 | Obituary- Hlavacek, Anna
Mrs. Anna Hlavacek was born July 12, 1993, in Czech community of Hulc, Russia, and departed this life May 27, 1930 at the home of her sister, Mrs. Frank Hejtmanek, near Delia. She was 47 years, 10 months and 5 days old at the time of her death.
July 4, 1892, she moved to Chicago, Ill., with her parents. In the same year they moved to Kansas and located southwest of Delia, where she grew to womanhood.
In 1912 she was married to John Hlavacek of Omaha, Neb. They moved to Redfield, S. Dakota, where they lived until 1924 when they returned to Kansas and located in Topeka and lived for five years.
Mrs. Hlavacek was united with the Presbyterian church early in life and always remained an active member. He life exemplified the Golden Rule. The funeral services were held at the Czech Presbyterian church, Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Joseph Leksa of Springs, Kans. and Rev. H.W. Apel of Delia.
She leaves to mourn her loss, one daughter Olga Sophia, age 9, one brother, Slavonie Vacek, of Blaine, Kanss., three sisters, Mrs. George Hejtmanek, Mrs. Frank Hejtmanek, both of Delia, and Marie L. Vacek, Chicago, Illinois and many other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Evelyn Hobart, 79, Delia, died Tuesday, September 11, 1979, at her home.
She was born August 22, 1900, at Delia, the daughter of Cyrus H. and Nellie McNeive Moore.
Mrs. Hobart taught school east of Delia one or two years before her marriage.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Altar Society of the church and was a former member of the Extension Homemakers Unit, all of Delia.
She was married to Louis J. Hobart on May 25, 1921, at Delia. He died August 23, 1969.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mary Macha, Delia, and Mrs. Joan Hofmann, Camp Springs, Md.; a son, Donald A. Hobart, Destin, Fla.; 17 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Services were at 16 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Delia. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys. Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys.

Mr. J.F. Hobart passed away at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka, March 29, 1944. Mr. Hobart was born in Bohemia in 1860, and came to this country when a young man. He was married in Iowa in 1888., and he and Mrs. Hobart celebrated their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary last June. He was the father of ten children, of whom six are living, who with his wife are his survivors. He was a kind and friendly man, always ready to stop and greet his many friends.
Those left are his widow; and children: Mrs. Agnes Van Benthem, of Atchison, Mrs. Josie Anderson of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Christina Copeland, Tacoma, Wash., Edward Hobart, S.K. 3/c Camp Perry, Va., Joseph Hobart of Topeka, and Louis of the home; and eight grandchildren, of whom four are grandsons, serving in the armed forces.
Service were held at the Sacred Heart Church Friday morning at 10 o'clock with a requiem high mass, Rev. Fr. Twomey officiating. Pall bearers were Pete and Joe Lane, Ed Macha, Wm. McCarty, Joe McNeive and Nate Burgett.

Services were held Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Delia, for Joseph G. Hobart, 62, of Dodge City, former Delia resident. Mr. Hobart died Aug. 19 at his home after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage.
Born Feb. 17, 1906, at Cleburne, he had lived in the Delia community from 1916 to 1942. A resident of Dodge City the past 15 years, he had been employed by the state grain inspection department 25 years, and worked in Topeka, Coffeyville, and Dodge City.
Mr. Hobart is survived by two brothers, Louis, of Delia, and Edward, of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Interment was made in Mount Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys.

Mr. Hobart was married to Evelyn Moore on May 25, 1921, in Delia. Besides his widow, he leaves:

Services were held Saturday from Sacred Heart Church, with interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys, by the Verschelden Funeral Home.
The pall bearers: John Seitz, Frank McNeive, Joe Floersch, Kenneth Kerwin, Martin Brock, and Ben Simecka, all of Delia.

Services were held Saturday at Delia for Mr. Louis Hobart who passed away suddenly Wednesday while mowing his lawn, He suffered a heart attack, he was born May 29, 1894 at Pocahontas, Iowa. He has lived in Delia since 1917. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Delia. A member of Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 Rossville, Kansas. He was a township trustee many years. He is survived by his wife Evelyn Hobart of the home, two daughters Mrs. Mary Macha of Rossville, and Mrs. Joan Hofman, Camp Springs, Md., a son Donald Hobart, Las Vegas, Nev. and 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery at St. Marys. Rossville American Legion had charge of the military service.

