Death Takes G.W. Stumbaugh
He Was Stricken by Heart Disease Thursday Forenoon
Dropped Dead in His Home
Had Been in Reasonably Good Health

Death came to George W. Stumbaugh, one of the old citizens of Rossville community, at 4 o'clock Thursday morning. Mr. Stumbaugh was at his home northwest of Rossville, when he died. Heart disease was the cause. He was 78 years old.

The death of Mr. Stumbaugh is a shock to Rossville and community. Although he had contracted a cold within the past few weeks, his physical condition seemed as good as usual and when he visited in Rossville last Monday he seemed good for many years more. Mr. Stumbaugh awoke about midnight last Wednesday night and complained of feeling ill. He arose, put on his clothes and went down stairs. Mrs. Stumbaugh also had gotten up, to give him assistance if necessary. About 4 o'clock Mr. Stumbaugh suffered an attack of heart disease and passed away.

Mr. Stumbaugh was born Jan. 31, 1834, in Blaine, Perry county, Pa. He was married in 1858 and came to Kansas in 1882 and settled on a farm one mile west of Rossville. His wife died, leaving one son, S.F. Stumbaugh. Twelve years ago Mr. Stumbaugh was married to Mrs. Frances DeBurrows. Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, one son, S.F. Stumbaugh, one granddaughter and two grandsons.

Mr. Stumbaugh was a member of the Methodist church for forty years. He was respected by all who knew him, and honored as a good neighbor and kind-hearted, peace-loving citizen. He will be missed by scores of friends and neighbors whose long and friendly association with him made him a cherished friend.

The funeral service will be held from the Methodist church at 2:30 this (Friday) afternoon. The burial will be in Rossville cemetery.

Answer Unnecessary
Death Settled Divorce Case -- Pathetic Reply of Husband

One of the many divorce cases which are pending in the district court has been settled. Death made the settlement. It was the Stumbaugh case. The plaintiff, Mrs. Mary B. Stumbaugh; died last night after a long illness caused by cancerous growth.

Mrs. Stumbaugh brought suit for a divorce from her husband, George W. Stumbaugh, only a few days ago, charging that he refused to provide her with medical aid or care although he was abundantly able to do so. For this reason she had herself removed to the home of a friend.

As Mrs. Stumbaugh lay dying the attorneys for her husband were drawing their answer to her petition, and it was filed today. In it Mr. Stumbaugh says:
"The plaintiff has always conducted herself toward this defendant as a faithful and dutiful wife, and this defendant further alleges that said plaintiff was always loving and kind toward this defendant and her son, S.F. Stumbaugh, and did everything that a wife and mother should do in her condition of health. That her hands and feet and heart never grew weary waiting upon this defendant when he was sick, nor was she ever derelict in her duty to her only child, S.F. Stumbaugh, the other defendant in this case.

Mr. Stumbaugh then admits the truth of his wife's statements concerning their property, giving his wife all credit possible for its accumulation. He closes his answer by saving that he does not believe his wife applied for the divorce of her own free will, but was either out of her mind or was unduly informed by outside parties to do so. -State Journal, Nov. 17

William Stumbaugh Dead.
Again our hearts are saddened by Death. William Stumbaugh, an old and respected citizen of Rossville, passed away at his home on Orange street last Monday after an illness of a few weeks. "Uncle Billy," as he was familiarly called by those who knew him best, had been suffering for some time past from inflammatory rheumatism. His friends were not alarmed, however, until complications set in early last week. He grew steadily worse in spite of the best medical skill and his life gradually faded away.

Funeral services were held at the home on Orange street, Tuesday at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Armstrong, after which the body was consigned to the grave in the Rossville city cemetery. "Uncle Billy" was kind and generous, with a bright and cheerful disposition. Those who knew him best respected him most.

William Stumbaugh was born in Pennsylvania. He had been a resident of this community for the past 18 years. He leaves one brother, George Stumbaugh, living a few miles west of Rossville, and three sisters in Pennsylvania.

Obituary:
RESIDENT SINCE 1862
Mrs. Anna Stuver Died at Home Wednesday.
FUNERAL ON SATURDAY
Born in Pennsylvania — Aged Resident of Warren Township — Surviving Family.

Wednesday evening at the old home place south of Luther occurred the death of Mrs. Anna Stuver, widow of the late Jacob Stuver. Death came after an illness which came upon her in the nature of a paralytic stroke some time Saturday night, since which she had not regained consciousness.

In recent weeks Mrs. Stover has been a regular attendant at the revival meetings in progress at Makin. Saturday she attended a funeral and had expected to go to church in the evening, but was feeling so badly that she gave up going. Sunday morning she was found by her daughter, Mrs. Bender, with whom she made her home on the old farm place, in an unconscious and partially paralyzed condition. It was realized that on account of her advanced age there was no hope for her recovery, though Dr. Ira Perry of Bippus gave close attention.

