| 9901 |  | Obituary- Stackhouse, George From findagrave.com 2/15/2018 George was born the 19th of September 1846, at LaPorte, Indiana. His parents were Jacob STACKHOUSE, of Pennsylvania, and Caroline HART, of Kentucky. He was married to Charlotte Coryell, in 1869, and they had three children together. His wife was still married to her husband, Dennis, and got a divorce in 1871. On the January, 30th 1880, his second marriage was to Telia JACKSON, in Kansas. Their children were: Maggie, Dora Elizabeth, George Thomas, and Grover Cleveland. Maggie died in infancy. He was a stone mason by trade. He came West in 1890, worked on the Salt Lake Temple as a stone mason. He moved to Goldendale in 1896, where he spent the rest of his life. During his residence, he served the city as Marshall for a number of years. He was also an Alderman. He died the 25th of January, 1920 at the age of 73 years. Funeral services were by the Methodist church. | |
| 9902 |  | Obituary- Stadler, Alfreda 1 Alfreda C. Stadler Alfreda C. Stadler, 94, of Topeka, died March 2, 2009 at Clare Bridge of Topeka care home. She was born on December 24, 1914 in Edgerton near Beaver Creek, Minnesota the daughter of John and Margareta (Zeisenitz) Funch. Alfreda was raised by Rev. H. J. and Libby Meinders. Alfreda was a 1932 graduate of Auburn Rural and Graduated from Emporia Presbyterian College. She was a school teacher who started in one room school houses in Rossville, Auburn and Watson. Alfreda also taught school at Sacred Heart School where she retired in 1977. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Altar Society at the church, and Philip Billard Post #1650 of the V.F.W. She married John Stadler in Atlanta, Georgia on November 25, 1943. He preceded her in death on August 6, 2000. A daughter, Margaret Marie Stadler died on April 18, 1948. Alfreda is survived by two sons, John Edward Stadler and Richard Alfred Stadler and wife Karen and one daughter Roberta I. Stadler all of Topeka. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Greg and Amanda. Alfreda will lie in state at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Wednesday after 3:00 p.m. where an Altar society Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. and a Parish Rosary will be at 5:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. I thought her only connection was her marriage to John who was raised in Rossville. But, I was talking to their son yesterday and he said that Alfreda taught at Lipp School SE of Rossville. An interesting thing he told me. She was an indentured servant from the age of 7 to 18. I had never heard of indentured servants after the colonial times. I wouldn't believe him until he showed me documents he had finally gotten from the state of Minn, though they were not supposed to be released until after 100 years. I am guessing they had more children available than they could adopt out, so this was a way for the state to avoid raising the kids. If they didn't work hard or well enough they could be turned back in and indentured to someone else. Most were boys sent to work on farms. Back then, even free kids in rural areas often didn't go to school more than 4-8 years. No child labor laws back then. The indenture contract specified that upon their 18th birthday, they were to be given their freedom, S100, and two sets of clothing. | 9904 |  | Obituary- Stadler, Elizabeth ELIZABETH STADLER Elizabeth Osborn was born in Jefferson county, Iowa, December 25, 1844. She passed away at Topeka, Friday, January 20, 1933, at the advanced age of 88 years, and 26 days. She was one of a family of ten children, of whom only three survive her. There are two sisters, Mrs. George Smith, and Mrs. W. W. Morgan, both of Rossville, and a brother, Milton Osborn of Deerfield, Kansas. She was married to John Stadler about 1900, but he departed this life a number of years ago. She has been a citizen of this community and County since 1882, and has many friends and relatives who regret her passing, though they appreciate her long life of unselfishness among us. She was always frail and in poor health, yet she did her part, and made her contribution to the community life. Brief funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Horton. A ladies quartet