He had not been able to work on the farm for nearly two years. He was born Feb. 23, 1881, and passed away at a Topeka Hospital Sept. 4, 1958. He is survived by three brothers, John, of California; Robert and Josh of Silver Lake; a sister, Olivia, also of Silver Lake. Funeral services were Sept. 6, at Parker Mortuary. Burial was in Silver Lake Cemetery. | |
| 8052 |  | Obituary- McRoberts, Joshua Josh McRoberts Joshua McRoberts, 76, a lifelong resident at Silver Lake, died Sunday night in a Topeka hospital. He was born July 24, 1885, near Silver Lake and was a farmer in that community all his life. He was a member of the Silver Lake Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his widow, Pearl, of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Ellen Bailey, Meriden; a son, Eugene McRoberts, Topeka; two brothers, John McRoberts, Venice, Calif., and R. L. McRoberts, Silver Lake; and a granddaughter. Services were at 3:30 p. m. Tuesday in Silver Lake Methodist Church with burial in Silver Lake Cemetery. Parker Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. | |
| 8053 |  | Obituary- McRoberts, Robert ROBERT MCROBERTS, KILLED ON HIGHWAY Aiding his father and other youngsters in restoring overturned sheds and building to their rightful position Friday morning. Robert McRoberts, 10, of Silver Lake, was instantly killed when he ran in front of a Santa Fe bus, on highway 40, at the south edge of Silver Lake, near the Frank Bridgeford home. Halloween pranksters had overturned several buildings, Sheriff Dean Rogers learned on investigation, and the boy was assisting his father, Town Marshal R. L. McRoberts in righting them. The bus was driven by E. S. Moore of 213 South Ninth street, Salina, and was westbound. It was traveling at a low rate of speed, when the youngster darted out of a group and in front of it. His head was crushed. Sheriff Rogers and Hall Smith, assistant county attorney went immediately to the scene of the accident. Rogers said that it appeared to have been an “‘unavoidable accident.” A relief driver was sent to Silver Lake to take the bus west. The child’s body was brought to Topeka and taken to Shellabarger’s funeral home. Besides his parents four brothers, Howard, Albert, Lee and George McRoberts and two sisters, Mrs. Edna Wyatt and Miss Ruth McRoberts, all of Silver Lake, survive him. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Silver Lake Methodist church conducted by Rev. Dennison. Our community was saddened last Friday by the death of Robert McRoberts, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. McRoberts, who was killed on the pavement near the Frank Bridgford home by a bus. He had accompanied his father, who is city marshal, and a group of boys to repair some Halloween damage done the night before. While crossing the pavement Robert was struck by the bus and killed instantly. The funeral was conducted from the M. E. church Sunday afternoon by the Rev. C. B. Dennison. Music was furnished by Mrs. Alden Goodnow and Mrs. C.O. Shafer, accompanied by Mrs. Kate Dudley. The pallbearers were Jack Merillat, Charles Griffin, Billie Jeffries, Jimmie Miller, Billie Bell and Gene Beal. Our community extends their sympathy to the bereaved parents, sisters and brothers. | 8054 |  | Obituary- McRoberts, Sarah SARAH J. MCROBERTS Miss Sarah J. McRoberts, 69, died Thursday at her home on Rt. l, Silver Lake. She was born Nov. 5, 1888, near Silver Lake and was a lifelong resident of that community. She is survived by a sister, Olivia McRoberts, of the home; five brothers, John McRoberts of Venice. Calif.; Joe McRoberts and George McRoberts also of the home; Robert McRoberts of Silver Lake; Josh McRoberts of Rt. 1, Silver Lake and several nieces and nephews. | 8055 |  | Obituary- McRoberts, Wilbur Wilbur Eugene "Gene” McRoberts Silver Lake - Wilbur Eugene "Gene" McRoberts, 74, Silver Lake, died Mon., Sept. 1,2008, at Rossville Valley Manor. He was born March 7,1934, in Shawnee County, the son of Pearl and Joshua McRoberts. He went to school at Forest Bluff Grade School and graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1951. Gene served in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1956. He retired from Kaw Valley Electric on March 1, 1996. He was a member of the Silver Lake United Methodist Church, Lake Lodge # 50 AF & AM (Past Master), Topeka Scottish Rite Bodies (life member), Jimmie Lillard Post # 31 of the American Legion, and Silver Lake Lions Club (charter member). Gene served on the Grove Township Board for 18 years. He was united in marriage with Vada Hope George on Nov. 1, 1952, in Topeka. They have one daughter, Jeanette Catron. Gene is survived by his wife: Vada of the home; daughter: Jeanette (Keith) Catron; grandchildren: Dustin (Angela) Dick, Melissa (Courtney) Morgan and Derek (Kimberlee) Dick; a step-granddaughter: Erin (Trent) Kraus; and 5 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Thurs., Sept. 4, 2008, at the Silver Lake United Methodist Church. A U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard will conduct military honors at Walnut Hill Cem¬etery. | 8056 |  | Obituary- Meade, Abca Abca Hope Meade Abca Hope Meade, 85, Rossville, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at her home in Rossville. She was born August 5, 1918, in Rossville, the daughter of Walter and Ida Lorannie “Rena” Marney Patton and had lived in Rossville all of her life. She graduated from Rossville High School, and beauty college in Manhattan. She was a beauty operator in Rossville and in Topeka. She worked for the United States Postal Service in Rossville before she retired. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville, and a member of the Citizen Band Potawatomi Nations of Shawnee, OK. On June 4, 1940, she was married to Charles Meade in St. Marys. He survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Charles Meade, Jr., Rossville; two sisters, Nora Dell Foresman, St. Marys, and Eileen St. Louis, Topeka; a granddaughter and a grandson; and one great-granddaughter. Preceding her in death are a grandson, Dwight Meade, in July 1971; her parents; brothers Osto, Kermit and Pete Patton; and sisters Donic Parr and Juanita Foresman. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Burial will be in the Rossville Cemetery. | 8059 |  | Obituary- Meade, Charles CHARLES U. MEADE Charles U. Meade, 88, Rossville, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at the Rossville Healthcare Center. He was born June 9, 1918, at Wakeana, Okla., the son of Grant and Amy Steffee Meade. He moved to the Rossville community at an early age and attended school there. Mr. Meade served in the United States Navy. Charles was a heavy equipment operator and had worked construction for many years. He was a member of the Catholic faith. He also was a member of Jimmy Lillard Post No. 31 for 49 years, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 15017 and the Hoisting and Portable Union No. 101 out of Kansas City. On June 4, 1940, he was united in marriage to Abca Hope Patton at St. Marys. She died March 14,2004. Mr. Meade was also preceded in death by a grandson, Dwight Meade in. July 1971. Survivors include a son, Charles (Patti) Meade Jr., Rossville; a granddaughter, Tonya (Brian) Hatina, Rossville; a grandson, Jared Meade, Topeka and two great granddaughters, Erika and Emily. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, June 2, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Rossville. Interment was in the Rossville Cemetery. | 8062 |  | Obituary- Meade, Ulysses GRANT MEADE DIES U. Grant Meade, 77, died Wednesday at his home. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 pm at the Methodist Church with burial in the Rossville Cemetery. Hurley Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. ULYSSES GRANT MEADE Ulysses Grant Meade was born June 26, 1830, at Collins, Iowa. He passed away August 14, 1957, at his home in Rossville Kansas, at the age of 77 years, 1 month. 19 days. Mr. Meade came to Kansas in a covered wagon at the age of nine when his parents homesteaded at Osborne. In 1908 he moved to the Willard community and it was there, in the next year, that he was married to Amy Ann Steffee. They were the parents of six children. One daughter, Helen Margaret, died in infancy. He was also preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and three sisters. Mr. Meade is survived by his widow, Amy, three sons: Franklin Henry, Charles Ulysses, and Grant Junior; two daughters: Etta Mae Richardson of Topeka and Opal Ellen Fueston of Huntington Park, California; eight grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Mr. Meade was a member of the Baptist Church at Osborne, Kansas. He was a kind husband and father and loved his community. | |
