Obituary- Cowan, Mary 1
Obituary- Cowan, Mary 1
Mary C. Cowan
Rossville-Mary C. Cowan, 69, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the Midland Hospice House on March 11, 2014, after a long, hard fought battle with COPD.
Mary was born in Rossville on December 25, 1944, to Edward and Winifred Yocum Besta. She grew up in the Rossville/Delia area and graduated from Delia High School in 1962.
After staying at home to raise her children, she went to work as a special needs paraprofessional for USD #321 and retired after 20 years of service. She was an active member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville.
Mary enjoyed being active and loved playing softball in her younger years. She enjoyed going fishing with her husband, gardening, sewing, and refinishing antique furniture. There wasn't much she couldn't catch, grow, make or make look new and she was an amazing cook. She would have much rather gone outside to play a game of catch than go shopping any day and for this reason she was the perfect mother for 5 boys. She was extremely patient and had a calming presence about her, a trait that would draw people of all ages to her. Her family was her life and she did not miss any of her son's events as they grew up. She continued to attend many of her grandchildren's events as long as she could. Mary C. Cowan
Mary C. Cowan, Rossville, 69, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the Mid¬land Hospice House on March 11, 2014, after a long, hard-fought battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Mary was born in Rossville on Dec. 25, 1944, to Ed¬ward and Winifred Yocum Besta. She grew up in the Rossville/Delia area and graduated from Delia High School in 1962.
After staying at home to raise her children, she went to work as a special needs paraprofessional for USD 321 and retired after 20 years of service. She was an ac¬tive member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville.
Mary enjoyed being active and loved playing softball in her younger years. She enjoyed going fishing with her husband, gardening, sewing, and refinishing antique furniture. There wasn’t much she couldn’t catch, grow, make or make look new, and she was an amazing cook. She would have much rather gone outside to play a game of catch than go shopping any day and for this reason she was the perfect mother for five boys. She was extremely patient and had a calming presence about her, a trait that would draw people of all ages to her. Her family was her life and she did not miss any of her sons’ events as they grew up. She continued to attend many of her grandchildren’s events as long as she could. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her tremendous joy and were the bright spots on even her darkest days.
Her parents, her stepfather, Clinton Kerwin, a brother, Eddie Besta and a sister, Teresa Marney, preceded Mary in death.
On Oct. 5, 1963, she was united in marriage to Ron Cowan at Sacred Heart Church in Delia. They enjoyed 50 years together. Ron survives of the home.
Other survivors include her five sons, John and his wife, Brigette, of Topeka, Rod and his wife, Deana, of Maple Hill, Kelly of Maple Hill, Kevin and his wife, Val, of Wichita arid Shane and his wife, Kelly, of Allen, Texas; her grandchildren, Tyler, Shelby, Corey, Lacey, Jericka, Annalyn, Kaegan, Shaemus, Grace, Ford, Shanan and Karli; two great-grandchildren, Easton and Tyce; two brothers, Bennie Besta of Rossville and Bob Kerwin and wife Susan of Topeka; her sister, Terri Kerwin of Topeka; a brother-in-law, Bob Marney of Holton; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Besta of Topeka.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 15 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Interment followed in the Rossville Cemetery. Six days after their wedding Kenneth joined the U.S. Army and was sent to Indiantown Gap Military Reservation in Pennsylvania for training. Mary traveled by train from Topeka, Kansas to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in May 1943 to visit him. She stayed on base and in Jonestown, Pennsylvania for one month until Kenneth was sent to California for deployment to New Guinea. After which Mary returned home to stay with her parent’s and in-law’s until Kenneth returned in February 1946.

In addition to being a wife, mother and homemaker Mary provided childcare for several years. Throughout her life she enjoyed dancing, card playing, gardening, and tending her flowers. Mary was a lady and the ultimate housewife, yet she could paint, refinish, upholster, ride a horse bareback, drive a team of horses, milk cows, feed livestock and perform many a household and farm chore.

Most important to Mary was family and faith. She was a caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, daughter, sister, and niece.

