J. Coleman and sister of the late Andy Coleman of near Menoken. Two sisters survive her, Mrs. Emma Ellis of Topeka and Mrs. M.A. Killian of San Diego, Ca. and two brothers, Dumas V. Coleman, of San Diego, Ca. and S.T. Coleman of Washington, Ind.

Sleep,
And sweet the strains that angels
Pour,
O, why should we in anguish
Weep?
They are not lost but gone before."

Will to Work Kills

Those who read the recent story of the death of 16-year-old Jerry Giles at Rossville must have paused to ponder his fate. Jerry collapsed in a field, the victim, apparently, of a heart attack.

For the two weeks prior to his death, Jerry had worked like a beaver. He had labored at odd jobs in the mornings, farm work in the afternoons and at a service station at night. The boy's mother is a widow.

A physician attending the boy after his collapse said he believed overwork caused the heart attack.

The drive which kept young Jerry Giles busy at a series of jobs proved too much for his 16-year-old body. Yet the enterprise of a youth who wanted work, found it, and gave it everything he had, must be admired. It also makes one wonder about the idle 16-year-olds standing on the corner combing their ducktailed hair, doesn't it?

Obituary- Gittings, Polly
Obituary- Gittings, Polly
Polly Rachel Gittings, daughter of P.A. and Mary Sebring, was born in Sebringville, Canada, October 7, 1861, died April 11, 1929, aged 67 years, 6 months and 4 days.

She was united in marriage Feb. 9, 1882, to Henry Clinton Gittings, at Warn ego, Kansas. They made their home on a farm near Wamego until 1901, at which time they moved to Alma, Kansas. In 1908 they moved back to Wamego, where Mr. Gittings died January 13, 1917.

Mrs. Gittings was united with the Methodist church in Wamego in 1878 and at the time of passing to her eternal reward had a record of 50 years in her mission here on earth— which was to know, love and serve the Lord.

Polly Gittings exemplified the car¬dinal virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity in every thought and action of her well-spent life. Her’s was a life of service—to God and to her fellow human beings. She accepted trials and tribulations in the spirit of God’s holy will and none ever heard her complain against the part she had to bear. Her example and influence will pattern the efforts of all who came in contact with her, so that they, too, may attain the end for which they have been created.

Just six weeks ago she helped with loving care to lay her sister, Mrs. James Banks to rest in peace.

She is survived by three daughters Mrs. Tom Leonard, Enid, Okla.; Mrs. Ted Fields, Rossville, Kansas; Mrs.; LeRoy Johnson, Seneca, Kansas; five grandchildren, Mrs. B. Honeycutt, Los Angeles, Calif.; Hugh and Loretta Leonard, Enid Okla.; Bobbie and Harold Johnson, Seneca, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Alice Jacobs, Wamego. Mrs. Lucinda Breymeyer preceded her to the Great Unknown April 15, 1902 and Mrs. Jas. Banks, March 1, 1929. Four brothers remain, John Sebring, Lake Side, Wash.; David Sebring, Wamego; A1 Sebring, Palo Alto, Calif.; and Melvin Sebring, McFarland, Kansas.

A short funeral service was held at the home of her daughter, Myrtle Johnson, Seneca, Kans., on Friday, April 12, conducted by Rev. L. B. Pruitt, and the remains were then brought to the home of Mr. James Banks in Wamego. The final services were held in the Wamego Methodist church conducted by the pastor, Rev. Westerman, assisted by Rev Pruitt, of Seneca. She was laid to rest beside her husband in the family lot in the Wamego cemetery, Saturday, April 13.

The following friends from Rossville were in Wamego for the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Witter, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Page, Mrs. I.B. Wilt, Miss Blanche Parr, Mrs. Frank Zook, Mrs. Fred Mason, Mrs. David Davis, Mr. Sherman James.

Word came this morning about 9 o’clock of the death of Mrs. Polly Gittings at the home of a daughter in Seneca, Kansas. Mrs. Gittings is the mother of Mrs. Ted Fields. Mr. and Mrs, Fields left immediately for Seneca. No details were received of the cause of death but it was totally unexpected. Burial probably will be at Wamego.