Anna Doney was born in Northampton county, Pa., eighty-five years ago. About sixty-two years ago, while still a resident of Pennsylvania, she became the wife of Jacob Stuver. In 1855 the family moved to Hancock county, Ohio, whence they moved to this county about 1862, settling on a farm in Warren township which had since been the family home with the exception of two years spent in Bippus.

Two years ago in February Mr. Stover passed to his reward. Mrs. Stuver continued at the home place. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. Emma King and A. L. and Edward Stuver of this city; Mrs. Savilla Keiger of Kosciusko county; Mrs. Mary McConahey of Kansas; Mrs. Ada Bender at the home place and Jacob Stuver of Clear Creek township. Prior to the disbanding of the Lutheran church near the home Mrs. Stuver was a faithful and devoted member. Recently she had been attending services at the United Brethren church.

The funeral will be held from the late residence Saturday morning at 9, Rev. W. A. Thomas probably officiating. Interment will be at the Funk cemetery.

Obituary:
DEATH DUE TO HIS AGE
john Stuver Dies at Age of Ninety-Five
FUNERAL TO BE SATURDAY

Jacob Stuver, one of the oldest men of Huntington county, died near Bippus Wednesday afternoon at 3:45. Physicians thought paralysis was working on him though death was mostly attributed to age. He had been in feeble health some time, though his last sickness came upon him only Tuesday at noon.

Mr. Stuver was born in Northampton county, Pa., June 27, 1809. From that state he came to Seneca county Ohio, then to Hancock county, Ind., and in the spring of 1863 to Huntington county, settling on a farm in Warren township where he lived until his death with the exception of possibly two years when he lived in Bippus. He was married more than fifty-nine years ago and to Mr. and Mrs. Stuver were born several children.

Surviving him are his devoted wife and children as follows: Alfred of this city, Jacob of Clearcreek, Edward of this city, Mrs. Savilla Keiger of Kosciusko county, Mrs. Emma King of this city and Mrs. Ada Bender who with her husband lives with her parents on the home place. Two sons and four daughters are dead.

Mr. Stuver was formerly a member of the Lutheran church but recently has not been an active member. Nor was he connected with any fraternal organization. In politics he was always a democrat. He was a most highly respected citizen and well-to-do, leaving an eighty-acre farm.

The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 10 o’clock from the Funk church. An effort is being made to secure the services of the regular pastor of that congregation.

George found the time and energy to always volunteer. He was a Member of the Lions Club, 4-H Leader, Boy Scout Leader, Rossville High School Booster Club, and served on the board at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. George and Marie loved their volunteer work with the Rossville Senior Center and at the age of 92, he was still delivering meals to seniors that were homebound. The Rossville community honored George on August 8, 1987. They made a proclamation that it would be George Sullivan Day and he served as the Grand Marshall of the Rossville Tall Corn Festival Parade. The plaque he received is engraved, "George Sullivan, In Appreciation for over 30 Years of Service to the Rossville Area Community, Our World is a Brighter Because of You." He was a shining example to his children, grandchildren and to everyone who knew him on the importance of helping and giving to others.

When he was not on his lawn mower, swinging on his porch swing or watching KU, KSU or the KC Chiefs, he would spend time with Marie at the casino. And yes, he did win a bass boat once but took the money instead! The Sullivan Home got a new roof that year!

Our hearts are full of gratitude for all those who helped to care for our Dad during these past few months. You were his Angels on Earth.

Theresa Marie Sullivan
Theresa Marie Sullivan was born to William M. Corcoran and Nancy Ellen Glover October 15,1930. Marie graduated from Solomon High School in 1948, and in March of 1949, she was united in marriage to George E. Sullivan in Solomon, Kansas. With four generations at her bedside, Grandma Marie passed, peacefully March 20, 2017. The visitation was Wednesday, March 22 a Rosary was at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Rossville, Kansas The funeral Mass was held Thursday, March 23rd at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Solomon, Kansas.

One recent night, while watching HGTV, Marie stated, “If 1 were born in a different time, I would’ve been an architect.” Marie was an architect. She bettered her community by dedicating time and effort to the schools, Rossville Library, 4-H, St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, community celebrations, cub scouts, and Rossville Senior Center. She was a lifelong volunteer, and in true Marie fashion, she requests donations be made to the Rossville Senior Center, Mt. Calvary Cemetery Fund (Solomon, Kansas), or donor’s choice in lieu of flowers. Beside her loving husband, Marie always had a vision and was the architect of an expanding home. Our family walks through a house where stones were laid and bulbs were planted by her hands. We sit on couches she built and throw pillows she sewed. We cling to sleeping bags she made with our initials stitched on the opening flaps. Marie was the architect that grew this family from the love of her George into four children, 10 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. She traced our family lineage and mapped out our ever-growing family—a blueprint we will continue to frame. Marie raised us, ran the show, and somehow continues to strengthen us even in her death. In true Marie fashion, her living will states that she “hopes” we will follow all her requests, but Marie, we’re going to have flowers at your funeral—sorry, not sorry. However, again in true Marie fashion, it seems fitting to close this dear farewell with her words: “You have all given me great joy, and I have had a full life. Love to all. Mom.”.
