| 3853 |  | Obituary- Baird, Peggy Peggy L. Conger Baird Peggy L. Conger Baird, 70, Rossville, KS passed away at her home July 1, 2017. She was born October 13, 1946. She graduated from Highland Park High School in 1964. She worked for Rossville City Hall for numerous years, and was also Mayor of Rossville for eight years. She owned the Rossville Liquor Store for fifteen years as well. She married Vernon W Baird in May 1964. He survives. She has one son, Thomas Baird and one daughter, Karla Shafstall (Chad). Four grandchildren, Kiefer, Kayla, and Kody Hurla and Annasha Baird and many great grandchildren. Peggy also loved watching her grand kids participate in sports, playing with her great grand kids, and going to the casino. Graveside services will be held at the Rossville Cemetery July 15, 2017 at 10am. | |

She died Saturday, October 8, 1983, at the home of a relative in Rossville. She was born August 26, 1888, at Rossville, the daughter of John and Belle Marney Oldham. She was a lifelong resident of Rossville. Mrs. Baird was a member of the Rossville Christian Church. She was married to Edward Baird in 1905 at Rossville. He died in June 1938. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Floyd Baird on September 11, 1964, and Vernon Baird on August 24, 1976; and a daughter, Evelyn Paine, on December 11, 1964. Survivors include a son, Charles L. Baird, Neosho, Mo.; four daughters, Mrs. Edna Verhage, Tonganoxie, Mrs. Grace Henneke, Rossville, Mrs. Jean Mee, Goodwell, Okla., and Mrs. Wilma Dolezilek, Rossville; a sister, Mrs. Agnes Kesler, Topeka; 28 grand-children, 65 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren. Casket bearers were grandsons Kent Paine, Vernon Baird Jr., Robert Baird, Don Dolezilek, Charles Dolezilek, and Jim Mee. Burial was in Rossville Cemetery. Relatives and friends met from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Verschelden Funeral Home, St. Marys. Memorial contributions may be made to Jimmie Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion, Rossville. | |

BAIRD Services were at 2 p.m. Friday in the United Methodist Church at Rossville for Vernon W. “Frog” Baird, 70, 3432 Bryant, Topeka, who died Tuesday, August 29, 1976 in a Topeka hospital. He was born May 21, 1906 at Rossville and lived in Topeka since 1925. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a marble setter. He was a member of Hesperian Lodge No. 111, AF&AM, at Rossville and Scottish Rite bodies in Topeka. He also was a member of Jimmy Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion at Rossville, and Local No. 3 of the Bricklayers Union. He was married to Ernestine Sargent on December 23, 1941. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Vernon W. Baird, Jr., Rossville, and George Baird, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Miller, Lincoln, Nebr.; his mother, Mrs. Sadie Baird, Rossville; a brother, Charles Baird, Neosho, Mo.; four sisters, Mrs. Edna Verhage, Tonganoxie, Mrs. Grace Henneke, Houston, Tex., Mrs. Jean Mee, Goodwell, Okla., and Mrs. Wilma Dolezilek, Rossville; and four grandchildren. She was born May 13, 1966, in Denver, the daughter of Edgar Gene and Alice Bacon Lawrence. She lived in Topeka many years before she moved to Scranton last April. He was married to Robert R. Baker Aug. 21, 1987, at Pomona Reservoir. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Robert Ray Baker II and Matthew Don Baker, both at home; three daughters, Ayla Ray Baker, Treas Dawn Baker and Leha Sky Ray Baker, all at home; her mother, Alice Lawrence, Topeka; two brothers, Dennis Lawrence and Gilbert Lawrence, both in Wisconsin; and two sisters, Marsha Wright and Gwen Camarillo, both in Topeka. Services will be at 9 a.m. Friday at Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery in Rossville. Mrs. Baker will lie in state from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Monroe, who died Friday night a few hours after he was admitted to a Topeka hospital. He had a lung ailment. He was born April 21, 1924, in Topeka. He lived in Orange County, Calif., about 10 years and spent the rest of his life in Topeka. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific area. He was a plumbing worker before he retired. Survivors include two sons, Steve L. Baker, Little Rock, Ark., and Gary Baker, Garden Grove, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Linda Moore, Foun-tain Valley, Calif., and Mrs. Karen Sheets; Huntington Beach, Calif.; and his mother, Mrs. Ethel Baker, at home. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. lsabell Reed, 1026 N. Jackson, and Evelyn Baker, 1017 N. Jeanette was born in Topeka to William “Bill” and Alice (Waldo) Smith on July 24th, 1954. She graduated from Rossville High School in 1972. Jeanette is preceded in death by her parents; husband Don Baker; sister Mary Kelly and brother Kenneth Smith. | 3869 |  | Obituary- Baker, Russell Baker Child's Burns Proved Fatal Russell Baker, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Baker died this morning at 1:30, his death being the result of falling in a tub of scalding hot water, Saturday, January 19. The child has suffered terribly since the accident and only under the influence of quieting medicine had he had any moments of rest. The loss of so much skin had made the child's case almost hopeless from the first, but the child's parents have worked night and day trying to relieve the little fellow's sufferings. The funeral arrangements have not been made definitely, because of two deaths from meningitis at St. Marys, and O. Verschelden, the undertaker in charge, was not certain he could be here tomorrow. | 3870 |  | Obituary- Baker- John W. John W. Baker died at his home in the south part of town Monday afternoon from a stroke of paralysis. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon in the Presbyterian Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Nelson, after which the body was interred in the city cemetery. Mr. Baker was stricken with a paralytic stroke at about 9 o'clock last Friday evening at his home. Medical aid was unable to give relief and he lingered in a semi-unconscious condition until Monday afternoon when death came to his release. Mr. Baker was one of the pioneers of Rossville and had an extensive acquaintance. He was an old soldier and the members of the post here were in attendance at the funeral. Mr. Baker leaves a wife, 2 children and 3 step-children to mourn his death. A brother, Thomas B., arrived from Martinsville, Ill., in time for the funeral. Ballard on August 14, 1970, in Topeka. He survives. | 3878 |  | Obituary- Banks, Elaine ELAINE E. BANKS Elaine E. Banks, 70, St. Marys, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, at Lexington Park Center in Topeka. She was born Oct. 6, 1937, at Hanover, the daughter of Jake F. and Edna Mary Louise Schroeder Werner. She spent her early life in the Hanover community then lived in the St. Marys and Maple Hill communities. She and her husband Jim with their family lived on a farm in the Emmett community and Elaine moved back to St. Marys in the early 90s where she lived until moving to Wamego in April 2006. Mrs. Banks graduated from Maple Hill High School and attended Clarks School of Business. After her husband’s death, she received a certificate in accounting from Kaw Valley Vo-Tech in Topeka. Elaine was a great cook at St. Marys Manor. Later she worked for Bayer Stone and Knoll’s Patient Supply. She most recently was an assistant librarian and lead story time at the Pottawatomie-Wabaunsee Regional Library in St. Marys before she retired because of ill health. Elaine was a member of the Emmett United Methodist Church. She had been a Sunday school teacher at the St. Marys United Methodist Church and helped with Noah’s Neighbors in Emmett. She also had been a Girl Scout leader. On July 12, 1957, she was united in marriage to Jimmie “Jim” Banks at Maple Hill. He preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 1987. Survivors include three daughters, Debra “Deb” (Gary) Wulfkuhle, Rossville, Janet (Bill) Rafferty, Emmett and Jane (Keith) McCollum, Olathe; a sister Lorene Richardson, Springfield, Mo.; a brother Robert (Bob) Werner, Grove, Okla.; three granddaughters and three grandsons; one great-granddaughter. | 3879 |  | Obituary- Banks, Estel and Virginia 1 Tragic News To A Rossville Family Mr. and Mrs. Howard Marney and sons Gifford and James Marney and their families left today for Charleston, Mo, called by the death of a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Banks, 25, the serious injury of another daughter, Mrs. Zelma Watson, 22, and the death of sons-in-law, Estle Banks and Don Watson. Estel Banks, shot and killed his wife, Virginia, his brother-in-law Dan Watson, seriously injured Zelma Watson and then killed himself in a fit of rage. All the victims are well known in this community, where the Marney girls were born, and in the Willard Community As we go to press all the details are not known. The shooting took place about 7:30 Wednesday evening, according to Howard Marney, the father. His last word last night about 11 o’clock was that Zelma Watson still was alive. THURSDAY, MAY 18, 1959 DETAILS OF TRIPLE KILLING OF FORMER ROSSVILLE FOLK (From Charleston, Mo., Democrat) Eskel Kindred Banks, 36, formerly of Charleston and now residing in St. Louis, returned here early Wednesday evening and shot his estranged wife, Virginia, 24; Dan Watson, 35; Zelma Watson 22 and before officers could capture him turned his small 25 caliber automatic on himself inflicting a mortal wound all in the presence of their two small children. Banks and his wife had separated numerous times and she had returned to Charleston each time with their two children, Edward Howard Banks, 8 and Estelle Banks, 5. Several weeks ago after receiving a severe beating at the hands of Banks she called her sister, Mrs. Dan Watson and who with her husband drove to St. Louis and brought Mrs. Banks and children to the Watson home here at 503 South First Street During the past two weeks Banks 'had called his wife here several times and tried to effect a reconciliation but without success. He finally called her and stated that he would see that she never got a divorce threatening violence. When this foiled he called Mrs. Dan Watson and threatened her stating that in his Opinion that the Watson’s were responsible for separation and threatened to do her and her husband bodily harm. Banks also called Cecil Watson, brother of the slain man and threatened him and his wife for what he thought was aiding his wife in their separation. Cecil Watson stated that a week ago Banks had called him saying, “I’m coming down to Charleston and you and