| 5351 |  | Obituary- Eckert, Maxine 2 Eckert Maxine E. Eckert, 86, Holton, for¬merly of Wetmore, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, at a Topeka hospital. She was born Oct. 20, 1922, near Mayetta, the daughter of Arthur and Adelia Busch Kientz. She graduated in 1940 from Mayetta High School. Mrs. Eckert had worked at State Income Tax, Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Merchants National Bank in Topeka. She later worked for First National Bank of Wetmore for 20 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Wetmore and a past worthy matron and a 50-year member of Zenith Chapter 184 of the Order of Eastern Star in Hiawatha. She also was a member of the Amer¬ican Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary in Wetmore. She and her husband Dick were honored as Grand Duke and Duchess of the Spring Creek Festival parade in 2002. She married Art Ray on Aug. 2, 1940. He died Feb. 6, 1947. She mar¬ried Dick Eckert on Aug. 24, 1951. He survives. Other survivors include a son, Rick Eckert and wife Belinda, Delphos; a daughter-in-law, Kellie Ray, Holton; nine grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Dick, on May 11, 1994; and a son, Gary Ray, on Jan. 2, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Interment will be in Wetmore Cemetery. He was born June 9, 1922 in Ar¬rington, the son of Jacob Richard and Helen Littleton Eckert. He graduated from Denison High School in 1940 and attended Washburn University, graduating with an A.B. degree in education. Mr. Eckert was mobilized as a private with the Kansas National Guard in Holton on Dec. 23, 1940. He served with the 11th Airborne Division in the Philippines, Oki¬nawa and Japan. He remained in active duty until February 1946. He was hired to teach and coach at Netawaka High School in September 1949. He coached boys baseball and basketball and girls basketball. His boys basketball teams went to the state tournament in 1959, 1960, and 1962. | |

He was promoted to Colonel on July 15, 1971, and appointed to the posi¬tion of Chief of Staff-Army-For the Adjutant General Kansas Army Na¬tional Guard and served that position for nine years before retiring in De¬cember 1980 with 40 years of active and reserve service. He was inducted into the Infantry Officer Candidate Hall of Fame at Fort Benning, Ga., in May 1992 and the Kansas National Guard Half of Fame in Topeka in November 1991. He was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives 60th District in 1982 and was re-elected in 1984, 1986 and 1988. He married Maxine E. Kientz on Aug. 24, 1951. She died Nov. 15, 2008. He also was preceded by a daughter, Connie Dick, on May 11, 1994; a son, Gary Ray, on Jan. 2, 2000; and a sister, Nellie Freed, on July 8, 2006. He is survived by a son, Rick Eckert and wife Belinda, Delphos; a daughter-in-law, Kellie Ray, Holton; three sisters, Mary Doyle, Holton, Marceline Marinich, Canton, Ill., and Marjorie Sage, Olympia, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great¬grandchildren. She had cancer. She was born October 15, 1938, in Kansas City, Ks. She lived in Rossville and Topeka the past four years. She was married to Marvin Eddins in 1977. He survives. Other survivors include a son, Gary Smith, Rossville; her mother, Mrs. Luella McConnell, Rossville; four brothers, Clifford VanVleck and Charles VanVleck both in Rossville, and Richard VanVleck and Parker VanVleck, both in Wamego; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Thomas and Mrs. Mary Kay Niedfeldt, both in Wamego. Casket bearers were Clifford VanVleck, Charles VanVleck, Richard VanVleck, Parker VanVleck, Ernest Thomas, and Harold Niedfeldt. Burial was in Rossville Cemetery. He retired in 1973. He was an Army veteran of World War I He was born July 10, 1898, in McLouth, the son of William T. and Minnie T. Knight Edmonds. He attended Winchester schools. Mr. Edmonds was a member of the former Edmonds Chapel in McLouth, Winchester Christian Church, where he was chairman of the board for many years, Bethel Community Church in Topeka, the XYZ Club in Silver Lake, the Jay- hawk Barracks and a 50-year mem¬ber of Silver Lake Post No. 160 of the American Legion in Silver Lake. He was married to Leona Housh on March 18, 1922, in Leavenworth. She survives. A granddaugh¬ter preceded him in death. Other survivors include two sons, J. Harlan Edmonds, Topeka, and David Wayne Edmonds, Greenville, S.C.; a sister, Willo Lobb, McLouth, three brothers, Adair Edmonds, Oskaloosa, Kenneth Ed¬monds, Liberty, Mo., and William Edmonds, McLouth; four grandchil¬dren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was born May 1, 1910, at Delia and lived in Junction City for 24 years be¬fore moving to Silver Lake in Septem¬ber 1977. He was a welder for Union Pacific Railroad for 43 years before retiring in 1974. Mr. Edwards was a member of First Baptist Church, Silver Lake, and Union Pacific Oldtimers Club. He was married to Geraldine Queen, on July 27, 1940, at Topeka. She sur¬vives. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Sandra Nakoneczny, 1184 Mulvane; a sisters, Mrs. Vera Smith, Springfield, Mo., and three grandchil¬dren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Davidson-Duff Funeral Home. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery, north of Silver Lake. The funeral was held from the Rossville M.E. Church and was conducted by Rev. Allen, the pastor. Interment took place in the Rossville cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Edwards and two children had been in California for several years and only returned a short time ago. Mr. Edwards was well known in this vicinity having lived here nearly all his life. | |
| 5360 |  | Obituary- Edwards, John JOHN P. EDWARDS John R. Edwards, 81, one of Greenwood County’s most success-ful cattlemen, passed away Nov¬ember 12, 1958, in a Eureka hospi¬tal. He had been in failing health for three years. He was born October 26, 1877, in Iowa City, Iowa, and moved with his parents to Greenwood County when he was seven years old. He was a resident of the county the remainder of his life, his home be¬ing on a farm south of Madison the last 63 years. On February 21, 1909, he married Miss Mary J. Lea of Lucerne, Mo. Besides his wife, survivors in¬clude three daughters, Mrs. Mary E. Worley of Azalea, Ore., Mrs. Stella Hall of Salem, Ore., and Mrs. Betty Anne Wade of Route 8, Tope¬ka; two sons, Tom Edwards of Hamilton, Kansas, and Dale Ed¬wards of Topeka; seven grandchild¬ren; one brother, Dave Edwards of Hamilton, Kansas; and three sisters Mrs. Annie Brown of Payette,, Idaho, Mrs. Lu Lantj of Hamilton, and Mrs. Lillie Lindamood of Eureka. Services were held at the Christ¬ian Church at Madison, Kansas, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Interment was in the Prairie Chappel Cemetery. Mrs. Eggleston was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church and the Eagles Lodge, both at Topeka. She married Vern Eggleston Sept. 7, 1951, at Denver, Colo. He died June 28, 1972. Survivors include three sisters, Ruby Freel and Melba Ziegler, both of Topeka, and Vernadell Macha, Delia; and a brother, Oscar Bixby, Rossville. Ehrhart, 87, St. Marys. She died late Saturday, Feb. 16, at a Topeka hospital. Mrs. Ehrhart was born Feb. 11, 1898, at St. Marys, the daughter of George and Nora Coutcher Schraeder. She lived in St. Marys all her life except from 1939 to 1948, when she lived at St. Paul in Neosho County. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at St. Marys. She was married to Lewis A. Ehrhart Aug. 14, 1916, at St. Marys. He died in 1948. Survivors include two sons, Frank H. Ehrhart, Conroe, Texas, and Ernest Ehrhart, Silver Lake; two brothers, the Rev. Bernard Schraeder, Kansas City, Kan., and Gerald Schraeder, Topeka; a sister, Mrs. Monica Halloran (Tom Halloran's wife), Topeka; nine grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He was born September 17, 1897, at Hoyt, the son of John and Alice Mc¬Ginnis Ehrhart. He moved to Michigan in 1940 and to Flint in 1948. Mr. Ehrhart worked for Kearsley school district at Flint and retired as supervisor of buildings and grounds after 15 years service. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic church and one of the founders of the parish in 1951. He also was an honorary life member of Holy Rosary Men’s Club at the church and member of East Side Senior Citizens and Kear¬sley Old Timers Club, all at Flint. He was married to Mary Elizabeth McNeive, May 19, 1926. She died in 1975. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Jo Ehrhart, Burton, Michigan; two sons, Donald J. Ehrhart, Durand, Michigan, and Robert J. Ehrhart, Guilford, Con¬necticut; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, April 19, at Holy Rosary Catholic church, Flint. She was a life-long resident of the Westmoreland area. Marilyn was born December 6,1943, in Westmoreland, the daughter of Thomas O. Magnett and Alma E. Roggenkamp Magnett. She attended Westmoreland schools. She married Lloyd B. Eichem on December 2, 1963. He preceded her in death on November 19, 1982. Marilyn was a homemaker and enjoyed playing Bingo. Marilyn is survived by her sister, Janice B. Magnett Kolde, and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother Gary Albert Magnett. Graveside Inurnment services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 5, 2013, at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, south of Blaine, Kansas. Reverend Phoebe Pitney will be officiating. Mulanax was born at Holton, on Feb. 9, 1945. She was the daughter of Clayton and Alta (Mulanax) Ray. Arlene was raised by her grandparents, Lewis and Eunice Mulanax. She married Gary Eichorn March 10, 2002, at Lake Wabaunsee. He survives of the home. Other family members include: Daughter Julie Kester, Wichita; step¬son, Gregg Eichorn, McPherson; grandchildren Tyler, Jordan, Mason, Grace, Aiden, Avery Kester and Katelyn Eichorn. There are also cousins and uncles and their families surviving. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents. Arlene was a descendent and member of the Citizen Band, Potawatomi Indians. She graduated from Delia High School, and then attended Washburn University, Topeka. After school she was a legal secretary for law offices in Topeka, then was an administra-tive assistant and personnel manager for PTMW in Meriden and later To¬peka. In 2000, she began work at the Flint Hills Community Health Cen¬ter, Emporia. Funeral services were conducted at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, Saturday, July 5. The service was conducted by Rev. Tom Miller. Cremation followed services. A memorial has been established with SOS of Emporia, with contributions to be sent in care of the funeral home. | |
| 5369 |  | Obituary- Eisenbarth, Blanche Blanche Elizabeth Eisenbarth Holton - Blanche Elizabeth Eisenbarth, 89, of Holton, KS passed away Friday, January 10, 2014 at the Vintage Park Assisted Living in Holton. Blanche was born in Topeka, KS on March 15, 1924, the daughter of Charles James and Elizabeth Katherine (Nissen) Love. She lived most of her life in the Wetmore community. She graduated in 1942 from Wetmore schools. Blanche attended Stewart Beauty Academy in 1946 and opened her own beauty shop in her home in 1957, retiring in 1977. She was a member of the Elizabeth St. Dominic Catholic Church, St. James Catholic Church and the Altar Society, and Wetmore American Legion Auxiliary. Blanche married Louis Barrett, he was killed in WWII; she later married James Henry Eisenbarth on January 15, 1949, and they were married for almost 65 years. He survives. Other survivors include her children, Chuck Eisenbarth (Becky) of Holton, KS, Ed Eisenbarth (Susie) of Circleville, KS and Harold “Mike” Eisenbarth (Virginia) of Topeka, KS; her brother George C. Love and his wife Wanda of Rossville, KS; 6 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Blanche is preceded in death by her brother, Joe Love; grandson, Brian Eisenbarth and great-granddaughter, Katheryn Eisenbarth. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 13, 2014 at St. Dominic Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Wetmore Cemetery. She met Marion Elkins in Rossville, and was married to him in 1948, in Topeka. They raised a family in Kansas prior to moving to Forest Grove, Ore. in 1963. She worked for the Forest Grove Grade School as a cook. After their retirement, she and her husband moved to Tillamook in 1976, where they managed Fisherman’s Park on the Wilson River for many years. She is survived by her husband, Marion (a brother of Helen Thompson and Francis Davis, Rossville, and Joe Davis, St. Marys); two sons, Marion C. Elkins, Cornelius, Ore., and Michael T. Elkins, Alona, Ore.; three daughters, Anna Mae Taylor, Tillamook, Ruby Poteets, and P. Laverne Reding of Horse Shoe Bend, Ark.; a brother, Marvin L. Bivens, Brookfield, Mo.; two sisters, Carrie Frock, Brookfield, Mo. and Edna Ryland, Las Vegas, Nev.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. They were in hard circumstances and along in March of 1908 or 1909 the mother died leaving three young children. Sympathetic people of Rossville assisted the family in every way possible and the children were eventually placed in a children's home. The mother was buried here. These brief details are published to see if there is anyone who could help in locating the grave of the mother at the cemetery. One of the children, a daughter, was here Sunday seeking information. He was born February 15, 1929 at Soldier, the son of Roy J. and Dorothy C. Mallam Ellis. Dean grew up in the Soldier, Manhattan and St. Marys communities. He attended St. Marys High School. Dean served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Dean was a truck driver for Kincaid Truck Line in St. Marys. He owned and operated the B&B Café, Mr. D’s and D&W Snack Bar all in St. Marys. He managed the Nickerson Farm’s at Paxico. He was a district manager for Highway Oil. Dean cooked at Puffy’s in Maple Hill and the St. Marys Sale Barn. He was a member of the St. Marys Bible Baptist Church, and was a member of the Maple Hill Senior Center. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Ronald K. Ellis. On July 25, 1959 he was united in marriage to Winnie L. Richards. She survives of the home. Other survivors include two sons, Larry D. (Ellen) Ellis, Springfield, MO, and Steven W. Ellis, Delia; a daughter, Lynette L. (She depart¬ed this life November 4, 1938, at the age of 92 years, 9 months and 17 days, exactly 52 years to the hour after the death of her husband. She was married to John Wesley Ellis in 1868 after his return from the Civil War. They came to Kansas and settled on a farm north of Kiro After his death in 1892, Mrs. Ellis moved to Topeka, 600 West 8th St. and lived at that location 46 years, where she died. Three daughters, Mrs. Lillie Wilt, of Rossville; Mrs. Ethel Barron, of Tucson, Arizona, and Mrs. Luda Ross of the home survive. Also four grandchildren, Mrs. Homer S. Reid, Rossville; Miss Ruby Alice Wilt of Golden, Colo, Miss Barbara Barron and Miss Frances Barron of Tucson, Ariz., and a great grandson, Robert Reid of Rossville. A son, Dumas, preceded the father in death. Funeral services were held at 3:30 Monday, November 7, at the Wall- Diffenderfer mortuary. Burial was in the Prairie Home cemetery. | |

Ellis, who left hero a year ago in January after living hero for a year and practising dentistry, died Sunday morning March 11, at 11 a.m. in a hospital in Hutchinson where he had been for about a month. The news came in a letter to Mrs. H.E. Ishmael, but the cause of his death was not stated. Since leaving here Mrs. Ellis had been making her home with a sister at White Oaks, New Mex., and Dr. Ellis has been living first at Independence, Kansas, and later at Hutchinson. Mrs. Ellis reached his bedside late the evening before the Doctor’s death. For nearly thirty years Dr. Ellis worked in the government printing office in Washington, and just before coming to Rossville, for several years with the Capper publications in Topeka. | |

While living in Richardson, TX, she worked in the lunchroom at the local school. Winnie had been an Avon representative and a Stanley/Fuller Brush Agent. She was a member of the St. Marys Bible Baptist Church and the Maple Hill Senior Center. On July 25, 1956, Winnie was united in marriage to Marvin Dean Ellis at St. Marys. He preceded her in death on March 15, 2019. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters Paula and LaDorna. Survivors include two sons, Larry D. (Ellen) Ellis, Springfield, MO, and Steven W. Ellis, Delia; her daughter, Lynette L. He died late Saturday, Jan. 12, 1985, at a Topeka hospital. He was a cook in the diet kitchen at the Topeka Veterans Administration Hospital 28 years before he retired. Mr. Allen was born Dec. 9, 1911, at St. Marys, the son of Oscar and Mathilda Danielson Allen. He was a lifelong St. Marys resident and served in the Army during World War II. He died late Saturday, Jan. 12, at a Topeka hospital. He was a cook in the diet kitchen at the Topeka Veterans Administra-tion Hospital 28 years before he re-tired. Mr. Allen was born Dec. 9, 1911, at St. Marys, the son Of Oscar and Mathilda Danielson Allen. He was a lifelong St. Marys resident and served in the Army during World War II. Miss Mary Funderburg, was born in Hardin County, Tennessee, and was married at the age of 19 at Nashville. She became a resident of Kansas in 1876. Twelve children have been born to her, of which 9 are now living. Mrs. Emerson has been an active member of the M.E. Church for over 54 years and died an exemplary Christian. Funeral services were held in the M.E. Church at this place at 3 o'clock last Sat. afternoon, conducted by Rev. Webb, after which the remains were followed to their last resting place and the last sad rites were said in the presence of endearing friends and heartbroken relatives. | |

His cheerful face will greet us no more from the little store room door, and never again will his pleasant salutations fall upon our ear. His sorrowing widow is alone there now, except for her son and family kindly attend to her wants, and tenderly comfort her in her solitude. We have all noticed the evident decline of the good old man, his face grew pale, his form more bent, and his step more tottering as cold weather came on, and the winter's chill caused him to wrap his shawl close about him and grasp his cane more firmly, yet we failed to realize that his days were numbered, and last Friday morning at six o'clock when Mr. W. Emerson quietly breathed his last, but comparatively few had missed him from his customary daily walk. The news surprised and pained all. It seemed but yesterday that he sat upon the post office steps and watched the building of his little store on Main St., built by his son, and the satisfaction with which the grateful hearted old gentleman and his wife moved in and settled down contented and happy "for life." Then how from the steps of his new home he had with deep interest watched the progress of the new Masonic Hall, and the growth of the