composed of Mrs. Belva Jane Butters, Mrs. Minnie Navarre, Mrs. E. E. Witter and Miss Lucille Griswold, with Miss Edith Higginbotham at the piano, furnished the music. The pall bearers were E. G. Griswold, W. E. Ellis, R. R. Hawks, J. C. Startup, John Reid and Austin Sebring. Interment was made in the Rossville cemetery. Other survivors include his four children and spouses, David and Phyllis Stadler and Helen and Robert Huffman, Rossville, James and Warrene Stadler, Silver Lake, and Rose and Fred Brown, Tucson, Ariz.; along with 9 grandchildren; a step grandchild; 15 great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include Sylvester Stadler, Ruth Cornelius and Nick Stadler, in Kansas, Kathryn Lombardi, in New Jersey, and Irene Mader, in Texas. Twin infant daughters preceded Mr. Stadler in death. Mr. Stadler worked in steel construction during World War II in the naval shipyard in Bremerton, Wash. In 1945, he returned to Kansas and farmed for 16 years. He was in partnership with Mr. Bill Martinek at Rossville Truck and Tractor and Wamego Truck and Tractor for 19 years. He served 3 years as mayor of Rossville and served as a township trustee for a partial term before moving to Topeka. In 1991, Mr. and Mrs. Stadler moved to Phoenix. The past six years they made their home with their daughter Rose, and her husband, in Arizona. Mr. Stadler received his Christian baptism while a member of the Rossville Christian Church. He was born December 16, 1916, in Topeka, the son of Nicholas and Barbara Walter Stadler. He was employed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for 35 years before he retired in 1981. He served in die Army during World War II. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Local No. 308 of United Steel Workers of America and a life member of Billard Post No. 1650 of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He married Alfreda Funck- Meinders November 25, 1943, in Atlanta. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, John Edward Stadler and Richard Alfred Stadler, both in Topeka; a daughter, Roberta Irene Stadler, Topeka; three brothers, George Stadler, Phoenix, AZ, Sylvester Stadler, Topeka, and Nicholas Stadler, Wichita; four sisters, Marcella Ruff, Rossville, Mildred Wallace and Irene Mader, both in Topeka, Kathryn Lombardi, Kenvil, NJ, and Ruth Cornelison, Newton; and two grandchildren. She was born in Blue Rapids, Kansas on September 8,1932, the daughter of Charles and Mary (McClain) Beasley. Mila was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Altar Society at the church. Mila enjoyed antiquing, attending the annual ERC Designer Showcase House, shopping and collecting milk glass. Mila's family and grandchildren were very special to her. She worked for twenty-one years at the family liquor store, Stadler Liquor in the Oakland neighborhood. She married Donald Stadler in Topeka, on June 23, 1956 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Donna (Jordan) Rachlen, of Rogers, Arkansas, Mary (Johnny) Lawrence, of Topeka, Charlene Stadler of Overland Park, Kansas; one son, Steve Stadler of Topeka; one brother, Charles (Dorothy) Beasley Jr., of Rochester, Minnesota, two sisters, Florence Nada Cowherd of Rossville, Kansas and Mary Jo (Ron) Cowles of Seymour, Tennessee. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mila was preceded in death by a sister Dorothy Bearden. Mila will lie in state on Tuesday after 4:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where the family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with interment following in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Born in Rossville, Kansas, on January 23,1931, he was the second youngest of 15 children born to German immigrants Barbara (Walters) and Nicholas Stadler. Nick retired in 1989 after 32 years of working in freight inspection with Santa Fe Railway. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Patricia "Pat" (Gamba); daughters Carol (Dave) Waters, Janet (Danny) Daniels, Angie (Mike) Holladay, and Diane (Mark) Becker; 6 grandchildren, & 2 great grandchildren. | 9914 |  | Obituary- Stadler, Phyllis Phyllis B. Stadler Rossville – Phyllis B. Stadler, 74, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. She was born Feb. 24, 1940 at Richmond the daughter of Joseph Richard and Mary Belle Rousselo Coffey. She was one of nine children born to Joseph Richard and Mary Belle Coffey. Phyllis moved to Rossville at an early age living on a farm west of town with Harry and Etta Gutshall. She graduated from Rossville High School in 1958. Phyllis graduated from Crums Beauty College in Manhattan and had been a cosmetologist for many years, she dearly loved her elderly clients. She was a secretary for Rossville High School. Phyllis was a member of the Rossville Christian Church. She was a homemaker and homeworker. She loved yard work. Mrs. Stadler was active in all of her children’s activities while they were growing up. She had been a Sunday school teacher and a vacation bible school teacher and 4-H leader. Phyllis was an avid sports fan. She was preceded in death by siblings, Sheldon Eugene, Mary Lou, Etta Yvonne, Joseph Richard, Betty Jo and Patricia Jane. Phyllis was also preceded in death by a grand-daughter, Maddison A. Gray. Survivors include her husband David Stadler of the home; two sons Lance (Aida) Stadler, Rossville and Bryant Stadler, Charlotte, NC; her daughter, Lisa (Kevin) Reece, Overbrook; a brother, Fred Coffey; a sister, Shirley Kittto; grandchildren, Montana & Makayla Stadler, Jacob and Aiden Stadler, Matthew Gray, Autumn (Blake) Burks; Audrey (Brian) King, Weston (Kayla) Reece; great-grandchildren, Addison, Briggam, Canton and Elayna. | 9915 |  | Obituary- Stadler, Shirley Shirley (Maxine) Parr Stadler Born September 29,1920 and died May 16, 2015 Shirley was one of 5 daughters born to Shirley O. and Edna Parr of Rossville Kansas. Shirley graduated from Rossville High and married her high school sweetheart, Joseph V. Stadler. The newly married couple moved to Bremerton Washington where they raised 3 children. After Joe retired they spent some years in Phoenix Arizona and Joe died there in 1996. Shirley has since resided in Yakima Washington until her passing. Shirley was a most gracious and loving woman and her family was everything to her. She was also a proud DAR member until she was into her 80s. She survived by her son Larry Joe Stadler and his wife, Donna, who live in Wickenberg Arizona; and daughter Barbara Lorene Thomas who resides in Centralia Washington. There is one surviving sister, Thelma Martin of Topeka Kansas and numerous other family members. Her son Walter Lee Stadler died in Harrington Maine in 2011 and a grandson, Scott Stadler died in Yakima Washington in 1982. Shirley and Joe’s 3 children blessed them with 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren. She was their “GG” and she will be missed. A Private Memorial for the immediate family in Yakima has taken place. | |

She worked for Union Pacific Railroad in Kansas City during World War II, Morrell Packing Co., Topeka Wholesale Grocery, and Gamble Robinson Produce Co. in Topeka. Sue was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and very devoted to her faith. Survivors include her siblings, Mary Stadler, Barbara (Bill) Knoebber, Sophie Trull, Regina Matheny, Theresa (Don) Fletchall and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Cecilia Stadler, John Stadler, Catherine Stadler, Jim Stadler and Paul Stadler. She was born December 31, 1918 at Rossville, the daughter of Shirley and Edna James Parr. Mrs. Stadler attended all 12 grades of school in Rossville. She was united in marriage to George Stadler on May 6,1939. They moved to Bremerton, WA. In 1945 they returned to Rossville and farmed for 16 years. She then worked as a bookkeeper for Rossville Truck & Tractor for 20 years until her retirement. She moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1991, then to Tucson. Mrs. Stadler moved to Alamogordo, NM, in 2004 where she lived with her daughter Rose and her husband Fred Brown. She moved to Wamego in 2006 where she lived until entering Rossville Manor. Mrs. Stadler was a member of the Rossville Christian Church. Mrs. Stadler was preceded in death by her husband George on September 17, 2004. She was also preceded in death by infant twin daughters and a daughter, Helen Huffman on July 26,2006. Survivors include two sons, David G. (Phyllis) Stadler, Rossville, and James P. (Warrene) Stadler, Silver Lake; a daughter, Rose