HOBART, deceased, and all others concerned, that on the 25th day of June, 1969, the undersigned were by the probate court of Jackson County, Kansas duly appointed and qualified as co-administrators of the estate of LOUIS J. Howard H. Hobrock, 84, of Topeka, passed away Monday, August 15, 2011. Howard was born November 12, 1926, in Princeton, Kansas, son of Fred and Minnie (Krusa) Hobrock. He graduated from Princeton High School in 1943 and the University of Kansas in 1949, with a Civil Engineering degree. Howard served as a Captain in the US Navy from 1944 - 1978. Howard was united in marriage to Laura Lee Farley on November 7, 1954, in Topeka. He worked as an Engineer for 56 years at Finney & Turnipseed. Howard was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and served as the church treasurer for 20 years. He was also involved in the Kiwanis, where he was a past president of the Southwest Kiwanis and current member of the Downtown Kiwanis; American Legion; Military Officers Association of America; Reserve Officers Association; Military Order of the World Wars; Fellow & Lifetime Member of American Society of Civil Engineers; and served as Commissioner of Boy Scouts of America. Howard is survived by his wife Laura, Topeka; a son, Brian (Susan) Hobrock, St. Francis; a daughter, Marta (Brian) Howard, Delia; grandchildren, Jacob (Miranda) Russell, Joshua Russell, Chance Flobrock, Brooks Hobrock, Lane Hobrock, and Samantha Howard; a great grandchild, Carter Russell. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Lena Davis and Ann Coughlin, a brother, Irwin Hobrock, and a granddaughter, Amanda Howard. Darrell Allan Hobs on, 40, of Atlantic, Iowa, died of cancer Sunday, May 15, in the Atlantic Memorial Hospital where he had been admitted the day before. He had been in failing health the past several months.
He was born August 11, 1925 In Casper, Wyoming. He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and was employed in Wichita until June of 1954 when he became associated with the Upjohn Company as a salesman in the Iowa area.
He leaves as survivors his wife, the former Norma Crow, daughter of Mrs. Lola Crow of Rossville; a daughter, Patricia, 13, and a son Martin, 8, all of the home; his mother of San Diego, California; his father of Independence, Kansas; and one brother, Lt. Col. Claude I. Hobson of Omaha, Neb.
Funeral services and burial were at Atlantic.

 | Obituary- Hodges, Ray R. Hilton Hodges
Ray Hilton Hodges, 74, longtime Topeka radio and television broadcaster, died Wednesday, April 6, 1988, at a Topeka retirement home.
Mr. Hodges was associated with WIBW in Topeka from early in 1936 until he retired in 1978. He previously worked a year at station KMMJ in Clay Center, Neb.
Mr. Hodges duties at WIBW included writing broadcast copy and covering and announcing news and special events, including Gov. Alfred Landon’s bid for the presidency in 1936. He also hosted studio entertainment shows and the traveling Saturday Night Roundups.
He also reported state high school basketball tournaments and Washburn, Kansas and Kansas State basketball and football games.
Mr. Hodges was stage announcer for the Kansas Free Fair and Mid-America Fair 25 years. He served 27 years as official pronouncer for the annual Shawnee County Spelling Bee and All-Kansas Spelling Bee, both sponsored annually by The Topeka Daily Capital and later The Capital-Journal.
He was a Navy flight instructor during World War II.
He was born May 23, 1913, at Mount Clare, Neb., the son of Fred N. and Ada Garver Hodges. He was graduated from Clay Center, Neb. High School in 1930. He attended Doane College at Crete, Neb., and the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis.
Mr. Hodges was a member of Countryside United Methodist Church, Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 204, Friends of Hospice and Combat Air Museum, all in Topeka. He also was a member of Clay Center, Neb. Lodge No. 139, AF&AM, and American Association of Retired Persons.
He was named Topeka’s Young Man of the Year in 1942. During the 1940’s he was president of the Downtown Lions Club, and active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce and Boys’ Club of Topeka. He had served on the boards of the American Red Cross and Hospice Inc., and was a troop chairman for the Boy Scouts of American.
He was married to Dorothy L. Kenna in 1937 at St. Louis, Mo. She died in 1983.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jane Tetuan, Topeka; a son, Rob Hodges, Topeka; a brother, Wayne Hodges, Tulsa, Okla.; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Countryside United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Hodges will lie in state until 9 p.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Robert B. Hoferer, Jr. died Thursday, March 11, 2021 at his home in Shawnee.
He was born August 27, 1943 the son of Robert B. Hoferer, SR. and Margaret M. Graf Hoferer. He lived in the Sandy Hook community most of his life. He attended Stone Elementary School in rural Rossville, and St. Marys High School. Bob was a truck driver and farmer. He married Irina Morozova on November 20, 2001 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He is survived by his wife Irina of the home; his stepson, Michail Zharov, whom he cared for like his own son, Moscow, Russia, Federation; a stepdaughter, Olga Kozelkova, Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and four step-grandchildren.a |