| 8063 |  | Obituary- Medley, Phyllis CHILD KILLED IN A CRASH An 18-months-old girl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Medley, of Tampa, Marion county, was fatally injured last Friday night when the car driven by Medley collided with a car driven by Roy Kirk, insurance dealer of Topeka, near the Emert place west of Rossville. Both cars were wrecked. The Medley baby died in St. Francis hospital about two hours later. Mr. and Mrs. Medley and their son received severe bruises. Kirk received fractures of his rib and knee cap. Kirk was taken to Stormont hospital. The cars crashed when Kirk made a desperate and successful attempt to avoid striking a vehicle driven by Chester Bellman, who was on his way from Rossville to his home on the John Kesler place. As Kirk swung around the wagon the Medley car, a model T. Ford, with dim lights, appeared thru the rain that was falling. The cars met head on, and were so badly wrecked they had to be towed away. Passersby took the victims of the accident to St. Francis and Stormont hospitals. Ernest Quigley famed athletic official on his way to his home at St. Marys for Christmas helped aid the injured persons. The Medley child, Phillis, died soon after reaching St. Francis hospital. She had received a skull fracture. Kirk was sent to Stormont hospital. The death of the Medley baby is the twenty-sixth death in Shawnee county resulting from a motor car accident. Medley, 26, of Santa Monica, Calif., son of Mrs. Ed Stein of 222 Harrison, Topeka, who was killed Saturday in a motor-car accident near Bakersfield, Calif., were held in Santa Monica, Wednesday. Mr. Medley’s brother Harry Medley of Topeka and his uncle, Jesse Ray, of Denison, left Sunday to attend the services. He was born near Silver Lake November 28, 1923, and went to Topeka with his parents in 1930. He enlisted in the Navy in December, 1940. and was discharged in November, 1946. Survivors include two children, James W. Mee, Tempe, AZ and Jane Jackson, Goodwell, OK; five grandchildren, Sherri Elsasser, Charles Mee, Andrew Mee, Sarah Bergin and Samantha Piepergerdes; seven great-grandchildren, Leo and Aaron Elsasser, Evan, Tyler and Riley Bergin and Babel and Jasper Piepergerdes; a sister, Wilma “Billie” Dolezilek, Rossville; and numerous nieces and nephews. | 8068 |  | Obituary- Meek, Perry Perry Meek Buried Yesterday Perry Meek died Tuesday morning after a short illness his death resulting from acute bronchitis and myocardial degeneration. Mr. Meek has not been in the best of health for several years. Mr. Meeks [sic] came to this vicinity in the early days of the township's history and with the exception of a number of years spent in Pottawatomie county, Okla., had continued his residence here. Perry Meek was born in Andrew county, Mo., April 18, 1850 and was aged 68 years, 6 months and 2 days at the time of his decease. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary J. Wykert, February 13, 1868 at to this union six children were born, three sons and three daughters, of whom one son and the daughters have preceded him to the grave. The surviving members of his family are the widow and two sons, Russell and Cyrus Meek, and five sisters. The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the cemetery conducted by the Rev. J.F. | 8069 |  | Obituary- Meenen, Donald Donald Wayne Meenen was born in Clay Center, Kansas on July 15, 1929 to Fritz and Emma Belle (Drake) Meenen. He attended Sherwood country school through the eighth grade, transferring to public school where he graduated from Clay Center High School in 1947. He graduated from Kansas State University, in 1951 with a degree in agriculture. While in high school, he was a member of the CCHS Stardusters Jazz Band. At KSU, he was member of the KSU marching band and the Block and Bridle Club. He married Joann Darlene Heusted on August 13, 1950 who survives of the home. After his KSU graduation, he and Joann moved to Clifton and made their home on the KA Drake family farm near Clifton. To this union were born five children who survive; twin daughters, Nancy (Dr.Terry) Moser, and Linda (Randy) Brown of Topeka; three sons, Doug (Karen), Topeka, Michael (Sarah), Americus, and Patrick (Micki), Hiawatha. They