M. (Fred) Brown, Topeka; two sisters, Maxine "Shirley" Stadler, Yakima, WA, and Thelma Martin, Topeka; 9 grand- children, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Memorial Graveside services will be at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the Rossville Cemetery. She was born in Topeka, Kansas on January 7,1927, the daughter of Peter and Alice (Barrett) Miller. Harriett graduated from Topeka High School. She worked for Luce Press Clippings, Pelletier’s and then for the State Fire Marshal’s Office, where she worked in the Arson Division. She loved humor, riding motorcycles, flying, cooking, family occasions, and loved animals. She was a KISS fan and was a ballerina in her youth. Harriett was a former member of the Eastern Star. She married Claude E. "Doc" Stafford on October 18, 1947 in Rossville, Kansas. He preceded her in death in 2005. Harriett is survived by a daughter, Vicki Stafford-Looka (Lorin) of Topeka, a son Terry Stafford (Sheryl) of Topeka, 2 grandchildren, Natalie and Hilarie Stafford, and 5 great-grandchildren, Clayton, Evan, Nathan, Alan, and Halie. She was also preceded in death by six siblings. Harriett will lie in state on Monday after 2:00 p.m. at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. Dr. Stalker, 86, was a dental surgeon in Topeka for 37 years before he retired in 1973. He was an oral surgery consultant at Topeka Veterans Administration Hospital and a former staff member of Stormont- Vail and St. Francis hospitals, all in Topeka. He was born April 17, 1905, at Adrian, in Jackson County, the son of Winfred A. and Frances Anna Ward Stalker. He was graduated from Rossville High School and attended Kansas State Agricultural College for three years in Manhattan. He later was principal of public schools at Willard, then in 1926 entered the University of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry at Philadelphia. He was graduated in 1930 with a degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery. Dr. Stalker was a member and elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Topeka and attended the United Methodist Church in Satanta. He was a past member and officer of Shawnee County Dental Society, First District Dental Society and Kansas State Dental Association and a former member of American Dental Association. He was married to Ruth Wilma Van Orsdol June 2, 1932, at Lawrence. She died Aug. 9, 1977. A son, Norman V. Stalker, also preceded him in death. Survivors include a son, Dr. Clinton L. Stalker Jr., DVM, Satanta; a sister, Mrs. I.S. Lauch, Woodland, Calif.; a brother, Dr. F.O. Stalker, DDS, El Paso, Texas; and five grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the United Methodist Church in Satanta. Later memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Westminster Presbyterian Church in Topeka. Stalker, in Jackson county, Kansas, at 1 o'clock p.m., March 3, 1879. Edward Lewelling Stalker was born in Bedford, Lawrence county, Indiana, Nov. 6, 1856. But while still a babe his parents moved with him to Washington county, Ind., where his childhood days were passed until September, 1869, when, with his parents, he came to Jackson county, Kansas. On that occasion, although not quite thirteen years old, he drove a team all. the way from Indiana here -'a wearisome journey of nearly 700 miles .... When seven years old he was attacked with scrofula in the hip, from which he did not recover for three years. At fourteen years of age he was again afflicted - this time with white swelling in the knee, suffering with it, more or less for five years. The last four years of his life he was not able to walk without crutches. About a year ago he was attacked with hemorrhage of the lungs .... The funeral services, conducted by Rev. A. D. Stalker, step-father of the world’s heavyweight pugilistic champion, Jess Willard, at the home of a daughter in Delia, Kan. Mr. Stalker had been for a number of years a resident of Quinton Heights. Helping in establishing the Quinton Heights Baptist church nine or ten years ago. Long before the present heavyweight champion was born, Mr. Stalker and Jess’ father lived on adjoining farms in Adrian, a small town located on the edge of the Pottawatomie reservation. Jess’ father died a short