 | Obituary- Partello, Elizabeth Mrs. Partello Dead
The grim reaper thrust his cycle again into the community of Rossville and gathered another of its oldest settlers. Mrs. E. A. Partello, who came to Rossville in 1868, and has dwelt here ever since, died on the morning of December 13th 1910, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dr. H. H. Miller, after an illness of only two weeks.
Her maiden name was Elizabeth Ann Wyatt. She was born at Gossport Indiana, October 28th, 1838. In 1852 she became a resident of Hartford, Iowa, where she lived until 1862. On New Years day, of 1862, she became the wife of Mr. E. E. Partello, and a few months later they went west to Kansas. While still living at Hartford she at one time helped to prepare food for escaping slaves from the South at one of the stations of the historic “underground railway” system. And while living in Brown county, Kansas, in 1863 the days of guerrilla warefare, one night after the day in which Mr. Partello had sold some cattle and received the money for them, their new made home in this new country, was attacked by a guerrilla band. Mrs. Partello saved her husband’s life by placing herself between him and the gun in the hands of the guerrilla leader. She recognized this leader as being their nearest neighbor and her testimony afterwards sent him for a long term of years to the penitentiary.
Of her life of seventy-two years, one month and sixteen days, forty-two years were lived in Rossville. During these years here her experiences were mixed with both joy and sadness. Of a family of seven children she had the joy and privilege of mothering two daughters and two sons into womanhood and manhood, and she had a mother’s grief in having three of her children taken from her by death. On December 1903 she entered the shadow of a wife’s sorrow in the death of her husband. Having lived here so long and her family were everywhere well known and a large circle of friends are the result of these years of acquaintanceship.
Besides her two sons and two daughters, two sisters and two brothers, still survive her. These together with many other relatives and a host of friends, deeply morn her departure, but find consolation in the fact that she died in the faith, for at the age of fourteen years she united with the Little Mound Baptist church in Indiana, and was a member of the Baptist church at Holton, Kansas, at the time of her death.
Rev. John H. Lamb, of the Presbyterian church officiated at the funeral service, which was held at the home of Dr. H.H. Miller, Wednesday afternoon December 14th 1910. Many neighbors and friends crowded the home to pay their last tribute to their departed.
After the service at the home the body was put in its last resting place in the Rossville cemetery.

 | Obituary- Patton, Charles W. OBITUARY.
We are sorry to have to record the decease of one of our very worthy citizens, Charles Patten [sic Patton], who died last Friday morning, aged 46. Mr. Patten has been in poor health for several years, suffering from a complication of diseases, ending with dropsy. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his departure. Funeral services were held at the M.E. church Saturday afternoon, at which time the Rev. F.S. Allman officiated, basing his remarks upon a clause of the 12th verse of the 27th chapter of Isaiah: "And ye shall be gathered one by one." The reverend gentleman said people sometimes wondered that families were called upon to pass into the eternal world one by one, as individuals - not in family groups. After showing that from the cradle to the grave God persistently deals with us as individuals, it being part of His settled plan, he commended trust and confidence in One "who is too wise to err and too good to be unkind," and enjoined belief in the Master, who declared that What we know not now we shall know hereafter. During the service the choir sang several hymns that they had selected for the occasion. The remains were deposited in the Rossville cemetery, Undertaker Somers being in charge.

 | Obituary- Patton, James Killed By A U.P. Train
James Patton Was Sleeping on the Tracks Near Rossville, Kansas.
James Patton, of Rossville, Kan., was struck by No. 1 Union Pacific train and instantly killed early Sunday morning. Patton was asleep on the railroad track west of the depot at Rossville. The fireman of the train noticed him as the train approached, but his warning to the engineer was too late. The train struck the man, knocking him a hundred feet and causing instant death.
The train was stopped and trainmen picked up the dead man and took him to his home. Patton was a single man. Dr. J.M. Amis acting county coroner, was called to see the man immediately after the accident.
"No reason could be found for the man being on the track," said Dr. Amis. "No blame can be attached to the engineer of the train as he did not see the man."
No inquest was held over the body as there was no blame attached to the accident.

 | Obituary- Paulsen, Michael Michael "Mike/Moose" Paulsen
Michael, "Mike/Moose" Paulsen, 52, of Rossville, passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at his rural Rossville home, surrounded by his family.
He was born January 28, 1969, in Manhattan KS, and grew up in the Saint Marys community. He was a graduate of Saint Marys High School in 1987. He attended Junior College at Butler Community College in Eldorado KS, meeting several individuals who would become life-long friends, and he subsequently graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor's degree in Physical Science. Mike worked in and around the Topeka and St Marys communities for most of his life. Payless Cashaways, Hydro-Flex Corp., and Custom Woods Products. He began his career with Westar at the Jeffery Energy Center, which later merged to become Every, Inc. Mike's declining health ultimately forced him to stop working.
Mike often said that the best thing in his life was getting married to his wife, Marian (Zeller) Paulsen on Oct 8, 2005. She survives of the home with their two children, Michaela Raye (Wade) Paulsen and Bradley Michael Paulsen. He is also survived by his mother, Carolyn Paulsen (Rossville), his sister, Kim York, Rossville, his brother, Claude "Rusty" (Patty) Paulsen, Silver Lake, and multiple nieces and nephews.
Although diagnosed in 2016 with colon cancer, God blessed Mike with an additional five years to enjoy the hobbies he loved and to cherish the remaining moments with family and friends. Mike said he figured the battle with cancer ended in a draw; that cancer didn't win. Rather, his passing stopped it in its tracks, preventing further growth. Mike enjoyed pretty much everything automotive related, to include exploring junkyards looking at old cars (some of which made the trip home to the chagrin of his wife). As much as she put on that these old "projects" bothered her, she was his biggest supporter and assistant financier, overseeing the project costs and occasional overruns. He also enjoyed camping and fishing with friends whenever he could. Mike did not know a stranger and would do anything for anyone.
Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville, KS. Interment followed at West Lawn Memorial Gardens in Topeka.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the wonderful care and support given by the team of staff at the Cotton O'Neil Oncology and Palliative Care clinics, as well as Midland Hospice. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Paulsen Children's Education Fund and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, Kansas 66536. |