became foster parents to Albert (Julia) West and Bill West (Charlotte Mercer) in 1972, who also survive and remain part of the family. Other survivors include a sister, Dora Morris of Wamego, and a brother Edward Meenen of Clay Center. Grandchildren, Regina Hoerner Muncheberg (Jens); Tracy Hoerner Rose (Brad); Bryon Hoerner (Caitlin); Heather Brown Cunningham (Michael); Jeremy Brown (Errin); Kristi Brown Harrell (Travis); Matthew and Michael Meenen (Madison); Sarah Meenen; Mark Meenen (Miranda); Rachel Meenen; Ashli Meenen, Kyle (Shelby), and Shane (Emily) Meenen; 18 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fritz Henry and Emma Belle Drake Meenen, and his brother in law, Col. Raymond E Morris. Don actively participated in the family farming until health issues led to his retirement in 1970. He was then employed in the Agronomy and Hardware Dept at Farmer's Union Cooperative in Clay Center and then served as General Manager of Concordia Coop. After leaving the family farm in 1986 and a short stint at Osborne, KS, they returned to Greenleaf in 1987 where he continued employment for Coop. He retired from the Coop in 1994. For the next 10 years, he was employed providing public transportation for Twin Valley in Greenleaf. While living in Greenleaf, he served on the Tree Board. He and Joann provided transportation for Kansas Specialty Dog Service in Washington, bringing clients to and from the Kansas City airport. In 2010, they moved to Topeka where they resided alongside their daughter Linda's family. After this move, Don actively participated in providing transportation and supervision of his grandchildren, taking them to their activities. He was a proud supporter of his grandchildren attending ballgames, activities and school programs faithfully until his health prevented it. From childhood, his faith became the foundation for how he lived his life. No matter where he lived, Don was active in his church community, and exhibited a strong, quiet faith to family and friends. His giving continued in his death as he donated his body to Science Care. In lieu of flowers, Don requested memorials to Avalon Hospice, Rossville Methodist Church, or Kansas Specialty Dog Service and sent in care of Piper Funeral Home, 714 Maple Street, St. Marys, Kansas 66536. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 25th 10:30 a.m. at the Rossville Methodist church. Inurnment of his ashes will be in the family plot at Riverdale Cemetery, south of Clifton at a later date. | |
| 8070 |  | Obituary- Meenen, Joann 1 Joann Meenen June 28, 1929 — February 4, 2022 Joann Darlene Heusted Meenen Joann Darlene Heusted Meenen was born on June 28, 1929 in Clay Center, Kansas to Warren V. and Bertha McNeal Heusted. She passed away on February 4, 2022 at her home in Topeka, Kansas where she lived with her daughter, Linda Brown. She attended schools in Clay Center and graduated with the honor of co-valedictorian of her class at Clay County Community High School in 1947. Following graduation, she completed business courses at Brown Mackie Business in Topeka. She then worked in Topeka at Seltsam-Hanni Insurance Co. until her marriage. High school sweethearts, she and Donald Wayne Meenen were married on August 13, 1950 in Clay Center, Kansas. Their first year of marriage was spent in Manhattan while Don completed his senior year at Kansas State University. During that year she worked at a bank in Manhattan. After Don’s graduation they settled on his grandfather’s farm north of Clifton (the Kernal Drake farm) where she learned and adapted to farm life and being a farmer’s wife. Clifton was their home until 1986, when they moved to Osbourne, Kansas before returning to North Central Ks and living in Greenleaf, Ks for 23 years. In 2010, she and Don moved to Topeka to live with daughter, Linda and her family. To this union were born five children who survive: twin daughters, Nancy (Terry) Moser and Linda Brown, of Topeka; three sons, Doug (Karen), Topeka; Mike (Sarah), Linn; and Pat(Micki) Meenen, of Hiawatha. In 1972 they became foster parents to Albert (Julia) West, Topeka who survives and Bill (Charlotte) West, who preceded her in death in 2021. Other survivors include; brother, Leroy (Sandy) Heusted of Surprise, Arizona; sister-in-laws Marian Heusted, Topeka, Dora Meenen Morris of Wamego and brother-in-law, Edward Meenen of Clay Center; 16 grandchildren: Regina (Jens) Muncheberg; Tracy (Brad) Rose; Bryon (Caitlin) Hoerner; Heather (Michael) Cunningham; Jeremy (Errin) Brown, Kristi Brown Harrell; Mark (Miranda) Meenen, Rachel Meenen; Ashli (Ricardo) Melon; Kyle (Shelby) Meenen; Shane (Emily) Meenen; Matthew Meenen, Michael (Madison) Meenen and Sarah Meenen; Justin West, Jaimie (Micheal) West Ingwerson; 26great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. | |