town. Quiet, inoffensive, strictly upright, kind hearted -- we know there is not one but will breathe a sigh of sad regret and tender memories over the news of his death. We learn that he was about 68 years of age -- has traveled extensively in his life time and has raised a family of eleven sons, ten of whom are now alive and prospering in different part of the country. He was readmitted to a Topeka hospital last January 22 after he suffered a broken left hip in a fall and later was released. He was born July 28, 1894, at Rossville and spent most of his life in the Rossville and St. Marys communities. He was graduated from St. Marys College at St. Marys in 1916. While he was a student at the college, Mr. Emert was a pitcher on the St. Marys College Baseball Team. He was approached by a scout for the Chicago White Sox professional ball team but declined to accept the position. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Rossville. He was a farmer before he retired. He was married to Florentine Stockman November 14, 1917, at St. Marys. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Winifred McClain, Rossville, and Mrs. Joan Siegert, Garland, Tex.; a sister, Mrs. Edna Pearl, St. Marys, and four grandchildren. | 5397 |  | Obituary- Emert, Lydia Mrs. Lydia Emert Mrs. Lydia Jane Emert, widow of the late T.H. Emert passed away at the family home on Navarre and Pottawatomie streets, Thursday evening, January 3, at the age of 67 years 2 months and 21 days. The death of Mrs. Emert was a great shock to a great many friends in Rossville and community who did not know of her recent illness. While Mrs. Emert had been in poor health only a short time her critical condition had been known to the family since an examination made at a Topeka hospital some time ago. Mrs. Emert was numbered among the rapidly diminishing early day settlers of this section of Shawnee county. She came to this state in the late 60’s with her parents from her birthplace near Pennsboro, West Virginia, where she was born October 12, 1861. Her parents came to North Topeka when she was 7 years of age and nine years later when she was 16 years old they removed to the vicinity of Rossville. Since that time 60 years she had been a resident in the state. The major portion of her life had been spent on the home farm west of Rossville. The last few years had been spent in Rossville. She was married to Timothy H. Emert on February 15, 1883 at St. Marys, Kansas. To this union three children were born, all of whom survive. They are Ethelyn Ferguson of the home address, Edna Pearl and Clarnece Emert of this community. She is also survived by one brother, Morris Bond, of this city and four grandchildren. Mrs. Emert united with the Methodist church January 29, 1928, and the funeral service was conducted by her pastor, Rev. Gordon S. Pritchett at the home Sunday, January 6, at 2:30 o’clock. Music was furnished by the following singers: Messrs. J. D. Fink and Walter Cormack, Mrs. A. B. Jamieson and Mrs. Albert Reser. Miss Edith Higginbotham accompanied at the piano. The songs were, “Some Sweet Day Bye and Bye”, “Voices from Glory”, and “After All Eternity”. The pallbearers were Messrs. Harvey James, Sherman James, J. W. Reid, Fred Mason, John Kesler and W. V. Hook. Burial was in the family lot in the Rossville cemetery. He was born December 8,1955 in Topeka, the son of Michael Leroy and Treva (Walker) Emery. Rory graduated from Highland Park High School. Rory was employed by Westar Energy for the past 35 years. Rory married Tracy Greenlee on August 28,1992 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She survives. Engberg, 58 years old, 4937 South Benton, night janitor foreman at the Star, died unexpect¬edly of heart disease shortly before midnight last night (Friday), while at work. He had been in failing health the last year. A former po¬lice sergeant, Mr. Engberg had been employed by The Star the last nine years. He was the son of the late John A. Engberg, a cabinet maker, land had lived in Kansas City all his life. He was a machinist for the Chicago-Great Western railroad be¬fore becoming a member of the po¬lice department 30 years ago. He returned to railroad work and later went back to the police department serving the nine years prior to 1932. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Shrine. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Emma L. Engberg of the home, who is visiting in Altadena, Calif.; a son, John W. Eng¬berg, 5018 Walrond avenue; a step¬son, Fred A. Stewart of Topeka; a step-daughter, Mrs. I.B. James, Altadena; a sister, Mrs. Edith Lowe, 4109 Flora avenue, and seven grand¬children. Mrs. Engberg’s first husband was George Stewart, deceased and her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Aye of Rossville. |
