FIRE CLAIMS LIFE OF SMALL CHILD JUNE 2
Stephen Louis Evers, 18-month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Evers, Holts Summit, Mo., was burned to death following an explosion in the basement of the family home. The baby’s mother is the former Connie Eastman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ward, Delia, Ks. Mrs. Frances Marney, Rossville, is a maternal grandmother.
The explosion occurred about 3:30 p.m. Friday, when Evers was in the basement with his son working with a gasoline lawnmower, according to the State Highway Patrol. The lawnmower apparently exploded and flames from the gasoline spread quickly throughout the one-story frame dwelling.
Evers reportedly rushed out of the basement safely but then realized his little boy was trapped in the flames. He was badly burned after returning to rescue the child, according to his wife, who was upstairs at the time of the explosion.
Mrs. Evers drove the two in the family car to a mobile home sales office nearby, where an ambulance was called. The owner of the mobile home firm then notified the patrol and the New Bloomfield, Mo., volunteer fire department, which responded to the blaze about 45 minutes later.
The home was engulfed by flames shortly after the firemen arrived and all their possessions were lost in the fire.
Roger Evers, 30, was listed in critical condition Saturday at the University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia where he was taken.
Funeral services were held for the baby on Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Dulle Funeral Home.
He was born September 24, 1971, at Jefferson City.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Robert Gene Evers of the home; his
maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ward, Delia; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Frances Marney, Rossville; his maternal great grandmother, Mrs. Iona Ward, Fair Dealing, Mo.; and his maternal great, great grandmother, Mrs. Rose Marney, Topeka.

Obituary- Eversole, George
Obituary- Eversole, George
Eversole
George W. Eversole, son of John H. and Mary A. Eversole, was born at Peabody, Kansas, February 15, 1895. At the time he departed this life he was 31 years, 8 months and 13 days old.
He spent a few years of his boyhood in Arkansas, coming to Rossville when 16 years old. On November 10, 1920, he was married to Mabel A. Binns, who with two little daughters, Patricia Lee and Frances, survive him. One little daughter having preceded him in infancy, the other surviving relatives are: his mother, Mrs. J. H. Eversole, three sisters, Mrs. L.P. Hartzell and Mrs. Riley Wood of Rossville and Mrs. J.A. Roush, of Albuquerque, N.M., and one brother, John of Pocatello, Idaho.
George united with the Methodist church of Rossville in young manhood.
He engaged in various lines of work in Rossville then became a tool dresser in the oil fields. At the time of his departure on October 28, 1926 he was living in El Dorado, Kansas. He could not survive the shock of an appendicitis operation.
George was a merry, lovable boy who won friends wherever he went. This last fact was very strongly shown in El Dorado by the deeds of kindness and words of sympathy from his associates there.
George was a devoted son, to his aged mother and an unusually strong family tie bound him to his three sisters and his one brother. He was a kind and thoughtful husband and father.
He was industrious and honest and one of his greatest comforts was the fact that he was leaving $5,000 old line insurance to his wife and babies.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. Berg of the Presbyterian church, Sunday, October 31, at 2:30, at the home of F. N. Binns. The body was laid to rest in the Rossville cemetery.
The large gathering of friends and relatives and the beautiful floral offerings spoke forcibly of the high esteem in which George was held and of the sympathy for his family.
George Eversole passed away at 3 o’clock this morning in an El Dorado hospital, following an operation last Saturday for appendicitis.
News of his death was a shock to his Rossville relatives and friends.
The relatives received work about 11 o’clock last night that his condition had changed for the worse and his mother and sisters, Mrs. J.H. Eversole, Mrs. L.P. Hartzell and Mrs. Riley Wood, accompanied by Mr. F. N. Binns, reached Topeka in time to leave on the midnight train but too late to see George alive.
Mrs. L.P. Hartzell and Mrs. F.N. Binns went to El Dorado Friday. The former returned Tuesday when his condition was so favorable and no complications were anticipated. Mrs. Binns remained with her daughter, Mrs. Eversole.
The shock to the nervous system was too great and his heart become bad at 9 o’clock Wednesday night. Mrs. Eversole was with him from 9 o’clock until the end came.
The body will be brought to Rossville Friday morning. The funeral will be held Saturday at 2:30 at the F.N. Binns home if the relatives succeed in locating Mr. John Eversole, a brother who arrived in Texas last week but whose present address in unknown.

