Obituary- Kratina, Sr., John
Obituary- Kratina, Sr., John
OBITUARY
John Kratina died at his home six miles northeast of Rossville, Dec. 6, aged 76 years, 8 months and 10 days. He was born in Pozdechov, Moravia, now a province of the Czecho-Slovakian republic.

With his wife Mr. Kratina came to this country in the spring of 1891 and settled on the old homestead northeast of town where he lived until his death. In his native country he learned the art of watch-making. In 1903 he established a jewelry and watch repairing shop in Rossville. The venture proving unprofitable, after a few years he returned to the farm.

Besides the wife, he leaves four children, two sons, Frank, manager of the Farmer's elevator, Delia; John, Jr., who has charge of the farms; two daughters, Mrs. Joe Penaz of Delia and Mrs. Geo. Uhl, Topeka.

The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the lodge hall in the community and was conducted by the ZCBJ Lodge of which he was a charter member. The funeral oration was delivered by the Hon, S. Dobrovlny, of Pawnee City, Nebraska.

Several vocal numbers were sung in duet by Mrs. A. B. Jamieson and Mrs. Albert Reser of Rossville. The capacious hall was filled to over-flowing with sympathizing friends and neighbors. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful in design. Burial took place in the neighborhood cemetery.

In the passing of Mr. Kratina the community loses its best loved citizen. He was a kindly, generous soul whose guide through life assuredly was the preceipt laid down in the Golden Rule. There is comfort for those who mourn in the thought that having lived to the fullness of years as accorded to mankind—years spent in peace, contentment and right dealing with his fellow men—he has now entered into that rich reward held in reserve for those who put their trust in the God of human destiny.

Obituary- Kuykendall, Nimrod
Obituary- Kuykendall, Nimrod
Obituary.
Capt. Nimrod Kuykendall died at his home in this city Thursday morning, June 4, aged 81 years. He was born in Pendleton county, Virginia, May 21st, 1815, but for several years has resided in Rossville township. On September 15th, 1836, he was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Zickefoose, daughter of Sampson Zickefoose and sister to P.H. Zickefoose of this place. When he was 19 years of age he joined the Methodist church, to which he adhered some 25 years, after which he connected himself with the United Brethren church, of which he was ever after a member. He possessed deep religious convictions and great earnestness of purpose. During a large part of his religious career he held important and responsible positions in the church, and his pecuniary resources were freely used in helping to build churches and maintain stated services. His mind was a very active and fruitful one, and during the prime of his days he could readily clothe his ideas with words. He entered the army in 1861 and continued to serve his country to the end of the war. He was Captain of company K, West Virginia Volunteers.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Friday afternoon. The sermon was preached by Rev. R.E. Hill, of Topeka, who took his text from Rev. XXII:5: - "And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light; and they shall reign for ever and ever."

A large number of the deceased veteran's former comrades assembled to pay their final tribute of respect to the departed one and manifest their sympathy with Mrs. Kuykendall and other relatives who mourned the death of a tender husband and father and a worthy exemplar.

His remains were tenderly lowered to their last resting place by members of the Grand Army.

A good man has gone from among us. The following verses fitly describe the peaceful passing away of such an one:
How blest the righteous when he dies!
When sinks a weary soul to rest,
How mildly beam the closing eyes!
How gently heaves th' expiring breast!

A holy quiet reigns around,
A calm which life nor death destroys;
And naught disturbs that peace profound
Which his unfettered soul enjoys.

Life's [illegible] or done, as sinks the clay,
Light from its load the spirit flies,
While heaven and earth combine to say,
"How blest the righteous when he dies!"

Boyfriend Shoots Woman, Kills Self
from the “Topeka-Capital Journal”
A man with a 10-year history of domestic disturbances wounded his girlfriend and set their rented house on fire before killing himself Thursday afternoon, July 2, 1998, in rural Wabaunsee County, according to Sheriff Richard Old.

Old said he entered the burning house, located six miles north of Paxico, after hearing gunshots. The living room was fully engulfed in flames, and Gary Lacock, 41, was lying on the floor about 10 feet from the door.

Roseann Hale, 46, suffered a gunshot wound to the lower back. She fled the burning house. Hale was taken to a Topeka hospital by helicopter. She had surgery Friday and was moved out of intensive care. She remains in the hospital in serious condition.

“The woman told us he set the fire, tried to set her on fire, shot her and then shot himself,” Old said.

Old said two deputies responded to a call involving a domestic disturbance at 1:31 p.m. at the rural house. Officers heard a verbal conflict inside when they approached.

Then, two or three gunshots were fired, and Hale ran outside. The officers took her to safety behind their patrol cars. Moments later, the front window of the house blew out, presumably due to the heat from the fire, the sheriff said. Old then entered the house through the front door and discovered Lacock’s body.

Old attempted to put out the fire with a garden hose until other emergency help arrived. Emergency personnel on the scene included state troopers, fire trucks from neighboring communities, St. Marys Ambulance, and Life Flight helicopter from Topeka.

There was substantial damage to the front of the house, but the blaze was contained to a limited area. It appeared an accelerant was used to start the fire.

Walt Flowers, husband of Hale’s sister who had known Lacock for 25 or 30 years, said Hale had recently moved back in with Lacock and the Lacock may have thought Hale had been involved with other men.

“He really imagined Ann was fooling around on him, but she wasn’t,” Flowers said. “They had several problems in the past.”

Flowers said Lacock was a gun enthusiast. He said he had a bad feeling about the couple’s relationship.

“It sure seemed like he was headed for a hurting, one way or another,” Flowers said.

An autopsy was performed on Lacock Friday, Old said. However, toxicology reports will not be available for a few weeks.

Topeka shooting death an apparent suicide

A 48-year-old North Topeka woman apparently shot herself in the upper abdomen early Saturday as her 61-year-old boyfriend watched, officials said.

The woman, Mary J. Lacock, later died at a Topeka hospital.

Emergency personnel responded to a 911 call at 2:06 a.m. to Lacock's mobile home at 126 N.W. US-24. They found Lacock on the living room floor. Rescue workers said a single small-caliber bullet entered the upper abdomen and exited through the back.

Police recovered a weapon at the scene.

A Medevac MidAmerica ambulance crew worked several minutes to stabilize Lacock before transporting her to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. She underwent surgery there, but died at 4:55 a.m.,

[missing portion and part that doesn't belong]

Dr. Robert D. Jensen, Shawnee County deputy district coroner, performed an autopsy Saturday. Jensen said Lacock's death was a probable suicide, but a final ruling will not be made until forensic test results are received.