Morris; son-in-law, Randy Brown; foster son, Bill West. She loved cooking and baking for her family. “Can Grandma bring her rolls?” was a frequent comment from her grandchildren. Planting and tending to a garden and flower beds also brought her great joy. Family gatherings were opportunities to prepare and share a feast lovingly prepared. After moving to Topeka, she remained active caring for the combined household which included an active four year old great grandson, Kaden. Attending grandchildren activities was a favorite pastime. She was very proud and supportive of all her children and their families. She was a regular contributor to the community newspaper, as she enjoyed writing and recording the family events as they occurred. Her birthday cards always included a special personal written message. Many days when she could no longer do the cooking and baking, she could be found in her chair reading her Kindle book, watching Hallmark movies and Royals baseball in season, and don’t forget Wheel of Fortune. She was baptized on Easter Sunday of 1946 at First Methodist Church in Clay Center. After moving to Clifton, she was actively involved in her church, Clifton Presbyterian Church teaching Sunday School, participating with Don in the Mariner’s group, and singing in the choir. She was a member of the Lutheran church in Greenleaf serving on the altar committee and assisting with fellowship activities. After moving to Topeka, she became of member of the Rossville Methodist Church. She could be counted on to always have some “goodies” to share. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Avalon Hospice, Visiting Angels or Rossville Methodist Church in care of Piper Funeral Home. Services will be held at Rossville Methodist Church on Saturday, February 12th at 2:00 p.m. Masks will be required at the church. She was married to Joe I. Melenson on November 4, 1914. To this union two daughters were born. For the last few years she has lived in and around Rossville. She united with the First Baptist church of Holton in 1919, and through the years kept a bright faith in her Heavenly Father. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge also at Holton. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, three sisters and one brother. Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Joe I. Melenson, and two daughters, Minona and Josephine, of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Lucy Dyer, Mayetta, Mrs. Arra Adams, Soldier and Mrs. Edna Reed, Maple Hill; two brothers, Floyd Roberson, North Topeka, and John Roberson, of Soldier; also a host of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Melenson was a kind and loving wife and mother, and a friend to everyone who knew her. She is gone, but not forgotten Ne’er shall her memory fade. Sweet thoughts shall ever linger Round the place where she is laid. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Rossville Thursday afternoon, Jan 2, conducted by Rev. Horton. Music was furnished by a quartette of ladies, Mrs. Minnie Navarre, Viola Strimple, Lorene Parr and Mrs. Horton. The pall bearers were Leonard Bolin, W. E. Ellis, Dave Lambert, Fred Mason, M. L. She died unexpectedly Tuesday night at Wichita. She was born July 2, 1908 at Bazaar in Chase County and lived in Topeka at 1417 College un¬til the death of her father, the late Joseph H. Mercer, Live Stock Commissioner of the State of Kansas. Since 1937 she made her home alternately with her two sisters who survive her. Mrs. Elreen M. Riley of Wichita and Mrs. James L. Conley of Delia. She was a member of the Methodist Church of Rossville. Besides the two sister she is survived by nephew Joe M. Conley. | 8081 |  | Obituary- Mercer, Joseph Joseph Mercer Joseph H. Mercer, 73, long identified with the livestock industry in Kansas, died Wednesday at a Topeka