Mitchell, 8S, a Silver Lake resident who died Friday at a Topeka nursing home, were at 1:30 pm Monday at the Parker mortuary with burial in the Silver Lake cemetery. Mr. Mitchell was born at Batavia Ohio, and moved to Rossville at the age of 18, spending the rest of his life in the Rossville and Silver Lake communities. He was a retired farmer; his wife, Mrs. Lucy Mitchell, died May 23, 1952. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Lulu Holcomb of Rossville; two sons, Wayne H. Mitchell of Rossville and Lawrence S. Mitchell of Silver Lake; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Alma Dean of Rossville and a brother, Charles Mitchell of Waukesha, Wisconsin. | |
| 8252 |  | Obituary- Mitchell, Jack 1 Jack W. Mitchell Jack W. Mitchell, 74, Delia, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka. He was born August 20, 1927, in Delia, the son of Earl C. and Clara E. Mahon Mitchell. He lived in Delia all of his life. He attended Stach School and was graduated from Silver Lake High School. After school, he farmed with his father on the family farm until he entered the United States Army. He was wounded in action, and received a Purple Heart. He was a Disabled Veteran. After being discharged from the service in 1952, he moved back to the farm near Delia and raised cattle. He was a member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Disabled Veterans of America, the Disabled Veterans of America - Korean War Branch, the Second Infantry Division of Korean War Veterans Alliance, Silver Lake Post No. 160 of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge No. 419 AF&AM, Delia, and the Scottish Rite. In 1965, he married Nadine E. Kratina-Bahner. She survives. He is also survived by a daugh¬ter, Denise Diederich, Rapid City. SD; a stepdaughter, Darlene Dean, Silver Lake; two stepsons, Darrel Bahner, Silver Lake, and DeLaine Bahner, Rossville; a sister, Maureen Wilson, O’Fallon, IL; seven stepgrandchildren. and two stepgreat-grandchildren. His service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Rossville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery, north of Silver Lake. There will be a family visitation at Piper Funeral Chapel. Rossville 66533 from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday (this evening). Memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka V.A. Mitchell, 74, Delia, who died Saturday, July 20,2002, at a Topeka hospital. He was born Aug. 20,1927, in Delia, to Earl C. and Clara E. Mahon Mitchell, and spent most of his life in the Delia community. He attended Stach School and graduated from Silver Lake High School. He was a farmer and stockman for many years. He was a disabled Army veteran of the Korean War. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart medal. He was discharged in 1952. He was a member of Delia Lodge No. 419, AF&AM, in Delia, Scottish Rite bodies in Topeka and Silver Lake Post No. 160 of the American Legion in Silver Lake. | 8254 |  | Obituary- Mitchell, Lucinda Lucinda “Cindy” Mitchell Lucinda “Cindy” Mitchell, age 63, passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 from injuries sustained in an auto accident. She was born October 8, 1957, in Topeka, KS, to Jesus and Mary Barranco. She was a graduate of Seaman High School. Cindy married the love of her life, Christopher “Chris” Mitchell on March 17, 1982. She was an avid reader and had a one of a kind sense of humor that left everyone wanting to sit just a few minutes longer around the kitchen table. She loved music, going to concerts and getting dressed up. From the moment she met Chris, they were inseparable. They never spent much time apart and it was a rare sighting to see one without the other. In addition to being a devoted wife, Cindy was also a dedicated mother and grandmother who loved her children and grandchildren fiercely. She is survived by her husband, Chris; Daughters, Tara James (Ray), Jade Mitchell (Valerie Owens), Kimber Graf (Kenny); Grandchildren, Kylie, Kenneth “Turbo” and Karter Graf; Brother, Al Barranco. To the friends we love and she treated as her own, Jerrica Barber, Trevor Wehner, Trent Fiedler, Travis Richie and Olivia Phinney, no matter the length of time that had passed, she always asked about you. | 8255 |  | Obituary- Mitchell, Mary Mrs. Mary J. Mitchell, a sister of Mrs. Wm. Miller of this city, died Monday evening at her home near Maple Hill from hemorrhage of the nose. The loss of Mrs. Mitchell is particularly sad because of the situation in which the children will be left. Mrs. Mitchell had a family of eight children none of whom are old enough to help in the care of the others. She is survived by her husband, mother, two sisters and four brothers. Interment was made in the Maple Hill cemetery Wednesday. | |

