Obituary- Engle, Gloria
Obituary- Engle, Gloria
Gloria Priscilla Williams Engle
Gloria was born on November 5th, 1925 in Cape Charles, Virginia to Nelson and Eva Coates Williams. Due to the handwritten nature of birth certificates of the era it was later discovered that her birthdate was actually November 6,1925 and as of 1980, both days were celebrated as her birthday.

In 1948, Gloria married the love of her life, Harry Bell Engle. They lived in the Stoneybrook development of the Denbigh area in Newport News, Virginia for their entire married life. Gloria was the manager of the Stoneybrook pool for many years and was an assistant swimming coach for her daughter’s team. She also served on the Stoneybrook Women’s club where she hosted many dinners for foreign dignitaries from the Fort Eustis Army base. She and Harry had two children, William Engle who died in infancy and Susan Engle who preceded her in death.

Gloria enjoyed playing cards with friends and was a Life Master at Bridge. She enjoyed cooking and crossword puzzles and was a dedicated Bingo player.

Gloria developed Alzheimers and lived the last ten years of her life at the Rossville Health and Rehab Facility in Rossville, Kansas.

Obituary- Enochs, Lou
Obituary- Enochs, Lou
The entire community was thrown into mourning Tuesday night by the drowning of one of our favorite boys Lou Enochs, in the Kaw river. Lou, with four other young men had gone in swimming. He was a good swimmer; but it is thought he must have taken cramps when he entered the cold current. Frantic efforts were made by the other boys to save him, but to no avail. Searchers worked constantly to recover the body, but it was not discovered until about mid-forenoon Thursday. Shellabarger took charge of the body to prepare for burial at 4 p. m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held later. Obituary will be published next week.

[Note: we searched the following two weeks’ papers, and no obituary was published.]

Obituary- Enos, Margaret
Obituary- Enos, Margaret
MARGARET ENOS
Margaret Evans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Evans, was born Nov¬ember 22, 1850 in Oneida County, N.Y. She was one of 11 children, all of whom with the parents are now de¬ceased. She was of Welch descent, both her father and mother were born in Wales, and this gave her a good heritage from a strong devout ancestry.
She was united in marriage with Pascal Enos at Topeka, in 1876 and after a happy family life of ten years, Mr. Enos passed away leaving her with two little children, Zimria Enos of Perry, Kansas and Pascal Enos, Jr., of Oklahoma City. She met the struggle in those pioneer days with her little family in such a successful way, meeting the hard¬ships and difficulties and surmount¬ing them, using the best that she had for the battle of life. The boys were present in her last days and when she passed away.
She was a college graduate of some institution in New York and had taught school for ten years prior to her marriage and after the death of Mr. Enos she went back again into the school room at Kingsville for a period of two years where she had taught. She was a successful mother, not only to her own boys but gave at least three girls a good chance in life, Dora James, Mrs. Nettie Startup McKoun, Wichita, Ks., and Mrs. Zena Loveland of To¬peka, who gave affectionate atten¬tion to her foster-mother during her recent illness.
She had been a member of the Methodist church since childhood, taught in the Sunday School and associated in every department of church life and work. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and had great regard for her associates in that society.
She went to the Methodist Home November 6, 1926, from Rossville, Kansas, where she had battled with the struggles of life, and the boys having married, left her all alone, so from November 6, 1926 until now she had a little respite in this “house by the side of the way of life.” She was an omnivorous reader, sitting up late in the night and seemed to be at home and in good company when she had found a good book.