hospital. He had served as secretary of the Kansas Livestock association 27 years, and since 1909 had been state sanitary livestock commissioner with the exception of two years during the Hodges administration. Probably no other man was more influential in securing a fair deal for livestock producers from the railroads, the packers and governmental agencies, than was Joe Mercer. As one of his associates said "Joe fought our battles all the way from California to New York, and he usually won his contentions." Mr. Mercer came to Kansas in 1887 and was first engaged in merchandising at Cottonwood Falls, then went into farming and stock raising, and since 1893 had been a well known figure in agricultural affairs, as well as in politics. On July 31, 1890, Mr. Mercer married Ula Luna Scribner, who was born at Cottonwood Falls in October, 1871. Four daughters were born to them: Elreen Montez, now Mrs. Lewis William Riley, Topeka; Josephine Mercedes, who died in 1916; Bess, now Mrs. James Conley of Rossville; and Cora, living at the Mercer home. There is one grandson, Joseph Mercer Conley of Rossville. A brother and sister also survive. The first Mrs. Mercer died in June, 1934. In october, 1935, Mr. Mercer married Mrs. Tillie Stanhope of Eureka, who survives. Mr. Mercer was a member of the Presbyterian church. Also he was a Scottish Rite Mason, belonged to the Elks lodge and the Modern Woodmen of America. Funeral services will be Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. After high school, Larry proudly served in the United States Navy. Larry was joined in marriage to Shirley Jean Colbert on September 26,1975 in Alma. They enjoyed 32 years of marriage. Shirley preceded Larry in death on November 9,2007. He was also preceded by a step son, Eddie Long and a brother, Jim Mercer. Larry retired from maintenance department of Dupont and Flexel in Topeka. | 8083 |  | Obituary- Mergenmeier, George B. SFC George B Mergenmeier, Ret., 84, Topeka, KS, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at his home with his spouse by his side. George was born on July 23, 1936, south of Seneca in Nemaha county, KS to George W. and Stella (Lierz) Mergenmeier. He graduated from St. Peter and Paul Grade School in Seneca, KS. He worked several jobs as a young man and in March 1955 he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he received his GED. He served 2 years with 14 months of that time in Germany. After an honorable discharge, he worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber, Co. Topeka, KS, from August 1957 to May of 1978. George joined the Kansas Army National Guard in 1975. August 1980 he was employed full time by the Guard. George went to Germany with the Fort Riley First Infantry Division on Reforger 1979, in January 1979. He attained the rank of Sergeant First Class before his medical discharge in 1986. George was proud to have served in the U.S. Army. He served as a recruiter from 1980 until he retired in 1986 and loved meeting with people at schools, fairs, celebrations, etc. in Kansas to talk about Army opportunities. He drove a truck with a “shooting gallery” that always drew a crowd where he set up. George belonged to the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the Topeka ARC. He served on the Pottawatomie County Planning Board. George was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, St. Marys, and later a member of Christ the King Church in Topeka and St. Stanislaus Church in Rossville, KS. George married Nadine Rilinger on April 12, 1958, at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Corning, KS. They lived in St. Marys, KS. area from 1959 to 1992 when he moved to the Goff area. In 1999 they moved to the Dover area in Shawnee County, and in 2018 they moved to Brewster Place in Topeka. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline in December 1961 and a son James, in February 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brother Melvin Mergenmeier, and three sisters, Rosie McMurphy, Marie Catherine Welch and Dorothy Mae Koch. He is survived by his spouse Nadine of 62 years. His children; Willie (Shirley)Mergenmeier, St. Charles, MO, Jan (Jim) Hinterweger, Lebo, KS, Andy (Becky) Mergenmeier, Montpelier, VA and Sue (Mat) Flach, Paxico, KS, fourteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. | 8089 |  | Obituary- Metzgar, Andrew ANDREW JACKSON METZGAR Andrew Metzgar was born in Pleasant Plains, Ill., Feb. 12. 