time after the present champion was born, and when Jess was 11 years old, his mother and Mr. Stalker married. Jess and his mother then went to live on the Stalker farm. Jess was raised there and it was while there he acquired his great skill at “bronco busting” and “roping, ” which in later years meant great sums of money for him on the vaudeville stage. Mrs. Stalker died in 1908. Mr. Stalker came to Topeka many years ago, and when his step-son was battling against the big black, Jack Johnson, April 5, 1915, for the heavyweight championship of the world, (although being strongly apposed to prize fights, he nevertheless kept in close touch with the local newspaper offices, and when he learned that Jess had won by a knockout in the twenty-sixth round, it is safe to say that there was not a prouder man in Topeka. He was born November 30, 1915, in St Clere, the youngest of five children of Winfred Arthur and Frances Anna Ward Stalker. He was reared in Rossville and graduated from Rossville Rural High School in 1934. He graduated from Washburn University, Topeka, with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and from the University of Kansas City (MO) with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. From 1938 to 1943, he was a member of the Topeka Fire Department. Upon completion of his dental training, he entered private practice in Topeka with his brother, Dr. Clinton L. Stalker, Sr. in 1946, then accepted a commission as an officer of the U.S. Army Dental Corps in 1949. Mr. Stalker’s military service took him and his family to assignments at Frankfurt and Landstuhl, Germany; Vicenza, Italy; Kansas City, MO; Fort Sam Houston, TX; Fort Knox, KY; and Fort Lewis, WA. His career culminated at Fort Bliss, TX, with an assignment at William Beaumont Army Hospital as Chief of Oral Surgery in 1968. He received the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct upon his retirement as a full colonel in the "Dental Corps in 1970. He retired with his wife to El Paso, where they lived for the next 30 years. He married his childhood sweetheart, Kathleen Pelfrey, on April 8, 1939, and celebrated 56 years of marriage before she died in 1997. Stamp Albert Anderson Stamp, a resident of Rossville the past 50 years, died in a hospital at McPherson, Ks., Sunday, Dec. 29, at the age of 80 years, 2 months and 2 days. For many years he was the Union Pacific section foreman here, being placed on the retired list about ten years ago. Since the death of Mrs. Stamp, Feb. 3, 1935, while maintaining his home here spent most of his time among his children and other relatives. He was visiting his son, Clarence, at McPherson when death came. Mr. Stamp was born Oct. 27, 1860 near Topeka. He married Roena Equilla Richards, Sept. 19, 1887, at Erie, Kansas. Nine children were born to them, three passing away in infancy. Those surviving him, all reared in this community, are four daughters, Estella Burns, Rock Ford, Colo.; Nora Atkinson, Lincoln, Neb.; Mary Hansas, Kansas City, Mo.; Josephine Johnson, Eskridge, Ks.; Two sons, Edwin of Green River, Wyo., and Clarence, of McPherson, Kansas. Also two brothers Edwin Stamp, Junction City, Kan., and John Stamp, Ogden, Kansas; three sisters, Mrs. Rose Neaves, Corvallis, Mont.; Anna O'Malley, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Lula Oates, Elmont, Kan.; thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Rossville Methodist church, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the past, Rev. C.P. Broadfoot. Music was furnished by Mrs. N.G. | 9937 |  | Obituary- Stamp, Roena MRS. ALBERT STAMP Roena Equilla Richards was born July 14, 1872, at Erie, Kansas. She passed away at her home in Rossville February 3, 1935, at the age of 62 years, 6 months and 19 days. She was united in marriage to Albert Stamp on September 19th, 1887, at Erie, Kansas. To this union nine children were born, three of whom died in infancy. She is survived by her husband four daughters, Mrs. Estella Burns Ordway, Colorado, Mrs. Mary Hansen, St. Marys, Mrs. Nora Atkinson Topeka, and Mrs. Josephine DeGraff Rossville; two sons, Edwin Stamp Evanston, Wyoming, and Clarence Stamp, Manhattan; one sister, Mrs. James Dodge, Chico, California. There are also twelve surviving grandchildren and two great grand-children. Mr. and Mrs. Stamp have lived in Rossville since 1890. She has been associated with the Methodist church for years, and was the member of longest standing in the local Royal Neighbors of America lodge. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Horton. Hymns selected by Mrs. Stamp before her death were sung by a quartet of ladies, Mrs. E. G. Griswold, Mrs. Arthur Wallerstedt, Mrs. C. E. Gresser and Mrs. E. E. Witter, accompanied by Miss Edith Higginbotham. Pallbearers were L. F. Page, William Sneller, Ira Hopkins, F. E. Strimple M. L. Whearty and E. D. Hartzell. The Royal Neighbors attended in a body and had charge of the services at the grave. Burial was in the Rossville cemetery. | 9938 |  | Obituary- Stanley, Agustus ROSSVILLE LOSES SPLENDID CITIZEN Mr. A. S. Stanley passed away Friday, August 22, at 12 o’clock at his home at the age of 71 years, 4 months and 6 days, following an illness of about two weeks. A contributary cause of his death was uraemia poisoning. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Methodist church conducted by Rev. G. G. Horne of Topeka, assisted by Rev. James Kennedy of the Rossville Christian church. This funeral was attended by a large gathering of sorrowing friend. Special music was furnished by Messrs. N. S. Clothier of St. Marys, A. A. Cless, Mrs. G. C. Albin and Mrs. Peter Navarre. The pallbearers were Messrs. C. E. Cless, E. D. Hartzell, Wm. Kerr, C. M. McPherson, A. A. Parr and R. D. James. The body was interred in the family lot in Rossville cemetery beside his wife who passed away less than a year ago. Mr. Stanley was born April 16, 1853, in Ohio, and came to Kansas with his parents in 1878. The family located on what was known as the Elmore farm southwest of the city. For many years after the death of his father Col. Stanley, Mr. Stanley lived with his mother in the house formerly on the site of the present H. G. Bond home. Mr. Stanley, was united in marriage to Miss Anna Young of this city, in 1905. Twin children were born to this union February 15, 1908 – Ruth and Reid, who are his sole survivors with the exception of a sister and brother, living in Ohio. The latter through illness were unable to attend the funeral. Mr. Stanly was one of the kindliest gentlemen in the community. His quiet and unassuming life had won for him the high regard of a host of friends. In his business dealings he was liberal and just. His passing is not only a great loss to his two children, but the community has lost a splendid citizen. | 9939 |  | Obituary- Stanley, Amy ROSSVILLE’S OLDEST CITIZEN GONE With the death of Mrs. Amy Stanley, at 7 a.m. last Sunday, the oldest person in Rossville township, and perhaps in the county, passed away. Mrs. Stanley was 95 years, 4 months and 14 days old. For many years Mrs. Stanley has been a shut-in. Her death was caused by injuries received in a fall from her chair in which her side, hip and knee were injured and her great age was against her recovery. Mrs. Stanley has always made her home with the family of her son. A. S. Stanley, who has been greatly devoted to her and left nothing undone for her comfort and welfare. Mrs. Stanley was a native of Ohio. She was born at Athens, Athens county, on January 5, 1823, came to Kansas with her family in 1880 locating at Rossville and making her residence here thirty-eight years. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. J. R. Shaffer, who was assisted by the Revs. A. J. Crawford, of the Presbyterian church, and F. H. Bently, of the Christian church. Interment was made in the family lot in the Rossville cemetery. Mrs. Stanley is survived by three sons, A. S. Stanley of Rossville, Carl Stanley, Albany, Ohio; Eugene Stanley, Danville, Ill., and one daughter, Mrs. Lora E. Fisher, of Toledo, Ohio. | 9940 |  | Obituary- Stanley, Anna Anna Stanley Anna Young Stanley was born at Walshville, Illinois, February 18, 1865, died at her home in Rossville, Wednesday, October 10, 1923, aged 58 years, 7 months and 22 days, after a ten days illness. She had been a resident in this community 45 years, coming to Kansas in 1878 with her parents and living in the old home southwest of Rossville for many years. On October 4, 1905 she was united in marriage to Mr. A. S. Stanley. This