Obituary- Cowles, Eleonora
Obituary- Cowles, Eleonora
In Memoriam.
Died at her residence in Adrian, Jackson Co. Kas. on the 2nd inst., after a long and painful illness. Mrs. Eleanora A. wife of J.W. Cowles.

The deceased was born in Elba, Otsego Co., N.Y., April 30th, 1829, and at the age of fourteen she united with the M.E. church, ever after remaining a consistent and honored member.

Married at Kenosha, Wis., July 11, 1848. Her early married life was spent in Wisconsin and Illinois, amid many of the hardships and privations always incident to the settlement of a new country. For many years her home was at Rockton, Ill., where she had a large circle of friends and acquaintances; but it was in the home circle where her influence was the bright guiding star of all the members of the household.

As a wife she was conscientious in the discharge of every duty, in making home the one attractive spot for him whose happiness and temporal welfare was so largely entrusted to her. In the improvement of her children she was deeply interested, and they will ever hold in grateful remembrance her self-denying labors in helping to bestow upon them the advantages of a superior education. Home was the little world in which she lived. She loved to beautify all its surroundings, and over tasked her strength to minister to the wants of those about her.

Eight years ago she suffered from a partial sun stroke, since which time her strength has gradually failed. Removing with her family to this State, two years ago, for a time she was busily employed in active home duties, but for the past year her health has been in a rapid decline. Disease and suffering weakened her mind at the last, a prelude of the final dissolution of the body.

Loving hands ministered to her comfort during her last hours, but care could not stay the summons of the death angle [sic angel].

Her death occasions the first break in the family circle. She leaves a companion and four children who will mourn the absent mother, while her brothers and sisters in a distant State will mourn the eldest gone before.

Although she had lived but a short time in our midst, a large concourse of sympathizing friends and neighbors followed the remains to their last resting place.

She hath done what she could, and although she rests from her labors her works do follow her.
J.P.S.

Obituary- Cox, Sarah E.
Mrs. Cox Dead.
Mrs. T. J. Cox, aged 51 years, 11 months and 19 days, died at her home in this city Friday, Feb. 13, 1903. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. Nelson. Interment took place in the city cemetery.
Sarah Elizabeth Kennedy was born in Kentucky, Feb. 24, 1851. She came to Kansas when a child and was married to Thomas J. Cox. Feb. 24, 1874.
For years she has been a great suf¬ferer. For weeks past her sufferings have been so intense that it was her nightly prayer for the Lord to take her home.
More than 20 years ago she united with the Christian Church and has ever had an unwavering faith in God which has sustained her through all her many trials and enabled her to be cheerful in the midst of intense pain. She was conscious to the last and knew that the end was approaching swiftly. She told her husband that she had lived a happy life and was ready to go. She then calmly waited the coming of her King and at His approach fell to sleep as sweetly as when a child she nestled on her mother’s breast. She knew by experience what the psalmist meant when he said: “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” With Paul we exclaim: “O death, where is thy sting! O grave, where is thy victory!”
A beautiful memorial of Mrs. Cox, which was received too late for this issue will appear in the NEWS next week.—ED.

Word reached here Monday morning that Mrs. T. J. Cox had died at 8:40 a.m. at the home of her daughter in St. Joe, Mo. The funeral was held Wednesday in that city. Mrs. Cox was a former resident of Rossville and the wife of ex-postmaster Cox. The relatives have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.

Thomas J. Cox
Thomas J. Cox, of Laurel, Ind. a former citizen of Rossville township, and at one time postmaster of Rossville, died last Thursday at Valley Falls where he had been visiting relatives. The body was brought to Rossville Sunday and interment made in the family lot. No church services were held here but the Hesperian Lodge, No. 111, of which Mr. Cox was a member, conducted services at the grave. After leaving Rossville to live in Indiana, Mr. Cox has made frequent visits here and at Silver Lake where he had purchased a farm. About three weeks ago he came to Valley Falls to live with a niece, after physicians had informed him he was suffering with cancer of the bladder. After arriving he was stricken with a stroke of paralysis which hastened his death. Mr. Cox was a veteran of the civil war and was in his 78th year.
