Obituary- Heslet, Charles
Charles Heslet Ends His Life With a Razor

Charles Heslet, committed suicide early Monday morning by cutting his left jugular vein with a razor at the home of his sister, Mrs. Cordelia Swearing on Pearl street. The deed was committed while he lay in his bed.

Mrs. Swearingen discovered his tragic ending about six o'clock Monday morning when she received no response to her calls to him to come to breakfast. Mr. Heslet was occupying the front room of the Swearingen home while Mrs. Swearingen and another brother, Joseph Heslet, slept in rooms on the second floor.

Coroner H.L. Clark was notified and after viewing the body he announced no inquest was necessary.

Marshal Vern Miller was probably the last person who saw Heslet alive. Heslet appeared on the streets about 1:30 Monday morning and talked for awhile as was his custom at times when he claimed he could not sleep. It was sometime after this hour that the deed was committed.

Heslet attempted suicide about 15 years ago while living in Topeka, by slashing his throat from ear to ear, but the attempt was unsuccessful. The attempt cost him the loss of natural speech and he has been unable to talk above a whisper since. The first attempt was due to domestic trouble. The deed of Monday is also believed to have been caused by brooding over his wife's refusal to live with him, together with ill health that kept him in a perpetual state of melancholy.

Taking his own life seemed to be a favorite topic with him in talking with people about town during periods of depression. About two months ago Heslet gave up his job as night watchman because he was afraid to rust himself with a gun.

Charles was a native son of Rossville. He was born here March 18, 1873 and except for brief periods of migration to other points has always made his home here. At various periods of the past he has been marshal of the town and was considered one of the most courageous officers the city has employed.

He was married to Miss Maud Fry in Topeka, June 20, 1899. Their union did not prove a congenial one and after a few years they separated although no divorce was secured by either party. Mrs. Heslet attended the funeral.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Basquin. The body was interred in the Rossville cemetery.

The surviving relatives are his wife, three brothers, James H. of Washington, D.C., Joseph of Rossville and Jacob; five sisters, Mrs. M.S. McElvain, Mrs. Ella Hopkins, Mrs. Cordelia Swearingen, all of Rossville; Mrs. F.M. Cooper, of Eskridge, Mrs. Mina Wax of Maple Hill, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In Memoriam
In sad and loving memory of our dear husband and father, John Heslet, who passed away 7 years ago, December 22, 1920.

He bade no one a let farewell. He said good-bye to none. His loving heart had ceased to beat and before we knew it he was gone. His cheerful smile and kind ways we pleasantly recall. He had a kind word for everyone and died beloved by all; our hearts will filled with sorrow, to think he had to go.

Sadly missed by Mrs. N.A. Heslet and children.

In Memory of Norma Heslet
March 5, 1924 - March 4,2004

They say times heals pain But after three years I still feel the same.
The tears are never ending; the sadness just never goes.
I hide it so well, so that it never really shows
There is a place in my heart for you alone.
A piece of my life only you can own.
For deep in my heart a memory is kept
Of the one I love and will never forget.
Memories are something no one can steal
Death is a wound no one can heal.
Life goes on, I know it’s true But not the same since I’ve lost you!
Love Always & Forever, Your daughter, Rosa

Obituary- Higginbotham, Cyrus 2
Obituary- Higginbotham, Cyrus 2
His was a life of usefulness, a man whose word could be depended upon, public spirited and always ready and eager to help the needy. He always had a kind and cheery greeting for all whom he met and helped many young men in his employ to enter business for themselves.
Mr. Higginbotham was practically a selfmade man. His parents were a well-known old Virginia family who lost the greater part of their property at the close of the Civil war.
After retiring from the mercantile business, Mr. Higginbotham continued to maintain his Insurance and Notary office up to the time of his death. He was down to his office as usual the day before he was stricken by the paralytic stroke that ended his earthly life a day later. His agency of the Aetna Building and Loan Association was one of the oldest.
The funeral service held at the home Tuesday, July 11, at 2 p.m., was attended by hundreds of old-time friends and neighbors, who sorrowfully followed his remains to their resting place in Rossville cemetery. Rev. H.L. Nelson, of Topeka, conducted the service at the house. The Masonic ritual service was exemplified at the grave.

C.W. Higginbotham Victim of Paralysis

Cyrus W. Higginbotham, aged 86, died at 5 o’clock Sunday evening following a stroke of paralysis he suffered Saturday forenoon. Mr. Higginbotham was one of the earliest settlers of Shawnee county and Rossville township and one of the founders of the city of Rossville. At his suggestion the town was named Rossville after Senator Ross.
For fifty-six years Mr. Higginbotham had resided on his original homestead, the house until recently being just outside the city limits.
He was a member of the A.O.U.W., and a charter member of Hesperian Lodge, A.F. and A.M. which was charted in October 1871.
The funeral service was conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the residence conducted by the Rev. H.L. Nelson, of Topeka. Interment was made in Rossville cemetery.
A complete obituary with a story of his life will be published next week, accompanying his picture, at the request of the family.