I are going to settle this matter and it won’t be a fist fight.” Cecil stated that he, as well as Dan, had notified officers here of the threats in an effort to avert a possible tragedy. Last evening at 7:00 p. m. Banks came to the door of the Dan Watson home and his wife finally admitted him. Their small son noticed that he had a gun saying, “Daddy has a gun.” At this point Dan Watson came in and told Banks that if he had a gun to get out of the house. Banks and his wife then started to argue and he shot her as she sat in a chair in the heart. Dan Watson started out after help and his wife called Mrs. Cecil Watson on the phone and asked her to come over that they were having trouble. Before she could finish the conversation Banks turned on her shooting her in the hip. Banks then went out the front door to catch Dan who went out the back of the house and shot him just as he was leaving the porch. Banks then started towards the home of Cecil Watson, some three blocks away apparently intent on killing them. In the meanwhile Mrs. Cecil Watson had called Sheriff J.E. Scott and city officers. Cecil Watson took his gun and started towards the Dan Watson home. Neighbors had also called officers as well as physicians who arrived at the home when Banks was only a short distance from the scene of the shooting. Rather than surrender he shot himself in the heart. By the time Joe Nunnels arrived with the ambulance Mrs. Banks had died as well as Mr. Watson. Banks and Mrs. Watson were taken to the St. Mary’s hospital in Cairo Ill., but Banks died of his injury while on the way. Mrs. Watson was suffering from a bullet wound in the hip and doctors operated on her immediately. Her condition this morning was given as not serious. While it is not known how Banks got to town a stub was found in his pocket showing that he had traveled from St. Louis to Sikeston by bus. A pad of matches also found in his pocket carried the name of a Sikeston restaurant. He apparently had hitchhiked the balance of the distance to Charleston. On December 9, 1873, he was married to Lucy Summers, and to this union were born ten children, two of whom preceded him to the grave. The last few years of his life were spent on a homestead near Sterling, Colorado. For several months he has been in very poor health and in November he came to make his home with his son Floyd. He is survived by one brother, B.R. Banta of Bronson, Kansas; six sons, Floyd, Ross and Sherman, of Delia, Earl of Sterling, Colo., Guy and Elmer of Carl Junction, Mo., two daughters, Mrs. O. F. Survivors include seven children, Jeanette Lister and husband Gerald of Edmond, Okla., Jean Holzmeister and husband Richard of Lawrence, Sally Carnevale of San Mateo, Calif., Susan Nadeau of Shawnee, Michael Nadeau and wife Gay and Dennis Nadeau, all of Rossville; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruby Adams of Portland, Ore. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, four sisters, and two grandchildren. Funeral services were Feb. 19 at Silver Lake United Methodist Church, 204 Madore St., Silver Lake, KS 66539. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service time. She was born July 29, 1926 in Laona, WI, the daughter of Jesse and Evelyn Wally Whitefish Cook. She graduated from Indian Vocational High School in Flandreau, SD in 1945. She worked as a waitress in South Dakota and Savorin Turnpike Restaurant in Topeka, at Stormont Vail Hospital in the laundry department and as an LPN in a nursing home. Julia was a member of the Episcopalian Church and Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. She served on the PBPN election board for 12 years. Julia married Willis Lee Barber. They were later divorced. He preceded her in death in 2008. Julia was also preceded by a son, William Lee Barber in December 2010; a half-sister, Mildred Engles and a great grandson in infancy, Steve Travis Perry, Jr. Julia is survived by her children, Emily Ann Aitkens and Nancy Marie Counts both of Mayetta, Lori Lynn Molina, Jeffrey Scott Barber, Tony Dale Barber and Dwayne Charles Barber all of Delia; a sister, Helen Cantrell of Afton, OK; and brothers, Hal Blakeslee, John Blakeslee and William Blakeslee all of Muskogee, OK; 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. | 3900 |  | Obituary- Barker, Dudley DUDLEY BARKER Dudley J. Barker, 50, of Rt. 1, Manhattan, Kansas, died May 4 at St. John’s Hospital, Salina. Mr. Barker was in poor health for the past year, but had continued to work until two weeks ago. He was born July 26, 1911, in Grassy Creek, Kentucky. He was a welder’s helper for the Union Pacific Railroad for the past twenty years. He was married to Maralee Mileham in Rossville on June 9, 1946. The rosary was recited at 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Verschelden Funeral Home in St. Marys. Funeral services were at 9:00 a. m. Tuesday at the St. Stanislaus Church, Rossville, with burial in Rossville Cemetery. Rev. Edward Thro, S. J., officiated. Mr. Barker is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maralee Barker of the home; two sons, Carl Barker of Silver Lake, Larry Barker of Silver Lake; four grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Bessie Startup, Rossville; two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Sommers, Kansas City, Kansas, and Miss Gladys Barker, Los Vegas, Nevada.