1853 and died very suddenly April 18. He came to Kansas when only a boy and settled at Ozawkie Kansas. On June25, 1875 he was united in marriage to Sarah Katherine Adams. To this union seven children were born, five of whom survive him. Mr. Metzgar united with the Seven Day Adventists when he was 21 years of age and remained a member in good standing until the day of his death. Mr. Metzgar came to Willard several years ago where he was in the employ of the Rock Island as pumpman. He also worked for some time at blacksmithing. Later he settled on a farm and remained there until last fall when he gave it up on account of his health and moved back to Willard. Mr. Metzgar was very kind to his family and he had the universal respect of the entire neighborhood. Although his health had been poor he had never been sick enough to be down and continued to be a hardworker. He had often expressed the wish that when he should die it would be quickly but his friends were unprepared for the sudden manner in which he died. He had been out to his son’s farm after a load of hay accompanied by his grandson, and on their way he passed away. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, two sons, Manifold and; Charles Metzgar and three daughters; Mrs. Emma Patterson, Mrs. Nellie Smoot and Miss Eva May Metzgar, all of Willard and six grandchildren. Also two sisters, Mrs. Marguerite Dupree of Stillwater, Okla., Mrs. S. D. Bigham, of Topeka and three brothers, G.W., E. D. and F. P. Metzgar, of Ozawkie, Kansas. Funeral services were hold at the Willard church at 1 o’clock Monday April 20, conducted by Rev. C.E. Roberts of Dyver and the remains taken to Dover for interment. The family have the sympathy of the entire community. | |

Mrs. Meyer worked in the laundry department at the St. Marys College for several years, many years ago. She later did ironing in her home. She was born Oct. 11, 1912, in St. Marys, the daughter of Mike and Anna Homan Fuhr. She was a lifelong St. Marys resident. Mrs. Meyer was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She married Fred “Fritz'' Meyer on May 6, 1941, in St. Marys. He died April 25, 1975. Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Doty, St. Marys; a son, Tom Meyer, Rossville; two brothers, Mike Fuhr and Nick Fuhr, both of St. Marys; four grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in St. Marys. | 8092 |  | Obituary- Meyer, J. Henry HENRY MEYER DEAD J. H. Meyer aged 67 years, 5 months and 26 days, passed away Wednesday July 30, at 11 o’clock at his home on North Main street after a lingering illness dating since January. Mr. Meyer underwent an operation a few months ago and later was confined to his bed when heart complications developed. He was one of Rossville townships prosperous farmers, having moved to Rossville about three years ago after the sale of his farm interests west of Rossville. A year or so ago and 26 days passed away Wednesday, he invested in lands northeast of Rossville and had plans under way for building new improvements when his health gave way. Mr. Meyer was born in Damma, Oldenberg, Germany, February 5th, 1862. In the spring of 1881 he came to America and located in the vicinity of St. Marys. On April 17, 1888, he was married to Catherine Seitz, in Immaculate Conception church at St. Marys. Fourteen children were born to this union. Two children died in infancy and the twelve, who with the widow, survive to mourn his loss, are: Mrs. H. C. Germonprez and Mrs. Ernest Reser, St. Marys; Mrs. H. R. Immenschuh, Silver Lake; Mrs. E. F. Gillgannon, Delia; Misses Catherine Leona, William and Clarence of Rossville; J. C. Meyer and J. B. Meyer, Manhattan; Mrs. Gleason and Miss Rose Meyer, Topeka. There are two sisters and one brother residing in Germany. The funeral mass will be sung in Immaculate Conception church at St. Marys, Friday at 10 o’clock and the body interred in the St. Marys Catholic cemetery. The pall bearers will be Messrs. S R. Santee, Achille Ronsse, Julius Immenschuh, Joseph Lenherr, T. J Byrnes and Joe Reding. | |