After attending a service at the Cowman Memorial church, which she greatly enjoyed, coming out of the church she missed a step and fell and was brought home and attended by a physician and after some little tune seemed to recover, but as we now remember perhaps she never was recovered from the injury to the back of her head when she fell on the hard sidewalk.
She has gone to her reward and has made such an impression upon those with whom she lived and has established such affectionate rela¬tions not only with the children and their families but with her neigh¬bors and friends that we will all want to go whither she has gone— in God’s Good Time.
The funeral services was con¬ducted by Rev. Zook assisted by Dr. S.B. Alderson, former pastor of the Presbyterian church and close friend of the family, Tuesday after¬noon, March 6.
The music was furnished by Mrs. Wm. Butters, Mrs. Clyde Cless, Rev. Gordon Pritchett and J.D. Fink, with Mrs. E.G. Griswold, pianist. Songs sung were—“Have Thine Own Way Lord,” “God Will Take Care of You,” “Sweet Bye and Bye.”
Those who attended from Rossville were: Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Fink, Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Griswold, Mr. and Mrs. D. Hartzell, Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Hartzell, Mrs. Clyde Cless, Mrs. Wm. Butters, Rev. Gordon Pritchett, Mrs. C.W. Vorhies, Mrs. Beulah McIntyre Mrs. R.J. Yocum, Mrs. Etta Boyles, Mrs. Roena Stamp, Mrs. L.P. Hartzell, Mrs. J.H. Eversole, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mason, all of Rossville; Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Sally, Mrs. L.E. Sally of Silver Lake. Former Ross¬ville people now pf Topeka, Mr. and Mrs. Dr. Pratt, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Thomas, Mrs. Hattie Miller, Miss Margaret Bond, Miss Ella Williams, Miss Nellie Nason, Mrs. C.E. Van Vleck, Mrs. Don Wilson, Mrs. Maude Conley, Mrs. Ben Ford, Mrs. Lillian Davis, Mrs. Nettie Startup McKoun of Wichita.

Obituary- Estes, George
Obituary- Estes, George
Obituary.
George W. Estes died Sunday morning, at about 5 o'clock, at the residence of his son-in-law, M.F. Tatman, aged 84 years. He leaves behind him nine children, two of whom reside in Rossville, namely, J. Estes and Mrs. M.F. Tatman.

The deceased was born in Kentucky, within three miles of the Mammoth Cave. At the age of 25 years he was married to Miss Corrilla Crane, whose home was near Lexington, Kentucky. Ten years later he moved to Iowa, and 22 years ago took up his abode in Rossville, where he followed the farming business. During his declining years he resided with Mr. and Mrs. M.F. Tatman, who made his life one of ease and comfort.

The funeral took place last Monday morning. The sermon was preached by Rev. J.G. Maver, who took as the basis of his remarks the 11th verse of the 16th Psalm, "Thou wilt shew me the path of life; in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand are pleasures forever more." the reverend gentleman spoke tenderly and feelingly of the many acts of kindness that had been shown him by Mr. and Mrs. Estes in by-gone years, and of the practical piety they constantly interwove with their lives.

The deceased was a member of the Baptist church of this place, having allied himself with it soon after arriving in Rossville. His latter days were solaced by the truths of the Christian religion, and he was comforted and cheered by the bright anticipation he enjoyed of meeting in the next world his departed wife, and other friends and relatives who had preceded him to the grave. The rainbow of promise and hope cheered him during the last days of his earthly pilgrimage and enabled him to say with Israel's King: "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."

