| 7902 |  | Obituary- McBurney, Charles Charles McBurney dies during hunting trip Charles McBurney of Topeka collapsed and died Saturday of an apparent heart attack while pheasant hunting near Colby, Kansas. He was the father of Floyd McBurney, formerly of Rossville and now of Council Grove, Kansas. Mr. McBurney was born January 14, 1890, at Seneca. He had been a Topeka resident since 194_. He was a retired refrigeration engineer. Survivors include four sons, Charles McBurney of Topeka, Floyd McBurney of Council Grove, Loyd McBurney of Overbrook, and Donald McBurney stationed with the U. S. Navy at San Diego, California; three daughter, Mrs. Lola Lyons of Topeka, Mrs. Verla Tunison, Warner Robins, Ga., and Mrs. Mildred Humphries of Emporia; 16 grandchildren; two brothers and three sister. Services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday in Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary in Topeka with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery. | |

McCaine, 64, Kansas City, who died Thursday at her home. She was born July 15, 1915, at Rossville, Kan., and had lived in Kansas City for 30 years. Mrs. McCaine was a nurse at Bethany Medical Center, Kansas City, until she retired in 1974. She was a member of the Methodist Church, Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ararat Shrine Auxiliary. She married Frank McCaine March 8, 1952, in Kansas City, Kan. He survives. Other survivors include six sisters, Mrs. Ruby Freel, Mrs. Mary Eggleston and Mrs. Melba Ziegler, all of Topeka, Doris Bixby, Rossville, Mrs. Juanita Stephenson, Rimrock, Ariz., and Mrs. Vernadell Macha, Delia, Kan.; and a brother, Oscar Bixby, Rossville. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery. Mrs. McCaine will lie in state from 2 until 4 p.m. Monday at the chapel. She was born in Rossville, the daughter of Albert and Rosa Bixby, and had lived in the Kansas City area 30 years. Mrs. McCaine had been a nurse at Bethany Medical Center before she retired in 1974. She was a Methodist and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Ararat Shrine Auxiliary. | 7906 |  | Obituary- McCardle, Goldie Death of Goldie (Mowers) McCardle It was with a shock the news was received Monday that Mrs. Goldie McCardle had died suddenly while in a physicians office at Topeka where she had gone to have an operation performed, Mrs. McCardle was well known to the people of Rossville, having worked hero for several years as central at the telephone exchange Mrs. McCardle has not been well for some time anti was being treated by a Topeka physician. It. was decided that she would have to be operated upon and it was while having an anaesthetic administered that she passed away without a warning. Mrs. McCardle was 27 years old and is survived by her husband, Floyd McCardle and one child and her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Mowers, of Silver Lake. Interment was made in the Silver Lake cemetery. | |

She was born Jan. 27,1915, in Delia, the daughter of Michael B. and Elisabeth C. Salisbury Hurla. She had lived in the Auburn and Carbondale areas the past 43 years. Mrs. McCarter was a member of the Catholic church. She married Arthur Marshall McCarter on Aug. 8, 1932, in Delia. He died Sept. 16, 1964. Mrs. McCarter also was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Shaun A. McCarter, in 1990. Survivors include three daughters, Dolores L. Weekley, Carbondale, and Mary E. Dewey and Anna Mae Lucas, both of Topeka; six sons, Arthur W. McCarter, James C. McCarter and Joseph A. McCarter, all of Topeka, Jerald B. McCarter, Auburn, Michael A. McCarter, Carbondale, and Charles E. | 7909 |  | Obituary- McCarter, Terrill 2 HOLTON MEN DIE IN CRASH HOLTON – Two Holton youths were killed in a one-vehicle accident Thursday on a county road two miles north and 1 ½ miles west of Holton. The Kansas highway Patrol identified them as Terrell E. McCarter, 20, and Dennis D. DeVader, 19. Further details of the accident were not available. Terrell Eugene McCarter, son of Epoe and Ione King McCarter, Route 1, Holton, was born Sept. 3, 1954, in Jackson County. He had lived all his life in the Holton community. He was graduated from Holton High School in 1973 and had been a welder at BMB Co. at Holton for 14 months. Survivors besides his parents, include a sister, Mrs. Betty Heward, Holbrook, Ariz.; a brother, Mark E. McCarter of the home and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey King, Holton. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Mercer Funeral Home, Holton, with burial in Holton Cemetery. Dennis Dean DeVader, son of Francis E. and Edna Martin DeVader, was born Sept. 11, 1955, at Topeka. He had lived most of his life in the Holton community. He was graduated from Holton High School in 1974 and had just started work at the BMB Co. at Holton. He was a member of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church at Holton. Survivors, besides his parents, include three sisters, Mrs. Janice Heslop, 1900 W. Lyman, Topeka, Mrs. Ingrid Olson, Westminster, Calif., and Lisa Diane DeVader of the home; five brothers, Dan E. DeVader, Wetmore, Henry DeVader, stationed with the Navy in Hawaii and Peter E. DeVader, Douglas W. DeVader and Martin J. DeVader, all of the home, and grandparents, Mrs. Ines DeVader, Holton, and Mrs. Edith Martin, Rossville. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, with burial in the Mount Calvary Cemetery west of Holton. He was born January 1,1933, in Rossville, KS, the son of Arthur Marshall and Monica (Hurla) McCarter. He was a graduate of Topeka High School. Mr. McCarter was employed by the City of Topeka for 59 years, retiring in 2010. He served in the Army National Guard in Topeka for 43 years until retiring in 1993. He was a member of Topeka Jayhawk Club and served as a volunteer usher at the University of Kansas Athletics. He was a Boy Scout Leader, Little League Baseball and Basketball Coach and had served as PTA President for State Street Elementary. Bill married Shirley Creech on May 3, 1953, in Topeka. She preceded him in death on October 7, 2003. Survivors include his children, Linda Baxley, Eugene, OR, Carolyn (Jerry) McCart, Terry (Brenda) McCarter, Brett (Lisa) McCarter, all of Topeka; four grandchildren, Jason Evendorf, Morgan Unrein, Tara Prockish and Janelle Evendorf; 7great-grandchildren; five brothers, Joe, Jim, Jerry, Mike and Charlie McCarter, and two sisters, Dolores “Sis” Weekley and Anna Mae Lucas. | 7911 |  | Obituary- McCartney, James James W. McCartney James W. McCartney, 73, of Chanute, a former Rossville resident, died Monday in an Osawatomie hospital. He was born at Wichita, July 6, 1876. He had operated hotels at Kingman and Parsons until his retirement in 1946, when he moved to Chanute. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen at Rossville. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Sarah Olive McCartney, of the home, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. this Thursday at Parker Mortuary, in Topeka, with burial in Rossville Cemetery. Mr. McCartney was a brother-in-law of F. P. McCollough of Rossville. In appreciation of the many deeds of kindness and the beautiful flowers in expression of sympathy; to Rev. Rundus, the musicians and Parker Mortuary. Sarah Olive McCartney, The McCollough Families, Richard Ackerman and Family, Duane Ackerman and Family J. W. MCCARTNEY James William McCartney was born in Wichita, Kansas, on July 6, 1876, and departed this life on April 17th, 1950, at the age of 73 years, 9 months and 11 days. He was married on October 28th, 1903, to Sarah Olive McCollough at the McCollough home near Rossville. Rev. Nelson of the Rossville Presbyterian Church was the officiating minister. For some time Mr. McCartney was engaged in survey engineering. In 1928 he and his wife went into the hotel business at Kingman, Kansas, where they resided until 1937. They located and entered the same business at Parsons, Kansas, where they remained until the year of 1946 when they retired and moved to Chanute, Kansas. Mr. McCartney made many contacts thru the Hotel Assn., and formed many friendships, being a staunch believer in the Golden Rule which he also practiced. He was always interested in Christian work, channeled mostly through the Presbyterian Church. Ministers were always frequent visitors and guests in their home, especially the Rev. Dr. Shaw of Chanute. Mr. McCartney was a patient, uncomplaining sufferer for the past three years when he became afflicted with an artrial disease. After becoming too ill to be any longer cared for by his faithful wife, he was taken to a hospital where death finally released him from his suffering. He is survived by his wife, four nephews, four nieces and a host of friends. The body was brought to Rossville Wednesday, April 19th for burial in the city cemetery. | |

She was a member of Nativity Catholic Church, Noel. She was a Citizens Band Potawatomi Indian. Her husband, Bill McCarty, died June 15, 1970. Survivors include a son, Eldon Darnell, Mayetta, Kan.; a sister, Anna Moore, Elk City, Okla.; and four grandchildren. Burial will be in Lanagan Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the Ozark Funeral Home in Anderson, Mo. Sherer [sic Shearer], in Rossville, Tuesday, January 22, Mrs. Catharine McCarty, aged 100 years. Catharine McCarty was born in Drumleague Parish, County of Cork, Ireland. She was the mother of five children, four girls and one boy, who still survive her. She united with the Episcopalian church when quite young and remained a faithful christian to the last. She lived to see five generations of children. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C.N. Riggles, pastor of the Rossville M.E. Church. He had worked on projects over the nation including the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Mo., and the bridges for Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pa. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was born June 22, 1932, near Neodesha, the son of Carl Franklin and Nannie Cleo Staton McCarty and attended Neodesha schools. He lived in Burlingame since 1987. Mr. McCarty was a member of Pipe Fitters Union, Local No. 363, in Hutchinson and Cecil J. Meeker Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No 1654 in Chanute. He was married to Katherine Warfel in 1981 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Kristi Laney, Bristol, Colo.; two sons, Rick McCarty and Scott McCarty, both of Moline; two stepdaughters, Teresa Hammer, Wichita, and Nancy Huff, Oil City, Pa.; a stepson, Harry Hammer III, Topeka; his mother, Nannie McCarty, Ozark, Mo.; two sisters, Margaret Jaynes, Topeka, and Mary Jo Frazer, El Dorado; two brothers, Don McCarty, Sparta, Mo., and Harold McCarty, Cedar Vale; and eight grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Federated Church in Burlingame. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery in Rossville. He was married to the former Amy Akins. She survives. A foster son, Eldon Darnell, Atchison, also survives. Burial will be in Mayetta Cemetery. McCauley, 82, El Dorado, who died Sunday, March 23, 1980, at a Wichita hospital. He was born November 7, 1897, at Rossville, the son of Samuel and Lucy Lemon McCauley. Mr. McCauley owned and operated a clothing store in Medicine Lodge before moving to El Dorado in 1942. He was a member of Frist United Methodist Church, Patmos Lodge No. 97, AF&AM, and Captain Edgar Dale Post No. 81 of the American Legion, all of El Dorado. He married Pearl Behr May 29, 1921, at El Dorado. She died in 1973. He later married Ellen Bybee March 5, 1979. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Gwendolyn Brown, College Park, Md.; a son, James McCauley, El Dorado; a sister, Mrs. Mildred Clarke, Maple Hill; five grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. McCLAIN Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Ocean Springs, Miss., for Brett Jeffery McClain, 12, Ocean Springs, who died Saturday, January 2, 1982, at Ochsner's Clinic, New Orleans, where he was taken Christmas Day after he became ill at home. Authorities said the death certificate indicated the boy caught a common cold that affected his heart muscles and caused his death. Brett McClain was born April 15, 1969, at Chicago. He was a seventh grade student at Ocean Springs Junior High School where he was a member of the football and baseball teams. He also was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Ocean Springs. She was born April 25,1891, at Elk Fork, Kentucky. She had lived in Rossville since 1923. She was married to Roy McClain in 1910 in Kentucky. She was a member of Rossville Christian Church and a graduate of the Menninger Bible School. She was preceeded in death by three children. McClain was born June 19, 1914, at Delia, Kansas and departed from this life at the Kansas City, Mo., general hospital No. 1 on October 14, 1955, at the age of 41 years, 3 months and 25 days, after a brief illness. On March 31, 1934, he was united in marriage to Velva Louise Rader at Holton, Kansas. To this union three children were born: Rosalee Irene, Leola Alice and Donald James. In 1945, Mr. McClain and family took up their residence in Kansas City, Kansas, and later moved to Bethel where they have since made their home. Leslie had a wide circle of friends and relatives and will be sadly missed by his untimely passing. He was a kind and devoted husband and father. He was employed at the Indianapolis - Kansas City motor Express Co. for the past two years. Leslie is survived by his father, J. H. McClain and stepmother of 1110 East 8th, Topeka, Kansas; seven sisters: Mrs. Stella M. Pettit of Benkelman, Nebraska, Mrs. Stacia A. Eakin of Delia, Kansas, Mrs. Nona E. Mr. McClain worked in a grocery store and farmed in the Rossville area. He was born April 27, 1918, at West Liberty, Ky., the son of Roy and Eva Trimble McClain. He lived in Indiana a few years before he moved with his family to Kansas in 1922. He graduated from Rossville High School and attended Emporia State Teachers College. Mr. McClain was a member and former president of the Lions Club and member of Hesperian Lodge No. 111, AF&AM, both at Rossville, and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 555 at Topeka. He also served on the Rossville City Council and was active with the Cub Scouts for four years. He was married to Winifred Emert Aug. 21, 1947, in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Rossville. She survives. Mr. McClain was born February 28, 1914, in Lenox, Ky., the son of Roy and Eva Trimble McClain. He was educated in the Rossville schools, Emporia and Washburn colleges. He was a teacher and salesman. He was a veteran of World War II. Mr. McClain was married in 1940 to the former Viola Strimple. They were the parents of two sons. She died July 22, 1982. She attended Emporia State Teachers College and then taught school in the District #101 country school north of Rossville. She was married to Vencille McClain August 4, 1940. They moved to Seneca in 1975 from Ashton, Ill., and lived at Beattie a short time before returning to Seneca. He survives at the home in Seneca. Other survivors include her mother, Anna Strimple, Rossville; two sons, Eldon McClain, Ocean Springs, Miss., and Arlan McClain, Ashton, Ill.; a brother, Orville Strimple, Rossville; and four grandchildren. Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 29, at the Nemaha Valley Chapel Assembly of God Church, Seneca. | 7944 |  | Obituary- McCleery, Frank Frank McCleery The last of the McCleery men to live in the McCleery timber died Monday night, May 6, the victim of his third stroke. He was Frank McCleery, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sam McCleery, pioneer settlers of the earliest 1870’s The latter passed away in December, 1938, at the age of 95 years. The former died in 1926 at the age of 88. Frank McCleery was called to his Maker in the 65-year-old home of his parents, part of which was a log building they had purchased from the Indians. It is located two miles southeast of St. Marys, back in the woods a quarter-mile from the Sandy Hook road, known in the earlier days as Mission Lane. Frank was 68 years old and a native of Pottawatomie county, having been born April 21, 1872, near St. Clere. Of a retiring disposition, his acquaintance was not wide among the younger generation, but the respect in which he was held by his neighbors was attested during his final illness. A great traveller in his youth, Frank was a nature lover to his last days. He would roam the timberlands and often sought relaxation along the banks of the Kaw. He was an inveterate reader, too, and never failed to devote a few minutes each day to a perusal of the Bible. He is survived by his widow, Blanche Gutshall McCleery whom he married April 14, 1921, and by two daughters, Mary, 15, and Lucille 13. He is also survived by two brothers, Walter of Rossville, and James, of Kansas City; and Mrs. Jennie Nightwine of North Topeka. Pallbearers were Ernest and Achille Ronsse, Henry Stockman, Fred Hesse Clarence Yocum and Charles Berkey. Funeral services were at the Feebler Funeral Home, North Topeka, with burial in Rochester cemetery, North Topeka.—St. Marys Star. | |

| 7946 |  | Obituary- McClelland, Jane 1 Jane Rogers McClelland November 14, 1940 — September 10, 2022 Rossville On September 10, 2022, the gentle soul of Jane Rogers McClelland entered heavenly rest after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Jane was the eldest of two children born to Clyde and Fern Rogers in Rossville, Kansas on November 14, 1940. She started her long list of significant accolades growing up in Rossville, becoming an accomplished pianist and trumpet player, and an active member of the Rossville Methodist Church. Jane graduated as Valedictorian from Rossville High School and went on to attend Kansas State University where she studied English and Spanish Education. She was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship for her academic prowess, studying Spanish literature in Burgos, Spain. After her marriage to Jerry Fritz, she embarked on her teaching career in Southern California. Armed with her master’s degree and fluency in Spanish, she quickly moved from teaching junior high to high school to college instruction. Jane was studying for her PhD poolside, when she met California native Martin McClelland in Huntington Beach, California. They were married on January 30, 1975, and moved to Apple Valley, California. To everyone’s surprise, Jane did not return to teaching after the birth of her children - son Wesley Rogers and daughter Allison Suzanne - rather, she put her focus on being a full-time mother. Jane spent many hours throughout the years supporting civic and philanthropic activities including Assistance League, PEO, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Rossville Library. The family moved to Festus, Missouri in 1989. Jane quickly developed deep meaningful friendships there. After Wes went off to Duke University and Allison left for UMKC Medical School, Jane and Marty moved back to the family farm in Rossville in 1999. Through the years, Jane felt called to preserve the legacy of the family farm, Flying R Farms, which has been in the family since 1872. She was successful at that too, first through the efforts of her brother, Don Rogers, and then with the help of longtime friend and farmer, Howard Parr. Jane loved to travel, setting foot on four continents, and was always keen to pose for fun snapshots. She loved trips to her beloved Santa Fe and the Desert Southwest with friends, joining Marty at conventions hosted at famous resorts, and long phone conversations with distant friends. Jane was proud of playing an organ recital at the First Presbyterian Church pipe organ, her inner circle of very classy friends, and most importantly, what great people both her kids have become. Jane missed out on the pleasures of her golden years by the onset of Alzheimer’s in 2014. Even through the immense difficulties, the disease was never able to take away her enchanting smile. That smile will be the enduring symbol of Jane’s legacy. Jane is survived by her husband Marty McClelland, son Wes McClelland, daughter Allison McClelland, daughter-in-law Jessica Grounds, grandchildren McKenzie and Kimball McClelland, brother Don Rogers, sister-in-law Ruth Rogers, nephew Jared Rogers, and was preceded-in-death by nephew John Rogers. In lieu of flowers, tributes to Jane can be made through donations to her cherished Rossville Library at a gofundme page for the Friends of the Rossville Community Library. We would like to say special thanks to Jane’s in-home care nurse, Nancy Carroll, and to Rossville Healthcare and Rehab Center for their efforts and kindness. Funeral Services will be 10:30 A.M.