Cyrus Higginbotham at Rest
Cyrus Higginbotham, who died early Sunday morning in a Tope-ka hospital, following an opera¬tion performed a week previous, was laid to rest Tuesday after¬noon in the Rossville cemetery. The funeral services were held at the home conducted by the Rev. H.L. Nelson, of Topeka. The service was attended by a large number of sorrowing friends of the family who had known Cyrus from childhood and the genuine sympathy shown has been very comforting to the bereaved father sister and brother.
Cyrus was an exemplary [sic] boy and his quiet and equitable dis¬position won him friends where ever he went. From his childhood he had been a home loving boy and it was not until August of last year he severed home ties and struck out for himself to enter business in a strange com¬munity.
He was born in Rossville, Feb. 8, 1887 and had just passed his 32nd year February of this year. He graduated from Rossville schools in 1904 and was president of his class. Later he attended Washburn academy and graduated with highest honors of his class. Here he was active in athletics and captained his college baseball team. After finishing at Washburn he completed the full course in Strickler’s business col¬lege.
Returning home he engaged in farming and stock raising until August 1918 when he sold his interests and went to Denton, Montana, and engaged in the real estate, loan and insurance busi¬ness.
Cyrus was full of patriotism and during the war made three unsuccessful attempts to enlist, being rejected because of vericose veins. He wanted always to do his share of any task to be per¬formed and his cheerful disposi¬tion was only one of his many lovable traits.
Early in life he united with the Presbyterian church and endeavored always to live a Christian life.
Beside his father, sister and brother his departure is sincerely mourned by his lifetime com¬panions and a large circle of friends in this community.

Obituary- Higginbotham, Cyrus W. 1
Obituary- Higginbotham, Cyrus W. 1
Cyrus W. Higginbotham, the Last of the Pioneers, Who Came to Rossville in the Pre-War Days
Cyrus W. Higginbotham was born in Amherst County, Virginia, September 11, 1836, and died July 9, 1922, at his home in Rossville, Kansas, where he had lived for 67 years, aged 85 years, 9 months and 28 days.
He was the son of Elizabeth and Aaron Higginbotham, the youngest child of a large family, all of whom have passed on.
At the age of 19 he came west to seek a home and in 1855 landed in Shawnee county—-although at that time the county had not been organized as a county and was a portion of the Third dis¬trict of the Territory of Kansas.
Seven years later, on Septem¬ber 15, 1862, at the age of 26, he was married to Henrietta Button, the only child of Rev. and Mrs.
A.R. Button, of Topeka. Three children were born to this union, all of whom have passed on. Mrs. Henrietta Higginbotham died in 1866. Five years later, on Octo¬ber 31, 1871, he was married to Mary Howard, youngest child of Jared and Mary Howard of Shaftsbury, Vermont. Six children were born to this union, two of whom, Edith I. and George A. Higginbotham, survive. Mrs. Mary Higginbotham passed on March 8, 1919, after a wedded life of nearly fifty years spent in the home in Rossville she came to as a bride. Cyrus Howard Hig¬ginbotham, the youngest child of this union, who grew to manhood here, died May 4, 1919.
Mr. Higginbotham was one of the contractors who helped build the Union Pacific railroad be¬tween Kansas City and Denver. For several years he was in charge of an Indian trading post and in those years he learned to talk fluently the Pottawatomie tongue which in later years drew much of the Indian trade to his mercantile establishment.
In 1871 the present site of the town of Rossville was laid out for a town and named Edna, but at the suggestion of Mr. Higginbotham, Col. Geo. W. Veale and A.C. Sherman, who purchased the townsite of Anthony Navarre, changed the name to Rossville, in honor of an Indian agent W.G. Ross, a brother of Senator Ross. The town was incorporated ten years later, in 1881.
He helped organize the first church in Rossville, the Baptist, in 1871, and was a faithful mem¬ber, supporting it generously until it disbanded and then contin¬ued his support to other church organizations of the town.
He was a charter member of the first Masonic lodge in Shawnee county, the old Indianola lodge, and the first Worshipful Master of Hesperian Lodge, of Rossville, chartered in 1872, He was also a member of A.O.U.W. and I.O.O.F. orders.
For nearly twenty-five years be served on the school board and as president of the board for fifteen years. In township affairs he served as treasurer for a number of years and in other capacities, on many occasions without oppo¬sition.
Mr. Higginbotham was in the mercantile business nearly forty
years, first at Indianola and later in Rossville. He was a pioneer in the pureblood, livestock busi¬ness of the state, and was always interested in the improving of livestock.

Obituary- Higginbotham, David W. 1
Again the dread Death Angel has folded his somber pinions within the home of our cherished and respected fellow citizens, Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus W. Higginbotham, taking their darling little baby boy, and adding another little grave to the sad little row of baby tombstones, in the family plot, in our village cemetery. The little one died Tuesday last; was four months old; had filled their home with joy and gladness, was doubly precious from the loss of five little ones during past years, and now this little form is taken from them, and they are indeed bereaved. The funeral took place Wednesday, conducted by Rev. McCabe of Topeka, whose sermon was most touching and impressive.