He died on April 20,1964. She later married Jack W. Mitchell. He died on July 20,2002. Mitchell, who reside in the Northern part of the township, was drowned in a well on Thursday of last week. The well was an unused one, situated at a considerable distance from the house. During her strolls she came to the old well and fell into it. No one witnessed the accident, and the whereabout of the little girl was not known until life had become extinct. | |

She passed away suddenly at 2:15 p.m. Monday, May 25, at the age of 73. Mrs. Mitchell was born at Brookville, Kansas. She and Mr. Mitchell were married on November 8, 1894, and had two daughters and one son. They went to Waukesha, Wisconsin, a number of years ago and all the family are living there except one grandson. She is survived also by four brothers, Fritz and Henry Lambotte of Rossville; Joe, of California and Edmond of Topeka; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces. | |

Mr. Mitchell was a foreman on several ranches in the Oxnard, Calif., area until 1947 when he moved to a farm near Delia where he farmed until 1961. He was born Jan. 11,1899, at Delia, the son of William and Anna Brown Mitchell. He moved to Rossville from Delia in 1959. Mr. Mitchell was a member of Rossville Presbyterian Church. He was married to Mollie Kovar on May 17, 1922, in Topeka. She died Aug. 30, 1985. A grandson, Lonnie Harold Winters, also preceded him in death. Survivors include two daughters, Clara M. Winters, Great Bend, and Thelma Lowy, Montebello, Calif.; a son, Cody Joe Mitchell, Bullhead City, Ariz.; a brother, Ervin Mitchell, Rossville; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 11 great- great-grandchildren. He was born January 11,1899, at Delia, the son of William and Anna Brown Mitchell. He grew up in the Delia community. Mr. Mitchell farmed until 1943, when he moved to Oxnard, Calif. He worked as a foreman on several ranches in the Oxnard area. He moved back to Delia in 1947, and moved to Rossville in 1959. He farmed until he retired in 1961. He was a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church. On May 17,1922, he was married to Mollie Kovar in Topeka. She died August 30,1985. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Lonnie Harold Winters. Survivors include two daugters, Clara M. Winters, Great Bend, and Thelma Lowy, Montebello, Calif; one son, Cody Joe Mitchell, Bullhead City, Ariz.; one brother, Ervin Mitchell, Rossville; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchil¬dren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. | 8264 |  | Obituary- Mitchell, Shirley J. 1 Shirley Mitchell Has Passed Away Shirley Jean (Walder) Roper Mitchell, Coweta, Okla., age 73, passed into the arms of Jesus on Friday, Jan. 7, 2022, at Hillcrest Medical Center, Tulsa, Okla., due to pneumonia. She was born Sept. 17, 1948, in Holton, to Jesse and Louise (Schumacher) Walder. She was raised on a farm north of Delia. Her grade school years were spent at High Prairie Country School north of Delia. She was baptized at the Lutheran church in Holton. She then attended Delia High School and was a member of the final graduating class in 1966. During high school she was a cheerleader. There were 13 individuals in this class. She worked for Hallmark Cards in Topeka for five years after graduation. Shirley married Bill Roper on March 14, 1970. To this union were born two daughters — Tammi and Tara. Shirley and Bill managed Limestone Springs Ranch south of Soldier until 1984. They later divorced. During this time, Shirley was active in East Grant Unit and Pleasant Valley Rustlers 4-H club. She helped many Jackson County kids with sewing, quilting, baking and craft projects. Gardening, reading, sewing, baking and visiting were her favorite pastimes along with raising her two daughters. On Jan. 11, 1987, Shirley married Jim Mitchell, owner of Mitchell Custom Harvesting, of Soldier. Traveling from Texas, through Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota and Montana during wheat harvest and then back to Colorado and Texas for fall milo and corn harvest became an important part of her life until 1994, when they divorced. | |
| 8265 |  | Obituary- Mitchell, Shirley J. 2 She cooked, did laundry, went for parts and groceries and cooked some more. She was always trying out a new recipe and most were well-received by the hired hands. During this time, she also continued raising her daughters. Her first grandchild, Keenan James Mitchell, was born in 1991. Being Grandma was the highlight of her every day. With the pending arrival of her second grandchild, Kylie Jean Mitchell, she did not like the long distance. She moved from Holton to Ulysses in 2000. She attended every school activity, ballgame and church event she could and was Keenan and Kylie’s biggest cheerleader. Grandson Camden Noah Ripperger was born in 2004. Granddaughter Gracen Noel Ripperger arrived in 2006. They