Obituary- Miller, Ada 1
Obituary- Miller, Ada 1
Miller
We have come this morning to remember the life of Ada Miller who gave her spirit up to the Lord this past Saturday, April 14.

Ada was one of two children born to Frank and Sallie McAllister McKeever on April 13, 1905, at Soldier. She grew up and attended schools there.

Ada was united in marriage with Roy C. Miller in Holton on November 24, 1937. One daughter was born to them. Roy preceded her in death on December 22, 1972.

Prior to marriage, Ada taught school in Jackson and Brown Counties on the Fox and Sac Indian Reservations for 14 years. Then she moved with her husband to Delia. They came to live in the Holton community in 1962 after his retirement from the US Postal Service.

Ada was active in the Crusaders Class of Evangel United Methodist Church where she was a member. In recent years, she had served on the Congregation's Pastor-Parish Relations Committee.

Her passing will be deeply felt by her daughter, Sharon Miller of Columbus, Georgia; a step-daughter, Mrs. Maxine Trimble and her husband, Herbert, of Point Lookout, Missouri; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Davis of Goff; a niece, Virginia Elliott and her husband, Don, of Netawaka, as well as other relatives, former students and dear friends in the church and community including Joan Wheatley of Holton.

As we pause in these moments to remember her life together, let us give thanks to God for her many days among us. She was a courageous woman of faith who, though she suffered much, complained little and proceeded to win battle after battle with one severe illness after another. She knew the miracle of God’s healing and comforting presence again and again, yet seldom experienced wellness for over 30 years. Transcending her physical condition, she invested herself in others through ceramics, her cooking and rose garden. She especially enjoyed travel with church groups and her family.

May God bless us with her zest for life, her courage of faith and spirit of adventure. May we, too, experience the comfort of God’s presence and the healing of His loving kindness as she did. And may the benediction of His peace sustain and strangthen us through the storms of life even as He has lifted her to highest heaven. So be it. Amen.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, from The Mercer Funeral Home with the Rev. John Richter officiating. Burial was in the Holton Cemetery. Music was furnished by Keith Gilliland who sang “How Great Thou Art” and “In The Garden” and was accompanied by Mrs. Dolores Wright.

Casketbearers were Terry Smith, Raymond Harshaw, Rodney Miller, Devere Miller, Lloyd Miller and Kenneth McKeever.

Obituary- Miller, Elizabeth
Obituary- Miller, Elizabeth
Elizabeth Joan “Betty” (Pendleton) Miller, age 79 of Rossville, passed away on May 23, 2018. She was born on June 5, 1938 in St. Joseph, MO; the daughter of W. Warren and Naomi E. Pendleton.

Elizabeth attended Willard Grade School and graduated from Rossville High School in 1956. She earned her RN diploma from Stormont Vail School of Nursing in 1958 and spent a few years working as an RN at the VA Hospital in Topeka.

Elizabeth married her high school sweetheart, Donald “Don” Miller on March 1, 1958. In 1962, Elizabeth was called to work from home raising her children and helping Don grow the family farm. Elizabeth and Don enjoyed 60 years of marriage, through the ups and downs of raising children and building the family farm.

Elizabeth’s life was dedicated to others, her family, community, church family, 4-H club, school board, friends and animals. She volunteered as a lector and Catechism teacher at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, was a Rossville Rustlers 4-H Club Leader for over 25 years, served on the USD 321 school board for multiple terms, and as a wrestling cheerleading sponsor (just to name a few). She rarely (if ever) said no to anyone who asked for her assistance. In addition to raising 6 children, she raised countless sick calves, horses, kittens, puppies, turtles, baby birds, gerbils, deer and even an iguana. She hated to see any living animal suffer and would work tirelessly to ensure its comfort.

Elizabeth is perhaps best known in the Rossville area for her enthusiastic support of athletics in the community. Her voice and cowbell could be heard above everything else (much to her children’s dismay) at the countless sporting events she attended. She loved to attend all Rossville sporting events, even if she had no children or grandchildren cheer on.

Elizabeth’s children remember her as a strong, caring, outspoken, intelligent, independent and hard-working woman. She was the pillar of strength of her family and will be sorely missed by her children, grand-children and great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her son, David Miller.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Miller, of the home; 4 daughters – LuAnn Baumchen and husband Paul (Lawrence), Diana Iseman and husband Jim (Burlington), Suzanne Tull and husband Ronnie (Willard) , Sarah Meinershagen and husband Kevan (Lawrence); 1 son – Daniel Miller and wife Jennifer (Willard) ; a daughter-in-law – Noel Miller (Dover); as well as 13 Grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth wished for private burial at the family farm. Therefore, a private graveside service will be held for immediate family members only. Other family and friends are encouraged to attend her funeral mass on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at St Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville, and stay for a luncheon in Dekat Hall afterwards. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Elizabeth “Betty” Miller Participation Scholarship Fund and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, Kansas 66536. Obituary- Miller, Henry H. 1
Obituary- Miller, Henry H. 1
Dr. Miller At Rest – Death claimed Dr. H. H. Miller last Monday morning at 5:20 a.m. and in his death there passes another link which unites Rossville with the past.

For forty-four years with the exception of the past year and one year spent in Horton, Kansas, Dr. Miller had practiced medicine in this city.
When not yet 22 years of age, Dr. Miller came to Kansas in April 1872 and in June located in Rossville and made his first professional call on June 25. From that time his services were in constant demand; in all sorts of weather and all hours of the day or night, he traveled over the hills for miles in every direction. In his early days here Dr. Miller made thousands of calls on horseback going across country as roads were few and often impassable. Dr. Miller never thought of his own comfort if some other had need of his services. These early days of hard work and exposure may have made easier the inroads of the disease which finally ended his life. He lacked three days of being 66 years old at the time of his death.

Dr. Miller’s health has not been good for several years and for about a year he had not been actively identified with his practice. A month ago he apparently was much better than any time during the winter but the improvement was only temporary and three weeks ago he began failing rapidly. Death was due to cancer of the pancreas.