ST. MARYS- Robert B. Hoferer Sr., age 91, of St. Marys, Kansas died Tuesday, October 12, 2005 at the St. Marys Community Hospital.
He was born October 30, 1913 in Wamego, Kansas,, the son of Charles and Ada Goodman Hoferer.
He had lived in the Sandy Hook community many years.
He grew up in the Wamego community and attended Red Top School and St. Bernard Catholic School. Mr. Hoferer was a farmer and stockman. He did custom farm work and had been a truck driver for Riss and Company for several years. Robert was a school bus driver for St. Marys Grade School. He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Wamego before he moved to St. Marys where he was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council No 657. He was a member of the Red Poll Cattle Assn. at Lincoln, NE.
He was married to Margaret M. Graf on April 15, 1942 at St. Marys.
Immediate survivors, his wife Margaret of the home; a son, Robert B. Hoferer, Jr. St. Marys; a daughter, Mary Lou Wells, St. Marys; three sisters, Margaret Reilly, Marie Cain and Patricia Grill, all of Topeka; 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday, October 14, 2005 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys.
Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, St. Marys.
He will lie in state after 2:00 P.M. Thursday, October 13, 2005 at Piper Funeral Home in St. Marys. Where there will be a Prayer Vigil at 7:00 P.M.

She was born Aug. 23, 1947, at Topeka, the daughter of Ed and Mary Hobart Macha. She was graduated from Providence Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.
Mrs. Hoferer was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys.
She was married to Herbert N. Green in 1969 at Kansas City, Kan. He died in 1970. She was married to Robert Hoferer Jr., May 6, 1972. They were divorced.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Green and Rebecca Hoferer, both of the home; her parents, Ed and Mary Macha, Delia; and five brothers, Wayne Macha, Ramona, Calif., Don Macha, Rossville, Ken Macha, Topeka, Bill Macha, Santee, Calif., and Chuck Macha, Carlsbad, Calif.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church here. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery at St. Marys. Mrs. Hoferer will lie in state after 10 a.m. Monday at Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday. LaVerne was a member of Willard Baptist Church.
On July 3,1948, she married Marvin L. Hoffman in Topeka. He preceded her in death on April 22, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Kay Oiler, brother, Otis Reed, and twin sister, Lorraine. Marvin L. Hoffman, 81, Topeka, died Friday, April 22, 2005, at Midland Hospice House.
He was born Jan. 6, 1924, in Halstead, the son of William “Babe” and Ida Belle Dawson Hoffman.
Marvin was a member of Willard Baptist Church, Jimmy Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion and Philip Billard Post No. 1650 of the VFW.
He served in the Army. Marvin played for many years in his band, Marvin Hoffman and the Sage Brush Boys.
He married LaVerne Adkins on July 3, 1948, in Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Kay Oiler and Pam Richey and her husband, Harold; two sons, Marvin Hoffman Jr. and his wife, Sherri, and Bill Hoffman and his wife, Coy, all of Topeka; grandchildren, Rich Deiter, Megan Richey, Kim Miller, Traci and Jasen Hoffman, Jarod Wright, and Lacey and Brady Hoffman; and two great-grandchildren, Colton and Ashlyn Hoffman Jr.
Marvin was preceded in death by a brother, William Hoffman Jr.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 N.W. Independence. Burial will be in Dover Cemetery in Dover. “Marv” Leon Hoffman, Jr., 67, of Topeka, passed away on January 31, 2023 at Stormont Vail Hospital.
He was born April 5, 1955 to Marvin and LaVerne (Adkins) Hoffman in Topeka, Kansas.
Marv graduated from Rossville High School in 1973. After graduation, Marv worked on his families farm for several years before starting his career in construction. He worked for Schmidtlein Excavating Inc. for over 20 years before retiring.
Marv married Stephanie McGinnis in May of 1974. Together they had 2 children, Traci and Jasen. They later divorced.
On June 22, 2002, he married Sherri Hoffman (Jordan– Wright) in Willard, Kansas. Together, they blended their family to include Jared Wright.
Marv loved visiting with family and friends. He enjoyed being outside, fishing, and gardening. He was extremely prideful of his family, and loved his children dearly.
Marvin is survived by his loving wife, Sherri; children, Traci Hoffman, Jasen (Kayla) Hoffman, Jared Wright; siblings, Pam Richey and Bill (Coy) Hoffman; grandchildren, Aiden Hoffman, Callan Hoffman, Brier Hoffman, Audrie Anderson, and Jackson Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Kay Oller.
Visitation will be held Monday, February 6, 2023, 5:00 pm till 7:00 pm at Parker - Price Funeral Home.
Graveside Service will follow at the Maple Hill Cemetery.

Betty was born in St. Marys KS November 26, 1932 the daughter of Wayne William and Agnes Marie (DeDonder) Huntsman. She graduated from St. Marys High in 1950. Betty married Merlin “Mike" Hogan on November 28, 1951 in St. Marys, he preceded her in death in 2006. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. Betty was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Survivors include three sons, Michael Hogan (Marlene), Topeka, Rodney Hogan (Carla), Topeka, Scott Hogan (Margie), Auburn; three daughters, Vickie Brobst (Paul), Auburn, Lori Kokenge (Randy), Topeka and Nancy Musick (Mike), Overbrook. Other survivors include 17 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; three sisters, Peggy Seele, Texas, Judy Carlson, St. Marys, Deannie Kovar, St. Marys; and a brother, John Huntsman, Texas.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation with family will be Monday March 7, 2011, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5973 SW 25th St. Topeka KS 66614, where a parish rosary will be prayed at 5:30. Hogan, she is survived by her father Mr. Cullen and her sister, Anne Cullen of Rossville, and an aunt, Mrs. Harry Gutshall of this community.

She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, Sgt. G. J. Hogan, infant daughter Mary Louise, her father James Cullen, of Rossville, one sister, Anne Cullen and a brother John Cullen of Rossville, a host of relatives and friends.

MAUDE IRENE THOMPSON
Malde Irene Thompson, was born
August 23, 1884, at Beloit, Kans. and passed away Oct. 31st, at her home in Rossville, at the age of 54 years 2 months and 9 days.
On April 12, 1905 she was married to Ray Hogan of Beloit, and to this union four children were born. Two daughters and two sons. She was a most devoted wife and mother, always ready to share the troubles of others and to give all for the welfare of her family.
She had been in ill health for four years and while knowing her days were numbered, made plans for the welfare and happiness of all, the family even up to a few hours before her departure.
She was loved by all who knew her and will be sadly missed by all her friends and loved ones.
While a small child she joined the Methodist church at Beloit, and later transferred her membership to the community church of Olathe, Kans., where she was still a member.
Those who mourn her departure are her husband, Ray Hogan, Lois Mae and Raymond of the home. Mr. and Mrs. Homer Hogan, Pauline and Kenneth of Olathe; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bender, Frances, Phyllis and Gertrude of DeSoto; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Thompson, and sister, Mrs. Harry Nay; one brother, Guy Thompson all of Beloit, and many other relatives and friends.

OVERLAND PARK – Bruce Alan Hoglund, 25, Overland Park, died Thursday at a Kansas City, Kan., medical center. He had been injured Thursday in a traffic accident in Prairie Village, a Prairie Village Police Department spokesman said.
He was born Sept. 6, 1954, at Topeka, the son of Harold and Rosella Zlatnik Hoglund and lived most of his life in Overland Park.
Mr. Hoglund was a sub-contractor for American Home Exterior Inc., Kansas City.
He was a member of Village United Presbyterian Church, Prairie Village.
Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hoglund, Overland Park; two brothers, Douglas Hoglund, Kansas City, Kan., and Bradley W. Hoglund, Overland Park, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Zlatnik, Delia.

OLATHE — Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Village Presbyterian Church in Overland Park for Harold M. Hoglund, 63, Overland Park. He died Saturday, Oct. 22, 1988, at an Olathe nursing center.
Mr. Hoglund was a mathematics teacher at Indian Hills Junior High School in the Shawnee Mission School District before he retired in 1980. He had previously taught at Lecompton High School in Lecompton.
Mr. Hoglund served in the Army Air Force in World War II.
He was born Sept. 7, 1925, in Osage City, the son of Clarence C. and Hulda Hedbero Hoglund. He lived in the Overland Park area since 1965.
He was graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan in 1950 and earned his masters degree from the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
Mr. Hoglund was a member of Kansas National Education Association, National Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa honorary education fraternity, and Village Presbyterian Church in Overland Park.
His wife, the former Rosella J. Zlatnik, survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Douglas M. Hoglund, Kansas City, Kan., and Bradley W. Hoglund, Farmingdale, N.Y.; three brothers, Glen Hoglund, Mesa, Ariz., Garland Hoglund, Tempe, Ariz., and Donald Hoglund, Ottawa; and two grandchildren.

January 27, 1967 — May 21, 2020
St. Marys—Douglas J. Hohman, 53, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2020, at his rural St. Marys home.
He was born on January 27, 1967, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Kenneth D. and Patricia A. Malone Hohman. Doug grew up in Pittsburgh. and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh.
He moved to the St. Marys community in 1992.
Doug was employed for nearly 25 years at The Onyx Collection in Belvue. He was one of their first salesmen. Doug was the sales office manager, and then he managed the production order scheduling. He was beloved by his employers and his coworkers. Doug was also instrumental in the early success of St. Mary's Whistle Stop, which was a family business.
Family was everything to him. Doug's 10-year-old godson and nephew recently wrote this in a composition for school: "When Uncle Doug comes over for a holiday, he brings joy with him. He has amazing stories of his past with his family and friends. He loves all his relatives so much."
Those who knew Doug well describe him as humble, generous, funny, kind, dependable -- these are traits we all aspire to, but Doug personified them. He lived his Faith every day as a loving husband and father, and will be missed beyond words by his family and friends. Missed, but never forgotten.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth D. Hohman on April 27, 1983.
Douglas J. Hohman and Kim A. Checinski were united in marriage on July 6, 1991, in Pittsburgh. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include his mother, Patricia A. Hohman; his children, Patrick Hohman, Anthony (Bernadette) Hohman, Monica (Matthew) Massett, John Hohman and Alexander Hohman; his siblings, Paul (Charmayne) Hohman, Dan (Jennifer) Hohman, Judy (Dave) Brown, Maureen (Glenn) Romanoski, Karen (Michael) Bryan, and Laura (Steve) Fullerton; his grandson, Louis.

She was born September 17, 1897, in West Liberty, KY, the daughter of Mathew and Elizabeth Caskey Lewis. She lived most of her life in the Silver Lake and Rossville areas.
Mrs. Holcomb attended church in Silver Lake. She was a member of the Silver Lake Community Club, Rossville Countryside Club, and the XYZ Club in Silver Lake.
She married Clifford Holcomb on April 4, 1918, in Topeka. He died February 9, 1979. Mrs. Holcomb also was preceded in death by a son, Clyde Holcomb, on May 7, 1981.
Survivors include two grandsons, Thomas Holcomb, Topeka, and Robert Holcomb, Houston, TX; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Her graveside service was Thursday at Prairie Home Cemetery northwest of Topeka.

Mrs. Holcomb attended church in Silver Lake. She was a member of the Silver Lake Community Club, Rossville Countryside Club and the XYZ Club in Sliver Lake.
She married Clifford Holcomb on April 4, 1910, in Topeka. He died Feb. 9, 1979. Mrs. Holcomb also was preceded in death by a son, Clyde Holcomb, on May 7, 1901.
Survivors include two grandsons, Thomas Holcomb, Topeka, and Robert Holcomb, Houston; five great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Prairie Home Cemetery northwest of Topeka. Mrs. Holcomb will lie in state from noon to 9 p.m. today at Davidson Funeral Home where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.

WAMEGO — Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Stewart Funeral Home here for Horace H. Holder, 74, Wamego, who died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1992, at his home.
Mr. Holder had worked for the Topeka Supply Depot, later was marshal at Rossville, was named chief of police in 1962 at Wamego, then worked from 1969 until he retired for the Kansas Department of Transportation.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was born May 13, 1918, at Havensville, the son of Hugh and Elsa Lee Holder.
Mr. Holder was a member of the Christian Church in Rossville, Harold Johnson Post No. 172 of the American Legion in Wamego, and a past member of Hesperian Lodge No. 111, AF&AM, in Rossville.
He was married to Lauretta M. Warrington on Sept. 5, 1941, in Bastrop, Texas. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Horace H. Holder II, Fulton, N.Y., and Steven A. Holder, Topeka; and eight grandchildren.
Burial will be in Wamego City Cemetery. Mr. Holder will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where family and friends will meet from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Contributions may be made to the Horace Holder Memorial Fund to be designated at a later time by relatives and left with the funeral home.

 | Obituary- Hollenbeck, Leonard LEONARD J. HOLLENBECK PASSED AWAY APRIL 28
Leonard J. Hollenbeck, died April 28, at a hospital in Albany, New York, after a brief illness. News of his death came to Rossville relatives the latter part of the week from his daughter, Mrs. G.R. Theilen, of Preston Hollow, Albany county, N.Y. with whom he had been living since the death of her mother, Mr. Hollenbeck's first wife. According to Mrs. Theilen's letter, Mr. Hollenbeck had been in good physical health up to the last year of his life. His mind was good to the last hour of his life. He was 88 years old.
Mr. Hollenbeck came to Rossville when in his early 30's and lived here for about 40 years. He had divorced his first wife in New York before coming here. Two children were born to this union, a son and daughter. The son Wilsie, afterward came to Rossville and lost his life in a tragic brawl in a local saloon where he was shot to death by a negro.
Mr. Hollenbeck married Mrs. Margaret Stephenson here. A time after her death his first wife plead for his return to her in New York, and about 9 1/2 years ago he went back.
Mr. Hollenbeck was highly respected here, being scrupulously honest and a good citizen. He conducted a wagon woodworking shop for many years.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 1, and his body interred in the cemetery at Preston Hollow. |

Mrs. Margaret Hollenbeck died last Saturday morning at 2:00 o'clock after an illness of several months duration. Mrs. Hollenbeck's death was due primarily to a general breaking down of her constitution, brought on my stomach trouble. During the past month she has hardly eaten anything and the manner in which she held on was little less than marvelous. Mrs. Hollenbeck was one of the earliest settlers of this county coming here when but a small girl with her parents and located near old Indianola and from there she went to Vermillion, Kan., where she stayed several years. About 22 years go she moved to Rossville where she has since resided.
Margaret View [sic Margarett Vieux] was born on March 15, 1837 at Council Bluff, Iowa. At the age of eight years she came to Kansas with her parents. She was married three times her first husband being John Young. To this union four children were born, two of whom remain to mourn her death, Mrs. Abe LaFrombois, of Silver Lake, and Mrs. Kate View, of Topeka. Years after the death of her first husband she was united in marriage with Lew Stephens. He died in the eighties. On Dec. 6, 1894 she was united in marriage with L.J. Hollenbeck of this city. Mrs. Hollenbeck is survived by her husband, L.J. Hollenbeck, two daughters, Mrs. LaFrombois and Mrs. View and three sisters, Mrs. Madeline Nadeau, Mrs. Sophie Johnson, of Shawnee, Okla. and Mrs. Rachael Thurber, of Rossville.
The funeral was held Sunday from the Catholic church, conducted by Father Hill and interment was made in the Rossville cemetery. |

 | Obituary- Holm, Nicole Nicole “Nikki” Garretson Holm passed away June 14, 2021; wife, daughter, sister, and loyal friend. Nicole was born May 3, 1990, in Topeka to two loving parents, Brian and Cathy Garretson. Nicole was her dad’s girl and is preceded in death by her loving father, David Brian Garretson.
Nicole was united in marriage to Jeremy Holm on June 28, 2014, he survives. Other survivors include her mother, Cathy Garretson (Michael Plumberg); three sisters, Cassie Garretson-Dunkel (Greg) of Los Angeles, CA and Natalie Garretson, also of Los Angeles. Michelle Bregel (Matt) of De Soto, KS; brother, Steve Manfield of Overland Park, KS; aunts, uncles and many cousins who loved her so much. Nicole is also survived by her loving husband Jeremy Holm of Topeka; his parents, Ed and Linda Holm of Topeka; his brother, Kristoffer and Katie Holm and their children Milo and Zoey of Topeka.
Nicole was a member of Westside Christian Church and attended Rossville Christian Church growing up. Nicole enjoyed music, was a Master Archer, she enjoyed snow skiing and working on wood projects with her father while growing up. She had great wood working skills and loved the outdoors. Nicole would light up any room she entered. To have known Nicole was to love her. She had an infectious smile, kind heart, bubbly personality, and she was truly beautiful inside and out.

The family lived in Emmett where the children attended school prior to 1971.
Ruth was married to Robert L. Holman April 25, 1920, at Bevier, Mo. He died in 1966.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Wilmoth Williams, Topeka, and Mrs. Arlene Hazlett, Hood River, Ore.; a son, Bob Holman, Sacramento, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He is the last member of the Holmden family which lived just west of Willard in the early days in the old stone farm residence on one of the Adams farms. ROSSVILLE – Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Topeka for Ricky L. Holmes, 41, Rossville, who died Saturday, March 26, 1994, at a Topeka hospital. An autopsy was performed to determine cause of death, but results were unavailable Sunday.
He was born Aug. 26, 1952, in Topeka, the son of Lyman E. and Dorothy W. Mickens Holmes, attended schools in Highland Park and was graduated from Topeka Highland Park High School in 1970. He attended vocational-technical school in Topeka. He was a maintenance mechanic for a Payless Shoe store in Topeka 18 years.
He was preceded in death by a son, Travis Holmes.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy Holmes, at home; a son, Todd A. Holmes, Silver Lake; two stepsons, Mike Bloomer and Bryan Bloomer, both in Rossville; a stepdaughter, Aliesha Bloomer, Rossville; and a grandmother, Hazel McCullough, Topeka.

He was born March 29, 1976, in Topeka, the son of Ricky L. and Janet Holmes. He attended Silver Lake High School where he was an honor roll student and had earned National honors in mathematics. He also was on the Yearbook staff and was active in football and wrestling.

She was born February 11, 1903, at Delia, the daughter of Robert and Almena Redmon Keller.

Helen Caroline Holt, 86, of Topeka, passed away on August 25, 2022 at Midland Care.
She was born on July 16, 1936 to Edward and Viola (Schwanke) Schlodder in Delia, Kansas.
Helen attended Topeka High School and graduated in 1954. She worked for Hallmark Card and Seymour Foods Inc. and the Caper Foundation. Helen then worked as a manager for the USD 501 school district in the food service department for 28 years before retiring.
On June 29, 1958, she married John A. Holt in Topeka, Kansas. Together they had 3 children.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Topeka. Helen was very involved within the Topeka community, helping as a Girl Scout troop leader, Cub Scout den mom, and many activities with her church. She loved to sew, crafting, ceramics, and gardening. She was known for her blankets and quilts for the nursing home and especially the doll clothing she made for her family.
Helen is survived by her loving children Charles E. (Colette) Holt, David (Janell) Holt, and Carolyn (Craig) Schiefelbein; sister, Wilma Keim; Grandchildren, Jenny (Brian) Winchell, C.J. (Cheyenne Pitmon) Holt, Elizabeth (Robert) Calvo, Rachel Schiefelbein, and Cody Holt; Great Grandchildren, Karmyn, Landyn, Ava, Logan, Nate, Lucas, Jacob, Anthony, and one on the way.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Holt; her father, Edward Andy Schlodder, mother, Viola Daisy Schlodder, and step father, Fred Koci.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 1, 2022, 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Parker-Price Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, Topeka, Kansas.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 2, 2022, 10:00 am at the Mount Hope Cemetery & Funeral Chapel, in Topeka, Kansas.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys for Mrs. Ann G. Holz, 60, St. Marys, who was found dead Saturday afternoon, November 8, 1975, sitting in her car west of Chelsea Drive and W. 33rd Street on Topeka’s far southwest side.
Dr. W. W. Scamman, deputy district coroner who performed an autopsy Sunday, said she died of a heart ailment.
Police said a card found in the woman’s possession identified her as a diabetic. Authorities said she also had a heart ailment. They said medication also was found in her possession.
Police said the body was discovered by Scott Young, 14, 5330 W. 31st, while he was riding a motorcycle along the road.
She was born June 25, 1915 at Junction City where she spent her childhood. She lived in the Rossville and St. Marys communities since 1949.
She formerly worked for the telephone company at Rossville, St. Marys and Silver Lake, and was head operator at St. Marys from 1951 to 1959. She later was a cook at St. Marys College and St. Marys Manor.
Mrs. Holz, the former Ann Cullen, was married to William Holz March 25, 1949, at Holton. He died October 6, 1975.
A daughter, Mrs. Melissa Champion, 3366 Mayo, Topeka, survives.
Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. Casket bearers are Jerry Perry, Andy Dietz and Greg Daniels, all of Topeka; David Stadler, Rossville; Archie Allen, Eskridge; and Paul Holz, St. Marys.

She was born September 25, 1920, in Topeka, the daughter of David and Mary Whitly Hawkins.
She grew up in the Topeka, Lyndon and Osage City communities. She was graduated from Osage City High School in 1938. Gladys and her first husband, Francis Miles, owned and operated the Hotel Café in Osage City. She later worked at Shawgo’s Clothing and Jack Anderson’s Shoe Store, both in Osage City. She had worked for Josten’s American Yearbook in Topeka for 15 years before she retired.
Gladys was a member of the Osage City United Methodist Church, and of the Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion Auxiliary at Rossville.
She married Francis Miles January 29, 1940, at Osage City. He died in 1979. She married Wilmont F. “Bill” Holz August 12, 1987, at Miami, OK. He died June 22, 1999. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jerry Miles in 1994, and a grandson, Marc Smitha, in 1985.
Surviving her are a son, Bill Miles, Burlington; a daughter, Linda Smitha, Manhattan; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Monday at Piper Funeral Chapel in Rossville. Inurnment was at 3:00 Monday in the Osage [missing rest]

She owned and operated the Hotel Cate in Osage City with her first husband, Francis Miles. She later worked at Shawgo’s Clothing and Jack Anderson’s Shoe Store, both in Osage City. She also had worked for Jostens American Yearbook in Topeka for 15 years before retiring.
She was born Sept. 25, 1920, in Topeka, the daughter of David and Mary Whitly Hawkins.
She grew up in Topeka, Lyndon and Osage City and graduated from Osage City High School In 1938.
Mrs. Holz was a member of the Osage City United Methodist Church, Osage City, arid the Jimmie Lillard American Legion Post No. 31 Auxiliary, Rossville.
She married Francis Miles on Jan. 29, 1940, at Osage City. He died in 1979. She married Wilmont F. ‘'Bill" Holz on Aug. 12, 1987, at Miami, Okla. He died June 22, 1999. She also was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Miles, in 1994, and a grandson, Marc Smitha, in 1985.
Survivors include a son, Bill Miles, Burlington; a daughter, Linda Smitha, Manhattan; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Piper Funeral Chapel, Rossville. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the Osage City Cemetery.
