Obituary- McCleery, Frank
Obituary- McCleery, Frank

Frank McCleery
The last of the McCleery men to live in the McCleery timber died Monday night, May 6, the victim of his third stroke.

He was Frank McCleery, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sam McCleery, pioneer settlers of the earliest 1870’s The latter passed away in December, 1938, at the age of 95 years. The former died in 1926 at the age of 88.

Frank McCleery was called to his Maker in the 65-year-old home of his parents, part of which was a log building they had purchased from the Indians. It is located two miles southeast of St. Marys, back in the woods a quarter-mile from the Sandy Hook road, known in the earlier days as Mission Lane.

Frank was 68 years old and a native of Pottawatomie county, having been born April 21, 1872, near St. Clere. Of a retiring disposition, his acquaintance was not wide among the younger generation, but the respect in which he was held by his neighbors was attested during his final illness. A great traveller in his youth, Frank was a nature lover to his last days. He would roam the timberlands and often sought relaxation along the banks of the Kaw. He was an inveterate reader, too, and never failed to devote a few minutes each day to a perusal of the Bible.

He is survived by his widow, Blanche Gutshall McCleery whom he married April 14, 1921, and by two daughters, Mary, 15, and Lucille 13. He is also survived by two brothers, Walter of Rossville, and James, of Kansas City; and Mrs. Jennie Nightwine of North Topeka.

Pallbearers were Ernest and Achille Ronsse, Henry Stockman, Fred Hesse Clarence Yocum and Charles Berkey. Funeral services were at the Feebler Funeral Home, North Topeka, with burial in Rochester cemetery, North Topeka.—St. Marys Star.

Clyde McCollough Killed In Collision
It was a terrible shock to the people of this community when the news was received of the death of Clyde McCollough early Monday evening.
"Salty", a nick-name attached to Clyde when a youngster, is better known to his friend and acquaintances than his given name.
He was enroute to Topeka about 6:30 Monday evening when a collision with a westbound car from Kansas City, occurred a short distance east of the Menoken road on Highway 40.
Bob Rawlings, local businessman, enroute to Independence stopped as he passed the scene and gave a helping hand. He identified Clyde.
It took some time for an ambulance to arrive but Clyde passed away enroute to a hospital.
The others injured in the crash were Mr. and Mrs. William Donigan and their three children. Mr. Donigan suffered a chest injury and injuries to his right hip. A son Jimmy 6, had a fractured leg. Mrs. Donigan suffered from shock and injuries to her jaw and forehead. The other children suffered only minor injuries. The family was headed for Greenleaf, Ks. to spend Christmas.
Clyde, a part owner of the Massey-Harris store in Rossville was noted as a rustler and had a wide acquaintance among farmers. He was also owner of Mack's Bar-B-Q.
Educated in the Rossville schools, he graduated from RHS in 1931. Following a few years as operator of an implement store at Alma, services at the Air Force Supply depot at Topeka during World War II, he returned to Rossville to be a partner with Henry Cerny as Massey-Harris district distributing center. Later, Cerny sold his interests to McCollough and LaVerne Spears, the present owners.
"Salty" was extremely popular and a hustler after business.
He was born in this community, January 24, 1912, and did just a few days short of his 39th anniversary.

DIED - Isaac McCollough died Monday, August 6th, at 9. a.m., at his home 2 1/2 miles north of Rossville, aged 48 years, 10 months, and 28 days. The services were held at the house Tuesday at 3 p.m. and were conducted by Elder Huffman, of Lecompton, whose discourse was taken from Phil. 1:23; "For I am in a state betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better." His remarks were well chosen and were spoken with an earnestness which sank deep into the hearts of the listeners. Isaac McCollough was born in Holmesville, Ohio, Sept. 8, 1845. He had been a member in good standing of the U.B. church of his place for 15 years, and was in every way a thorough christian man. He was highly respected by every one, being an honest, upright citizen. We have met him at his home and upon the streets and have always found him gentlemanly in conduct, and loyal in principles. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his sudden departure. Knowing as we do, the sorrow of the striken household, we sincerely sympathize with them in this their hour of bereavement.

John McConnell Victim In Another Tragic Death
John McConnell, aged 42 years, died at 5 o'clock Tuesday evening in a Topeka hospital, from injuries received at 10:30 Monday evening at the Rossville cattle yards.