union was blessed by two children, Ruth and Reid, twins, who with the husband survive to mourn her loss. Mrs. Stanley’s life had been one of devotion, to her parents and later to her husband and children. She early affiliated with the Christian church and bore her share of the work undertaken by her Church and tried to live daily the principles of Christianity as taught by her faith. She was a member of Amaryllis Chapter, O. E. S. The funeral service held Friday October 12, at 2 p.m. in the Christian church, was conducted by the Rev. G. G. Horne, of Topeka, and interment made in the Rossville cemetery. The pall bearers were Mr. Morris Bond, Mr. H. G. Bond, Mr. C. E. VanVleck, Mr. H. E. Ishmael, Mr. E. D. Hartzell, Mr. Gus Kassebaum. Beside the husband and children, two brothers survive, Mr. O. H. Young, of Rossville and Mr. Elmer Young, of Topeka. She was born October 10, 1904, at Oskaloosa. Mrs. Stanley was a member of Eastside Baptist Church of Topeka and Rebekah Lodge No. 36, IOOF, Cambridge, Nebr., serving there as past noble grand. She was married to John Stanley on January 24, 1946, at Overland, Ks. He survives. A son, Neel Brown, preceded her in death in 1947. | 9942 |  | Obituary- Stanley, Isaac Died, Friday afternoon, April 24th, at his residence in this city, aged 67, Col. I. Stanley. The Colonel had been sick for several weeks, but his death came as a thunder clap upon the village, as but few people had any idea that his end was so near. He was a most exemplary citizen, an upright business man, and a kind husband and father. He was a quiet man, making no loud professions, but laboring persistently to round out his character and build substantially for both worlds. He was born at Athens, Ohio, and came to Kansas in 1880. He leaves behind him six sons and one daughter. The children are scattered through several states, one son, only, remaining at home. Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church last Sunday afternoon, when the Rev. J. G. Mayer preached a funeral discourse, taking as his text Rev. XXI, last clause of 1st verse: - “And there was no more sea.” He explained that the sea, in its extent and its tossings, emblemstized separation, trouble, change and perpetual unrest. Also that the words of the text – “no more sea” – told of a time and a place when and where separation and disquietude will have no part or lot, and where perennial peace and perpetual joy will lave each and every inhabitant. Col. Stanley was a Freemason, and the services were conducted under the auspices of the Order, by request of the deceased. In addition to the members of Hesperian Lodge, a number of Masons from St. Marys, Silver Lake and Topeka were present. The church was crowded with relatives, friends, and members of the Order. The cavalcade and foot procession was one of the longest that ever wended its way to our cemetery. | |

She was the wife of Ernest Lee Stark, husband of 20 years. Jo was born in Topeka, Kansas on November 29,1942 the daughter of T.G. McCall, SR and Juanita Louise McCall. She was a graduate of St. Charles High School, St. Charles, MO. She worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber for over 20 years prior to retirement. Jo had a very strong faith in Christ, and she enjoyed visiting and attending numerous churches and learning about many different faiths. Jo was a friend to everyone and she never met a stranger. Her smile was radiant, and her laughter lit up a room. She also had the kindest heart. She would give the shirt off her back to anyone in need. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and both sons Bobby Dale and Charles “Chip” McLain. She is survived by her husband, Ernie Stark, her friend and former husband Charles McLain (Topeka). Her daughters, LauRay McLain of Topeka, Joi (John) Ridder and Amber (Jeff) Huske of Silver Lake, her stepsons Clifford Stark, Steven (Jennifer) Stark both of California, her sister Virginia (Tim) McCracken, brothers Buddy (Chris) McCall and Tim (Beth) McCall. She leaves behind 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and family who adore her. Every summer for the last twelve years until this year Mr. Starkey had visited his brother Jesse at the E.D. Hartzell home and was quite well known here.