lived in Broken Arrow, Okla., and this distance was too far for Grandma. She was planning another move to be near Tara and family when in November 2012, she suffered a stroke. Many hours, days and weeks of rehabilitation, with much help from Keenan, lead to her being able to live on her own. She moved to Coweta, Okla., in 2013, residing at Carriage Crossing senior apartments. During the past eight years, she has attended every school activity, ballgame and church event she could and was Camden and Gracen’s biggest cheerleader. Several of the kids’ friends affectionately named her Grandma Giggles. Shirley is survived by daughter and son-in-love, Tammi and Bryan Mitchell, Ulysses; daughter and son-in-love, Tara and Jeff Ripperger, Coweta, Okla.; grandson Keenan of Wichita; granddaughter Kylie of Ulysses; grandson and granddaughter Camden and Gracen of Coweta; brother and sister-in-love Carl and Linda Walder, Delia; nephew Wade Walder, Delia; great-nephews Chase and Truitt Walder; special friend of more than 50 years Jan Desch; many cousins and many, many friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles. Cremation has taken place. Services will be held in Broken Arrow, Okla., and Ulysses and burial in Holton, with dates and times to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Du Good Events, 107 N. | 8266 |  | Obituary- Mitchell, Stanley 1 Stanley Morris Mitchell SILVER LAKE — Stanley Morris Mitchell, 70, Silver Lake, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 1995, at an Onaga hospital. Mr. Mitchell was a farmer. He served in the Army's Engineer Corps during World War II and served two years overseas. He was born March 30, 1925, at Topeka, the son of Laurence S. and Helen P. Hennessey Mitchell. He grew up in the Rossville and St. Marys area and graduated from St. Marys High School. He had lived in Seattle before moving to Silver Lake. He was a member of Silver Lake United Methodist Church; Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion, Rossville; Philip Billard Post No. 1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Topeka; and was a former member of the Moose Lodge No. 555 at Topeka. He married Betty J. Heim on Jan. 1, 1948, at Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Judge Daniel L. Mitchell and Michael M. Mitchell, both of Silver Lake; and t four grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Parker-Price Mortuary. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Silver Lake Cemetery. He was born March 30, 1925, at Topeka, the son of Laurence S. and Helen P. Hennessey Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell lived in the Rossville and St. Marys communities while growing up and graduated from St. Marys High School. | 8268 |  | Obituary- Mitchell, Theodore Theodore Orville "Ted" Mitchell, 81, died Friday, August 11, 2006, at his home in Rossville. He was born November 9, 1924 near Delia the son of George W. and Ethel Lister Mitchell. He was raised in the Rossville community and attended Rossville High School. Ted had lived most of his life in the Rossville community. He had served in the United States Army serving in the Rome, Rhineland, Central Europe Southern France and Ardennes campaigns. Ted had worked over 40 years for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Plant in Topeka retiring in 1986. He was a charter member of the Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville. On August 19, 1946, Ted was united in marriage to Honora A. Karnowski at Topeka. She preceded him in death on June 9, 1991. Then on July 12, 1993 he was married to Beverly McMillan at Miami, OK. Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by a brother, Glen Mitchell; sisters, Velda O'Donnell, Elvara Olejnik, Sylvia Britt and Juanita Polson. Survivors are his wife Beverly of the home; two duaghters, Dianna Magee and her husband Harry, Raytown, MO and Debra Kisner and her husband Duke, Silver Lake; two sons; Daryl Mitchell and his wife Shirley, Rossville and Darwin Mitchell and his wife Pam, Ft. Payne, AL; step-children Del Lamb and his wife Carla and Debra Gamble, both of Wichita and Patricia Brown and her husband Troy and Michelle Roush and her husband Phil both of Topeka; two sisters Roxie Banta, Silver Lake and Ruby Adams, Portland, OR; 9 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren. | 8269 |  | Obituary- Mitchell, Walter Silver Lake Resident Dies In Hospital Walter J. Mitchell, of Silver Lake died Monday in a Topeka hospital. He was born January 14, 1897 at Elmont in Shawnee County and had spent most of his life in the Elmont and Silver Lake communities. He was a wheel inspector for Santa Fe Railway before he retired in September 1962. | 8271 |  | Obituary- Mitchell, William d. 1926 WILLIAM MITCHELL We have come to the place where we must record the transfer from time to eternity another of our choice soldier citizens from our home and Christian companionship—that of William Mitchell. He was born near Marathon, Clermont county, Ohio, July 6, 1843, where he spent his youth and early manhood and where he enlisted as a soldier with Captain Cochran in Co. D, 83rd Ohio Infantry. There he proved himself a true man and loyal soldier. This regiment came into service under President Lincoln’s first call in 1862 and participated in the battles of Chickasaw Bluffs, Arkansas, December, 1862, Port Gibson, May 17, 1863, Siege of Vicksburg and Jackson, Miss., in the months of May, June and July, 1863. He was taken prisoner April 8, 1864, at Sabine Cross Roads, Louisiana, and was exchanged October 23, 1864. Thru his conduct he won himself the esteem of his company and the officers of his command. March 22, 1865, he was united in marriage to Eliza Scott. Seven children—four sons and three daughters were born to this union. All of these survive except one son, Thomas who passed to his reward February 14, 1913. Mr. Mitchell was a true, good, kind husband and father, who gave himself in every way in ministries of love and helpfulness for their welfare and happiness and all of which they in turn reciprocated throughout life through kindly deeds and devoted care in his closing days. Nothing they could do was left undone to make him comfortable, for which he gave to them his heartiest thanks. Mr. Mitchell united with the Presbyterian church in Rossville in 1913, and was a faithful member to the last. He arose on the morning of his 61st wedding anniversary well and happy and in a short time was stricken with a light stroke of paralysis. After six weeks of illness he passed to his eternal rest on May 2, 1926. Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church Tuesday, May 4 conducted by Rev. Berg. Interment was in Rossville cemetery. They tell of courage never quenched of duties nobly done; Of that dark lonely death, Of everlasting glory won. And dearer still a nation’s love. Servant of God, well done, Thy glorious warfare’s past; The battle’s fought, the race is won. | |

| 8276 |  | Obituary- Mitchener, William 1 W.M. Mitchner Dead The passing away of W.M. Mitchner some time during early Sunday morning, came as a great shock to the people of Rossville, when word was passed around early Sunday morning telling of his death. The end came without a struggle and the exact hour is not known. Mrs. Mitchner awoke about five o'clock Sunday morning and discovered her husband was dead. A doctor and several neighbors were quickly summoned to the house. The doctor's examination showed that he had been dead several hours before Mrs. Mitchner awoke. Death was due to heart failure and the old gentleman's old age. Only the evening previous Mr. Mitchner was at the post office and his sudden collapse was totally unexpected. William Milton Mitchner was born in 1834 at Harrisburg, Pa. Early in life he came west and located at Wyanete, Ill. He was engaged in business there for several years. He had a desire to come further westward and in the early eighties decided to locate in Rossville, Kansas. He was at one time one of the greatest corn buyers on the Kansas division of the Union Pacific and had as much as 200,000 bushels of corn cribbed in his yard in Rossville at a time. In those days before a bank was established here many farmers were accustomed [illegible] got Mr. Mitchner and draw money as from a bank. One son, B.C. Mitchner and family of St. Marys and his devoted wife are left with the precious memory of a beautiful life. The funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian church Tuesday Dec. 22, at 2 o'clock. Rev. Alderson, presided, assisted by Rev. H.L. Nelson of Topeka, his former pastor and Rev. Walter Ward of the Methodist church. He had stepped on a nail July 13, running it through his foot. For the last eighteen years, Mr. Moege had owned and operated a store at 2222 Lincoln street. He had been actively in charge of the store all that time except two years when the family lived on their farm north of Rossville. He was active in the Retail Grocers’ association. He was born in Leavenworth, June 12, 1883, and was reared in Alma, Kan. He had made his home in Topeka the last twenty years. He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church, having been associated with St. John’s Lutheran church during his entire residence in Topeka. Mr. Moege is survived by his widow; one son. Cedric; a daughter, Dorothy; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth O’Herren, who lives in Denver, Colo.; and a brother, Otto Theel, of Enid, Oklahoma. He lived his entire life in Grove Township north of Silver Lake and was graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1941. Homer attended the College of Emporia. He served as a Staff Sgt. in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, John Morrell, and then for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for 31 years. Homer was a member of the Silver Lake United Methodist Church and American Legion Post # 160 of Silver Lake. Homer played baseball for the Owls Baseball Club 'of Topeka; the American Legion; and Mongold Men’s Local Baseball Team. He had also managed, a Little League Team. In life fishing was his favorite past-time. He was married to Ollie "Maxine" Hixon on-March 20, 1.948 at Lawrence. She preceded him in death on Feb. 18, 2003. He was also preceded in death by a son, Sidney Dale "Sid" Mongold, on Oct. 12,1986. Surviving are 3 grandchildren: Tammy Lee Useman of Orlando, FL, Rodney D. Mongold of Kaycee, WY, and Sam E. She was born November 24, 1927, in Maple Hill, the daughter of Omer Franklin and Bertha Leah Price Hixon. She graduated from Highland Park High School, and had resided in Grove Township, north of Silver Lake, since 1951. She was a member of the Silver Lake United Methodist Church, and had been a volunteer on the Funeral Dinner Committee at the church. She was an exercise instructor for the Silver Lake Senior citizens, Inc. for several years. She was also a Red Cross volunteer. She served on the Board of Directors for Grove Township since 1952, where she worked on the Election Board for the Township. On March 20, 1948, she married Homer D. Mongold in Lawrence. He survives. Mrs. Mongold was an exercise instructor for Silver Lake Senior Citizens Inc. for several years and she had been a Red Cross volunteer. She was born Nov. 24,1927, in Maple Hill, to Omer Franklin and Bertha Leah Price Hixon. She graduated from Highland Park High School and had lived in the Grove Township north of Silver Lake since 1951. Mrs. Mongold was a member of Silver Lake United Methodist Church and the funeral dinner committee at the church. She served on the board of directors for Grove Township since 1952 and also worked on the election board for the township. She married Homer D. Mongold on March 20, 1948, in Lawrence. He survives. Other survivors include two sisters, Ninabel Hauschild, Mayer, Ariz., and Violet Hixon, Topeka; and three grandchildren. He was killed Sunday, Oct. 12, in a cave-in while working on a water line for the City of Kaycee. Mr. Mongold also was a volunteer firefighter at Kaycee. He was born Oct. 15, 1946, .in Topeka, the son of Homer and Maxine Hixon Mongold. He attended Silver Lake Schools and was graduated from Silver Lake High School. Mr. Mongold was a member of the United Methodist Church, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Grove 4-H Club, all while living at Silver Lake. He was a Scoutmaster and a member of Grace Mission Church at Kaycee. He was married to Linda Martins. She survives. | 8293 |  | Obituary- Monhollon, Parker 2 Parker LeAnn Monhollon, 9, of Silver Lake, passed away on July 10, 2017 in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, following an 18 month battle with DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma), a form of brain cancer. Parker LeAnn Monhollon was born on July 26, 2007 to Amanda and Danny Monhollon. She was born with multiple heart defects and her parents were told that she would need major heart surgery before the age of 6 months. Parker went weekly, and then monthly for echo cardiograms and each time we heard the good news that her heart was doing its job, so no surgery was required. Parker was a vibrant, sassy, smart, and beautiful girl who loved to dance, make Youtube videos, and play with her 8 year old brother, Dominic, and her 15 year old sister, Rivers. About a week before Christmas, Amanda noticed that Parker had developed a very noticeable lazy eye. The school nurse had even contacted her regarding double vision and headaches. After getting some opinions from family members, she decided to schedule an eye exam. The optometrist suspected that the problem wasn't her eye, but something else. He ordered an MRI just in case and then hoped to start vision therapy and possibly an eye surgery, if needed. The MRI was finally done on Friday, January 15, 2016. The Pediatric Oncologist and Pediatric Intensive Care physicians came to Amanda and said they needed to speak with her in private. They had found a brain tumor near her brain stem. A phone call to dad was made, and once he arrived, he was also given the news. Though we knew for sure it was a tumor, we still weren't sure which type. The next day, Saturday, January 16, 2016, we went out for breakfast to IHOP (Parker's favorite) where she ordered blueberry pancakes (also her favorite!) On the way home, we received a call from Parker's pediatric oncologist, who informed us of the type of brain tumor Parker had, a DIPG. The fight began in the United States, and continued to Europe, and back again to the United States. Her fight ended in Monterrey, Mexico. During her 18 month journey she received multiple treatments and surgeries. She stayed positive and always forward-thinking until her body had nothing left to give. It is up to those of us who knew her, and followed her, to continue her legacy. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2017 in the Sunflower Ballroom at The Maner Conference Center, 1717 SW Topeka Blvd. Guests should utilize the parking area at 17th & Western. | 8294 |  | Obituary- Monhollon, Ronald Ronald Lee “Muggs” Monhollon Rossville-Ronald Lee “Muggs” Monhollon, 68, died Tuesday, August 29, at his home in Rossville. He was born in Goff, on November 5, 1937 to Vivian Aldine Morris and Donald Guy Monhollon. Mr. Monhollon lived in Topeka and Junction City in his youth, but also in Goff, where he lived with his foster parents, Vern and Pearl Monhollon. He graduated from Junction City High School in 1955. On May 19,1957 he was united in marriage to Anne Marie Davis at Valley Falls. Mr. Monhollon worked as an auto mechanic for many years before turning to welding. He worked for Henry Manufacturing (later Allis-Chalmers) in Topeka, rising to plant superintendent of the facility. He taught welding at Kaw Area Vocational School and for the United States Air Force at Forbes Field. Mr. Monhollon was also the General Manager of Henry Corporation in Topeka. In 1975 he established Rossville Machine and Weld, which he and his wife operated until they sold the business and retired in January 2006. He served nine years in the Kansas Army National Guard. He was a member of the Rossville Lions Club and the Rossville Booster Club. Mr. Monhollon was a member of the American Welding Society. He had just returned home from a trip to China where he watched his grandson Dylan Channel play basketball for the Washburn University Men’s Basketball Team. Mr. Monhollon was preceded in death by his parents, his foster parents, Vern and Pearl Monhollon; three brothers Morris, Donald and Gerald; and a foster sister Ernestine Kerr. In addition to his wife Anne, Mr. Monhollon is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Rusty Monhollon and Sonja Erickson, Middletown, Maryland; a daughter and son-in-law Ronda and Jim Channel of Rossville; a sister Janet Monger, Phoenix, AZ; three foster sisters, Pat Smith, Holton, Joan Hollis, Horton and Jean Rutz, Holton; an aunt Helen Duesler, Topeka; eight grandchildren, Daniel and Richard Monhollon; Dylan, Roni, Dana and Brooke Channel; and Davis and Rachael Erickson. | 8295 |  | Obituary- Monroe, Arthur A memorial service for Arthur Sam Monroe, the Willard colored boy who died in France, will be held next Sunday afternoon at 2:30 in the West Union church, south of Willard. Rev. Shaffer will give the address. Sam was well known this side the river and was highly respected by his acquaintances. He was a member of the 5th Provisional Co., 805th Inf. He died shortly after landing in France, of pneumonia. Returned soldiers are especially invited to the service. The Leavenworth Times gives the following account of the return of the remains of Sam Monroe, a colored boy well known here and especially around Willard where he was raised. Mr. and Mrs. Walier Jones went to Leavenworth Wednesday of last week to attend the funeral. Yesterday marked the first arrival in Leavenworth of a soldier’s body from the graveyards of France. The body is that of Arthur Samuel Monroe, colored, who died September 15, 1918, at Brest, France. The body accompanied by a soldier from the Fort Jay, New York, command, arrived yesterday morning and was received by the Carter Undertaking Company. A military burial will be held this afternoon at the family lot in Mount Munice cemetery, the Rev. Mr. Curtis, pastor of the Second Baptist church officiating. Arthur Samuel Monroe was born twenty-seven years ago this month in Topeka. He was reared on a farm in Wabaunsee county, this state. He was drafted into the military service and after a short period of training at Camp Funston was sent overseas as a member of the Fifth Provisional Company of the Eight-Hundred and Fifth Pioneer Infantry. On board the transport, Monroe contracted pneumonia and upon debarkation he was taken immediately to the base hospital at Brest, France, where he died within a short time after his arrival. His sister, Mrs. William Simpson, who is the only living relative, lives at 407 Pennsylvania avenue, this city. The body of Monroe is the first to be received in Leavenworth county from the government cemeteries in France. Several more may be expected soon from their resting places, where “popies grow” Leavenworth city and county relatives of the men who made the supreme sacrifice during the war have been notified that the bodies would be returned if the request was made. The casket containing Monroe’s body is under government seal and cannot be opened except in violation of government and state laws, regulating the matter of disinterred bodies. | |

| 8297 |  | Obituary- Montgomery, Angeline 2 Died MONTGOMERY – At her home in Rossville, Kan., Feb. 28, 1887, after a long and lingering illness, Angeline Montgomery, wife of Ashe Montgomery, in the 61st year of her age. Mrs. Montgomery was born near Athens, Ohio, January 12, 1826. Her early life was spent in that vicinity and in her 21st year she entered upon her Christian life, being immersed by Elder A. Gaston. In 1857 she was married, and since that time has been a faithful and loving wife. We have known few women who were her equal in untiring activity. She could not be content without some object always before her to excite her thought and enlist her energies. This energy was not confined to the world, but in the church and mission she was the fame untiring worker. Uniting a large hearted generosity with her activity she was ever ready at the call of the church. Firm in the faith, warm and adhesive in her affection, quick in her sympathies and generous in all her impulses, she was a fountain of cheerfulness and joy among her friends and family. She was the strength and cheer and joy of life in the home circle and how much her loss is felt in the family none can know. During her protracted illness which has lasted ever since she came to Rossville she has maintained a cheerful hope and trust. Rev. Howell preached her funeral to a large and attentive audience, after which she was laid away in the Rossville cemetery to await the resurrection morn. Asbe Montgomery was born January 3rd, 1820, in Tyler county, W. Va. He united with the church when but 18 years of age. Much of the early part of his life was spent in the western part of West Virginia and in Ohio. March 21sst, 1907, at the age of 87 years, 2 months and 21 days, he passed his devoted Christian life over into the keeping of his heavenly Father. Sixty years of his life had been devoted to working in the Lord's vineyard preaching the lovely truths of the gospel, leading men and women to Christ. We rejoice to know this noble old soldier of the cross has fought the good fight, has kept the faith and hence forth there is laid up for him a crown of everlasting happiness eternally in the heavens. Father came to Kansas 22 years ago locating first at Manhattan, Riley county. After a term of years he removed his family to Rossville where the last days of his life were spent. Father leaves children and grandchildren behind who deeply mourn their earth loss but they rejoice to know father died in the triumphs of a living faith. Blessed hope; sweet consolation that enables one when starting down the slippery banks of the Jordan of death, when the dashing waves of that remorseless river are already throwing the icy spray of its water around the soul, to look beyond the dark stream to the bright field, to the pearly gates, to the golden paved streets, and finally up to the throne of the eternal King, to lean calmly and trustingly upon that are that never wearies and place implicit confidence in Him who has said I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. Take courage dear children and hope to the end for the night will soon pass and then day will soon dawn. Then death will sadden no hearts and dim no eyes for the Lord will wipe away all tears. | |

| 8300 |  | Obituary- Montgomery, George C. G. C. MONTGOMERY MURDERED George C. Montgomery, a former resident of this city, was murdered at his home in Winfield, Kas., last Saturday night. Mr. Montgomery was a detective in the employ of the A. T. & S. F. Co., and it was while seated at the table in the sitting room of his home making out a report of his week’s work to his chief, when he was fired upon through the window and instantly killed. There is no clue to the murderer, but cowboys from an Oklahoma ranch are suspected. Montgomery had incurred the ill-will of the cowmen in his official capacity. They then threatened his life. George Montgomery was for many years a resident of this city. His father, Mr. A. Montgomery has resided in this city for the past eighteen years. George was a deputy sheriff in Topeka ten years ago and went to the Santa Fe railway as a detective about 1803. He was an active man and soon came to hold a responsible position in the company’s secret service. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Winfield, and leaves a wife and two sons. About 1000 people attended the funeral at Winfield last Monday. The services were held in a large tent that had been used for holding revival services, because the crowd was larger than the Christian Church would seat. His step-brother, Scott Easdale, of this city attended the funeral but his father said he would rather remember his boy as he saw him last than to see his face torn and lacerated with the buckshot.