Mr. Meyer was a tire builder 28 years for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. of Topeka. He retired in 1983. He served with the 174th Military Police Battalion, Kansas National Guard, at St. Marys and was activated during the Korean War. He was born Sept. 25, 1929, at Rossville, the son of Clarence W. Meyer Sr., and LaVerne Irene Tucker Meyer. Mr. Meyer was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 657, was Cubmaster of Pack No. 128 from 1959 to 1961, and served on the St. Marys Planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals, all in St. Marys. He also was a member of Jimmy Lillard Post No. 31 of the American Legion in Rossville. He was married to Helen A. Vowells Sept. 25, 1950, at St. Marys. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Helen Graham, St. Marys, and Jeannie Johnson, Olsburg; a son, Cliff Meyer, Wamego; his mother, LaVerne Irene Meyer, St. Marys; and six grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery at St. Marys. She was born May 9, 1929, in Tulare, S.D., to Clarence and Iona Root Binger. She spent her early life in South Dakota. She moved to Rossville in 1972 and to Topeka in 1983. She was a member of Countryside United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Topeka Woman’s Club, Arab Shrine Nobelles and the Christian Children’s Fund. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Women’s Guild at the church and Order of Eastern Star, all in Tulare, S.D. She was a graduate of the Flo V. Menninger Bible Study course. She married Eugene H. Meyer on June 6, 1948, in Tulare, S.D. He died June 24,1988. Daughters Diane Meyer and Rhonda Meyer died in infancy. Survivors include two sons, Vaughn H. Meyer, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Keith C. Meyer, Rossville; four daughters, Debora K. Pentecost, Lawrence, Joyce M. Buchholz, Manhattan, and Janice J. Sharp and Faye R. Miller, both in Rossville; a brother, Harvey C. Binger, Britton, S.D.; four sisters, Alice MacNeill and Della Belle Binger, both in Tulare, S.D., Maxine Boyd, Williams Bay, Wis. and Marlene Walton, Carter Lake, Iowa; and 18 grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Christ in Tulare, S.D. Burial will be in St. John’s Church Cemetery in Tulare, S.D. Mr. Meyer farmed in the Sandy Hook area until he retired in 1969. He moved to St. Marys in 1964, because of ill health. He was born January 4, 1906, north of St. Marys, the son of John Henry and Catherine Seitz Meyer. Mr. Meyer was the last of 14 children. He graduated from St. Marys Grade School and attended high school at St Mary’s College. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #657, St. Marys, Past President of Pottawatomie County Farmers Union, Past member for many years of the Tri-County Drainage Board, served on the Board of Directors for Farmers Union Co-operative Business Association, St. Marys. She was in failing health the past five years. She was born Dec. 4, 1894, at Ozawkie, the daughter of Jake and Kate Eshom Ammen. Mrs. Meyer was a member of the United Methodist Church and a former member of the auxiliary to Grahem-Herbers Post No. 3084 of Veterans of Foreign Wars, both at Valley Falls. She was married to Louis A. Meyer Feb. 25, 1913, at Ozawkie. They farmed in the Ozawkie, Oskaloosa and McLouth communities until they moved to Valley Falls in 1948. He died Aug. 12, 1950. A son, Eugene Meyer, died June 3, 1972. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Vera Adams, Delia, Mrs. Maxine Boyd, Route 3, Leavenworth, and Mrs. Betty Clark, Kansas City, Mo.; two sons, Everett Meyer, Kansas City, Mo., and Warren Meyer, Topeka; a sister, Mrs. Anna Cunning, Meriden; 10 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-great-grandson. Betty graduated from Seaman High School in 1941. She worked at Josten’s American Yearbook for 20 years before retiring. She played for the Ed Marling’s Chesney Women’s softball team. She was a member of Northland Christian Church. Betty volunteered for Stormont-Vail NICU, rocking newborn babies. She delivered Meals On Wheels. Betty was married to Harold A. Michael in a triple wedding on Jan. 1,1942. The three grooms — Harold, Robert Hess, and Bud Head — were preparing to leave for military service in World War II. Harold preceded her in death on May 8, 1988. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Francis “Frannie” Whitehead and Faye Stewart; two brothers, Robert Hess and Frank “Pete” Hess Jr.; and great-granddaughter Shawndy Hogue.
