Obituary- Aye, Ethel
Fear Does Sad Deeds
Parents compelled to Fill Their Child’s Grave With Their Own Hands
Tuesday morning little Ethel Aye, the 7 year old daughter of Wm. Aye, of 510 Van Buren street, died of diphtheria. The remains were encased in an air tight casket for burial. Yesterday the relatives prepared to take the remains to Rossville.
They were notified that the physician of Rossville, Dr. Miller, and two citizens Stratton and Binns, had become alarmed and ordered that the body should not be brought within the borders of Roseville, and that any citizen who should attend the funeral services would be quarantined for three weeks. Miss Anna Henrietta, who clerks at Stratton’s store, was told that should she attend the services, she would lose her position.
At Kingsville, three miles from Rossville, the funeral party was met by Mr. Scott Stroup, a relative of the Aye fam¬ily, and he told them of the order and took them over the hills to the Ross¬ville cemetery, which is one mile from the town.
There the little casket was lowered into the grave without a word of pray¬er from a minister, for the minister of Rossville was forbidden on penalty of three weeks' quarantine from attend¬ing. The grief stricken relatives and one man who braved the order of the "triumvirate,” lowered the body into the grave, and as no one could be procured to fill in the earth, the relatives had to do It.
The relatives then returned to this city. Upon their return they were visited by Dr. Miller and Mr. Stratton, who stated that they were very sorry for what they had done, and that "had they known who the child was, they would not have taken the action they did.”
But their apology came too late to soothe the hearts of those who had been compelled to bury a dear one with¬out a pastor’s prayer and had had to cover up the casket of their child with their own hands when their hearts were breaking with grief.

Obituary- Aye, William
WILLIAM MARION AYE
The body of Wm. Aye, was brought to Rossville Saturday on the noon train and taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry James where friends were given an opportunity to take a last glimpse of their old friend. Brief funeral services were conducted at the cemetery by the Rev H. L. Nelson of Topeka.
William Marion Aye was born at Newport, Indiana, April 10, 1844,died after a short illness April 12, aged 84 years and 2 days, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emma Engberg, in Kansas City, Mo., where he and his wife had been living for the past two years.
On January 9th of this year, Mr. and Mrs. Aye had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, he hav¬ing married Alice Stroup in 1878, and two daughters were born to this union, Emma and Ethel, the latter passing on in childhood.
Mr. Aye, when 9 years of age came to Kansas with his parents, one of a family of nine, overland from Marion, Ohio, to the then territory of Kansas. They settled on a claim on the Neosho river early in 1854. His mother died a short after they arrived. The father then brought the family to Tecumseh, where Mr. Aye lived with his mother’s sister, