Freak Accident Claims Life of 10-Year-Old

Troy L. Johnson, 10-year-old son of Rossville High School principal John Johnson, died at a Topeka hospital Saturday, November 21, 1987, after wind blew a set of portable bleachers on top of him at the high school.

Detective Mark Wanamaker of the Shawnee County Sheriff’s office, said Troy suf¬fered crushing head injuries when he was struck by the aluminum bleachers. An autopsy was performed Sunday, revealing that the youngster died of massive head trauma and brain injury, according to Dr. Roman Hiszczynskyj, deputy district coroner.

The accident occurred about 4 p.m. Saturday, when Principal Johnson and another man were measuring the set of bleachers near the high school’s football field, east of the school building. The men were trying to determine whether the bleachers could fit through a door into the high school. The bleachers had been used for the state playoff football game Friday night, and were being considered for use inside the building in the event an overflow crowd attended the evening performance of “The
Sound of Music.”

The bleachers had been set on its wheels, when a strong gust of wind blew them down, striking the boy.

Troy was transported by Medevac MidAmerica Ambulance to Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. USD 321 Superintendent George Brown and Athletic Director Jerry Bingham accompanied Mr. Johnson to the hospital with his son.

Troy had been living with his mother in Salina.

His obituary is on page 2 of this issue.

Boy struck, killed by falling bleachers
By TIM HRENCHIR
Capital-Journal staff writer
The 10-year-old son of Rossville High School’s principal died at a Topeka hospital Saturday after wind blew a set of portable bleachers on top of him at the high school, Shawnee County sheriff’s authorities said.

Detective Mark Wanamaker said the boy, Troy L. Johnson, suffered crushing head injuries when he was struck by the aluminum bleachers. Dr. Roman Hiszczynskyj, deputy district coroner, was scheduled to perform an autopsy today.

Wanamaker said the accident oc-curred at about 4 p.m. Saturday when John Johnson, the principal, was measuring the set of bleachers with another man near the high school’s football field, east of the school building. The two men were trying to determine whether the bleachers could fit through a door into the high school, Wanamaker said.

The bleachers had been used for a state playoff football game that Rossville played Friday, and they were being considered for use inside the school in anticipation of an overflow crowd for a Saturday evening performance of "The Sound of Music.’’

wheels, Wanamaker said, when a strong gust of wind blew the bleachers down, striking the boy.

"At one point in time, he (Troy Johnson) wasn’t anywhere near them,” Wanamaker said. "Apparently when they weren’t looking, he had gotten in behind them.”

Troy Johnson was transported by
Medevac MidAmerica Ambulance to Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Wanamaker said the boy had been living with his mother, who he said is divorced from John Johnson. He still did not know late Saturday where the boy lived and went to school.

However, Rossville residents said the boy lived and attended school at Delia.

Funeral arrangements for the boy will not be made until today’s autopsy has been completed, Hiszczynskyj said.

Obituary- Jones, Eleanor 1
Full transcription here:
Eleanor Illston Jones, 93, of Worthington, Ohio died August 21, 2018. She was born in Ithaca, New York on November 6, 1924, the daughter of the late Cady P. Illston and Laura Buck Illston. She is survived by three sons: David (Joyce) Jones of Columbus, Matt Jones and Peter (Jenny) Jones of Worthington; two daughters: Annie (Adrian) Bennett of Columbus and Amy Jones of Arlington, VA; and by a large extended family. She was preceded in death by her son Evan Jones of Worthington.
She was proud of her professional accomplishments. At the Harding Hospital and the Harding-Evans Foundation she worked to educate the community about mental illness, enhance the hospital’s relationship with the community and raise funds to build multiple buildings on the Harding campus. She was a Fellow of the National Association for Hospital Development, member of the Ohio Association for Hospital Development and served on the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce.
Her volunteer contributions to the community were many. She founded and was first president of Tele-Mom, a support organization for mothers; was instrumental in the development of the Worthington Martin Luther King celebration and was a member and chair of the Worthington Community Relations Commission. Her far ranging interests included a love of cars. A long-time member of the Sports Car Club of America, she reveled in attending and working the races at Mid Ohio. Her many contributions to the community were recognized with a tree planted in her honor on the Worthington Green.
The church has always been an important part of her life. She grew up in the church in Ithaca and while living in Kansas for 16 years, she partnered with her husband to nurture a small church in Rossville, KS. And she loved the Worthington Church –worshiping there, seeing it grow over time, serving as a Stephen Minister, serving on many committees, and working in the office. The music program gave her enormous pleasure and renewal.
But she said her most important and rewarding roles were in the family. She was a Mom to six, and proudly had nine grandchildren (Ruth, Paul, Amy, Adam, Katherine, Michael, Matthew, Regan and Kirsten), nine great grandchildren (Sarah, Rebecca, Chance, Andrew, Allisin, Tyler, Sydney, Isabella and Josey) and two great-great grandchildren (Henry and Oliver). Her joy was hosting and cooking for large family gatherings and being surrounded by the generations.
In addition to the official clan, “family” included many others. Adults and children alike knew that Franklin Court was a “safe house” where respite could be had and where a dose of comfort or tough love would be dispensed as needed.
She shared her wisdom freely, but gently. Posted on her refrigerator were her Four Steps to a Good Life:
• Pay attention
• Count your blessings
• Be responsible for the space you take up
• Do something for others
Like everyone, she had losses and disappointments. When she reflected on those hard times she often quoted two sources that gave her strength and perspective. For strength she looked to her faith and often quoted Phillipians “…for I have learned, in whatever state I am, therewith to be content … I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
For perspective she looked to Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. She often described her life in the same way Dorothy described Oz upon her return: “Some of it was not very nice, but most of it was beautiful.” Hers was a beautiful life.
Services will be held at the Worthington United Methodist Church, 600 High Street in Worthington on Monday, August 27 at 2:00 pm. Opportunities to visit with the family at the church will be from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, August 26 and one hour preceding the Monday service.
For those who would like to do so, the family suggests donations in her name to the Worthington United Methodist Church, The Cornell Lab of Ornithology (Ithaca, NY) or a charity that has meaning for the giver.

Eleanor's husband, Don Jones, was pastor of the Rossville Methodist Church for 16 years and several of their children graduated from RHS.

Laura Jones
May 18, 1934 — August 28, 2020
Laura Ann Hudson was born in Brazil, Indiana in 1934, to Cecelia Adele (Sterner), wife of John Hudson, a grocer. When she was three years old, in the aftermath of the Great Depression, her parents, two older sisters and brother (Margaret, Betty, and Bob) packed up and drove south to Florida, where she spent the rest of her youth.

In 1956, Mom met her “Luvy” - Jimmy Jones, a pilot in the US Navy - and they began their adventurous married life together the next year.

In the course of that life, they brought 8 children into the world - seven daughters followed by a son - and together, they eventually saw the ranks of their family swell to 131, including children, grandchildren, great grand children, and a great great grandchild. They saw their children’s children to the fourth generation, as their nuptial blessing promised. Her family was Mom’s greatest source of material happiness and pride in this life.

There were two driving forces in Mom’s life - her Faith and her Family.

She was a devoted Catholic. As they moved around the country - 29 household moves - they actively sought Catholic schools for their children. In California, when one couldn’t be had, they co-founded a private school (Holy Innocents), which thrived for many years. The ties they formed there were strong and Mom always remembered fondly - and frequently spoke of - her good friends from that era of their life.

Eventually, in the 1980’s, they sent their youngest children to St. Mary’s Academy & College. They finally moved here to retire in 1995.

Obituary- Jones, Laura 2
Mom loved Kansas and St. Marys like no place she ever lived (and she lived in some pretty fabulous places!). Every time she left her house, she commented on the beauty of Kansas. The trees, the sky, the sunsets, the green hills or the fallow fields - every natural aspect of the Kansas she saw was delightful to her. And when she spoke to anyone who didn’t live in St. Marys, she tried to convince them why they should. Rarely a day went by that she didn’t say, “There’s no place like St. Marys.”

To all, Mom was known as a fun, hospitable woman who loved to laugh. She entertained frequently at her Round Table in her little kitchen, where anyone could always find a little rest and respite.

To her family, she was Luvy, mom, grandma, great grandma - always available for a conversation, advice, encouragement, and, if necessary, a little “setting straight.” She was the greatest fan of each of her grandkids. She always saw the good in each of them and doted on them, whether they lived close by or far away.

As a very determined lady, Mom was certain of many things. She was a woman who didn’t compromise her beliefs.

She had two favorite sayings: “Everything happens for the best,” and “This, too, shall pass.” They summarize her simple faith and her perpetual optimism. She firmly believed that God was always in control, the He will work good out of any situation no matter how bad, and that even the worst things would eventually pass.

And, as always, she was right!

This point was proven Friday, August 28, 2020, when she passed into eternity. After suffering severely for six weeks, she died calmly and at peace with family at her side, a priest present to bless her on her way, and a Rosary in her hand. What could be better?

There really is no place like St. Marys!

Obituary- Kagay, Stephen 1
Stephen Kagay
October 21, 1953 — September 10, 2021
Stephen Dennis Kagay passed away peacefully early on Friday, September 10. He was nearly 68 years old. He had been diagnosed with liver cancer earlier this year. He fought bravely for six months before succumbing to the illness. He died as he had lived, surrounded by members of his loving family.

Steve was born in 1953 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Don Kagay and Ida née Davis. He displayed tremendous work ethic from an early age, maintaining a paper route for many years and winning awards in the process. He excelled in school, where he also played baseball.

He graduated high school with honors at the age of 17. He enrolled in UMKC, where he met the love of his life Virginia (Ginger) née Madrid. They married in 1973. Steve graduated with a degree in Microbiology in 1976.

He spent a successful 25-year career in the pharmaceutical industry. During this time, he was recognized for his outstanding performance six times, and won national awards twice. He was a noted expert in his field for his knowledge, management skills and business sense. After retiring from this industry, he worked for a tactical gear distributor for a few years before starting a business as a handyman.

He loved his family, friends, and everyone else. He was a stranger to none and a friend to all. He always had a smile ready and loved making people laugh (or groan) with his arsenal of dad jokes. To know him was to love him.

When he wasn't spending time with family and friends, he often spent time in the service of others. He especially enjoyed serving the Church and was passionate about his Catholic faith and his profound love of God.

Steve is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ginger. Together they had eight sons and a daughter: Anthony (Andrea), Chris (Monica), Pete, Mike (Hannah), Mary, Louie, Jamie (Marcie), Tom and Joe. Steve is also survived by two sisters, Susie (Rick) Thornton and Debbie (Steve) Punzo, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