The accident occurred while McConnell was assisting F.P. McCollough, manager of the Mulvane ranch, and [ ] Olson, a fellow employee, in loading hogs and cattle for shipment to Kansas City. Others present were Floyd Cless, Leon James, "Bill" James and C.M McPherson.

After filling a car the gate at the bottom of the loading chute was closed. An unruly steer ran back into the chute and McConnell climbed in to drive it back to the car. When more cattle entered the chute McConnell sough safety by climbing on the chute gate and was nearly at the top when a steer attempting to jump the gate struck him knocking him into the chute. It is not known whether his fatal injuries were received from this steer or after he fell into the chute. Mr. McCollough, at great risk to himself drove the cattle back to the car.

McConnell received internal injuries and his spine was injured so severely his sense of feeling was paralyzed, although he was able to talk after being removed from the chute. Dr. Miller was summoned at once and the injured man was taken to a Topeka hospital where he was operated on Tuesday in an attempt to save his life. There was slight chance, and he passed away Tuesday evening.

Mr. McConnell had been an employee on the Mulvane ranch, off and on, for the past twenty years. He has been the victim of numerous accidents during his stay, the most severe being one about two years ago when he cut his hand while sawing wood with a power saw which resulted in the loss of a thumb after months disability when blood poisoning set in. One the evening of his death while driving the cattle in from the ranch, the cattle became unruly and while off his horse helping straighten them out, fellow workers report McConnell made the remark jokingly the cattle would yet be the cause of his death. The remark was made after he was compelled to mount his horse to prevent being rushed.

He was a member in good standing in the Woodman and Security Benefit lodges.

Mr. McConnell is survived by his wife and three young children, three brothers, James, of St. Mary, Robert, who lives in Arizona, and George, of Rossville. The latter is the father of the child burned to death here three weeks ago; one sister, Mrs. Jane Swartz of Harrisburg, Pa.

Pending the arrival of the latter, who is not due to arrive until Friday night, because of a delay in receiving a telegram, the funeral will not be held until Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the Presbyterian church.

The body was brought from Topeka today and taken to the home on the Mulvane ranch west of Rossville.

Obituary- McConnell, Rosa
Oil Can Explodes; Child Burned to Death
Rosa Lema McConnell, the thirteen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George McConnell, died at 9 o’clock' Monday evening, the victim of the saddest and most tragic accident that has occurred here in years.
The explosion of an oil can, held by the child, covered her with a blazing mass of oil and be¬fore her burning clothing could be torn from her body she was burned so terribly death came mercifully about three hours later.
The accident occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Trahoon in the Southwest part of town, at 5:80 Monday. Little Rosa, who is a sister of Mrs. Trahoon, returned from town about four o’clock with a gallon of oil in a five gallon can. Mrs. Trahoon started a fire in the cook dove at 5 o’clock and busied herself with preparations for supper. While Mrs. Trahoon was peeling potatoes, Rosa looked in the stove and thought the fire was out. She lifted the can over the uncovered hole and poured in a quantity of oil and a terrific explosion shook the houses in the neighborhood.
The child was a mass of flames in an instant and she ran scream¬ing from the house out into the street. John Quirk, a neighbor, dashed out of his home and caught the little girl and rolled her on the ground trying to tear the burning clothing from her body. Neighbors brought quilts and she was taken to the home of John Lillard where Dr. Miller gave emergency treatment and she was later brought to the parents home on Navarre street.
The house was not greatly damaged, although the fire department responded to the alarm. Mrs. Trahoon suffered only a few minor burns on her hands and arms.
The child is one of nine child¬ren of Mr. and Mrs. George McConnell, and the first death in the family. She was born at St. Marys, January 25, 1909. Mr. McConnell is a hard-working laborer and hardput to provide for his large family. The sympathy of the community was deeply touched by the sad event and a subscription paper was passed about town to raise funds for the family’s aid. Harvey Divine raised $135.25 and other gifts direct to the family of $12.50 brought to total to $147.75. A lot in the cemetery was pur¬chased and the funeral expenses paid and the balance left was turned over to the family.
Funeral services were held yesterday morning at 10:00 at the Catholic church conducted by Father McNeive. Four girls— Maggie McGrew, Irene Murray, Dorothy DeGraff and Verna Burns were the pallbearers. The body was laid to rest in Ross¬ville cemetery. Beside the parents little Rosa is survived by two brothers and six sisters.