J.H. Eversole Passed Away Last Thursday
J.H. Eversole passed away at 5:45 last Thursday evening after an illness of about two years, from a cancer which started on the lip. Mr. Eversole had been steadily sinking for the past two months and for the past two weeks the family had looked for the end at any moment. Mr. Eversole bore his affliction with great fortitude his last moments being made as comfortable as the loving hands of his family could make him. John Eversole, the oldest son arrived on the morning of the day of the father’s decease, all the family being at his bedside when death came.
John Horatio Eversole was born near Mitchell, Indiana, April 11, 1857, being 60 years, 1 month and 6 days old when death came. On November 12, 1878 he was united in marriage to Mary A. McNab. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Eversole, five of whom are living.
Mr. and Mrs. Eversole first came to Kansas in 1884, locating in Marion county at Peabody where they remained until 1903 when they moved to Lowell, Ark. After living there nine years they came to Rossville.
The surviving members of his family beside his widow are, Mrs. J. H. Roush, of Albuquerque, N. Mex., Mrs. L.P. Hartzell, George Eversole and Glayds Eversole of Rossville, and John J. Eversole, of Pocatello, Idaho. Of the three children gone on before two died in infancy and one just in the fullness of beautiful womanhood. There are four grandchildren. One brother at Mitchell, Ind., was unable to attend the funeral because of sickness.
Mr. Eversole was a member of the M.W.A. for twenty-five years and a member of the Court of Honor. He was also a member of the M.E. church and his funeral was held at the Rossville M.E. church, Saturday, May 19, at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. W. T. Ward. Interment was made in the Rossville cemetery.
An Appreciation – Because of the anxiety occasioned to the family by the accident to John Eversole, so closely following the death of his father many things were necessarily neglected.
We take this means of thanking the M.E. church, High school, Ladies Club and Woodman Lodge, whose members we cannot reach separately, for the beautiful floral offerings in memory of J.H. Eversole. The many beautiful individual offerings have been acknowledged individually.
Our hears overflow with gratitude to the people of Rossville for their kindness to us during all of our trouble.
Mrs. J.H. Eversole and family

Obituary- Fairbanks, George
Obituary- Fairbanks, George
NAVY VET KILLED IN PASTURE TRAGEDY
Spill with Horse Is Fatal for One of 6 Brothers, All Tars.
George Fairbanks, one of the six sailor sons of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fairbanks who got nation-wide notice in World War II, was killed Nov. 27 in an alfalfa field west of Emmett.
The horse which he was riding apparently at a gallop, stepped into a gopher hole to turn end over end – crushing the lad’s body and fracturing his skull.
The tragedy occurred near Emery Johnson’s ranch, on the old Phil Joyce quarter-section, a “spread” which the ex-seaman had purchased out of the savings from his service pay.
Just as it had four millions who responded to the colors, the threat of war had meant risks for the young Cross Creek cowman. But death in combat had not been his lot.
Death just as violent was reserved for him back home, the day before Thanksgiving, in the serenity of the wide-open spaces he always cherished. The tragedy was [missing part] pastoral scene that had promised all a farm-reared youth could ask of the future – a place he could call his own, in the peace and solitude of God’s outdoors. George would have said that it just couldn’t happen there.
He had even bought a horse for himself – a big, black stallion full of ginger and throbbing vitality. Prouder than he could ever say of his mount, the young ex-serviceman was never happier than when wearing his boots and spurs and racing down a draw to round up a string of mares. This was the job he loved and the job he was doing the last hour of his life.
The body was discovered by a passing motorist as it lay near a fence on the road leading to the bombing range. The stallion stood a hundred yards away, virtually unharmed. It was shortly before noon when the stranger notified a neighbor, Fritz Johnson.
George’s death is the second to be recorded among members of the naval sextette in his family. The first, a gold star sacrifice, was that of his brother, Douglas, who gave his life in the Battle of the Casper Straits, near Java.
At the special request of Frank Knox, Secretary of the Navy, Mother Fairbanks traveled to San Francisco in the summer on 1942 to christen the USS Chickasaw.
[missing rest]