George W. Eversole, son of John H. and Mary A. Eversole, was born at Peabody, Kansas, February 15, 1895. At the time he departed this life he was 31 years, 8 months and 13 days old.
He spent a few years of his boyhood in Arkansas, coming to Rossville when 16 years old. On November 10, 1920, he was married to Mabel A. Binns, who with two little daughters, Patricia Lee and Frances, survive him. One little daughter having preceded him in infancy, the other surviving relatives are: his mother, Mrs. J. H. Eversole, three sisters, Mrs. L.P. Hartzell and Mrs. Riley Wood of Rossville and Mrs. J.A. Roush, of Albuquerque, N.M., and one brother, John of Pocatello, Idaho.
George united with the Methodist church of Rossville in young manhood.
He engaged in various lines of work in Rossville then became a tool dresser in the oil fields. At the time of his departure on October 28, 1926 he was living in El Dorado, Kansas. He could not survive the shock of an appendicitis operation.
George was a merry, lovable boy who won friends wherever he went. This last fact was very strongly shown in El Dorado by the deeds of kindness and words of sympathy from his associates there.
George was a devoted son, to his aged mother and an unusually strong family tie bound him to his three sisters and his one brother. He was a kind and thoughtful husband and father.
He was industrious and honest and one of his greatest comforts was the fact that he was leaving $5,000 old line insurance to his wife and babies.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. Berg of the Presbyterian church, Sunday, October 31, at 2:30, at the home of F. N. Binns. The body was laid to rest in the Rossville cemetery.
The large gathering of friends and relatives and the beautiful floral offerings spoke forcibly of the high esteem in which George was held and of the sympathy for his family.
George Eversole passed away at 3 o’clock this morning in an El Dorado hospital, following an operation last Saturday for appendicitis.
News of his death was a shock to his Rossville relatives and friends.
The relatives received work about 11 o’clock last night that his condition had changed for the worse and his mother and sisters, Mrs. J.H. Eversole, Mrs. L.P. Hartzell and Mrs. Riley Wood, accompanied by Mr. F. N. Binns, reached Topeka in time to leave on the midnight train but too late to see George alive.
Mrs. L.P. Hartzell and Mrs. F.N. Binns went to El Dorado Friday. The former returned Tuesday when his condition was so favorable and no complications were anticipated. Mrs. Binns remained with her daughter, Mrs. Eversole.
The shock to the nervous system was too great and his heart become bad at 9 o’clock Wednesday night. Mrs. Eversole was with him from 9 o’clock until the end came.
The body will be brought to Rossville Friday morning. The funeral will be held Saturday at 2:30 at the F.N. Binns home if the relatives succeed in locating Mr. John Eversole, a brother who arrived in Texas last week but whose present address in unknown.

J.H. Eversole Passed Away Last Thursday
J.H. Eversole passed away at 5:45 last Thursday evening after an illness of about two years, from a cancer which started on the lip. Mr. Eversole had been steadily sinking for the past two months and for the past two weeks the family had looked for the end at any moment. Mr. Eversole bore his affliction with great fortitude his last moments being made as comfortable as the loving hands of his family could make him. John Eversole, the oldest son arrived on the morning of the day of the father’s decease, all the family being at his bedside when death came.
John Horatio Eversole was born near Mitchell, Indiana, April 11, 1857, being 60 years, 1 month and 6 days old when death came. On November 12, 1878 he was united in marriage to Mary A. McNab. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Eversole, five of whom are living.
Mr. and Mrs. Eversole first came to Kansas in 1884, locating in Marion county at Peabody where they remained until 1903 when they moved to Lowell, Ark. After living there nine years they came to Rossville.
The surviving members of his family beside his widow are, Mrs. J. H. Roush, of Albuquerque, N. Mex., Mrs. L.P. Hartzell, George Eversole and Glayds Eversole of Rossville, and John J. Eversole, of Pocatello, Idaho. Of the three children gone on before two died in infancy and one just in the fullness of beautiful womanhood. There are four grandchildren. One brother at Mitchell, Ind., was unable to attend the funeral because of sickness.
Mr. Eversole was a member of the M.W.A. for twenty-five years and a member of the Court of Honor. He was also a member of the M.E. church and his funeral was held at the Rossville M.E. church, Saturday, May 19, at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. W. T. Ward. Interment was made in the Rossville cemetery.
An Appreciation – Because of the anxiety occasioned to the family by the accident to John Eversole, so closely following the death of his father many things were necessarily neglected.
We take this means of thanking the M.E. church, High school, Ladies Club and Woodman Lodge, whose members we cannot reach separately, for the beautiful floral offerings in memory of J.H. Eversole. The many beautiful individual offerings have been acknowledged individually.
Our hears overflow with gratitude to the people of Rossville for their kindness to us during all of our trouble.
Mrs. J.H. Eversole and family
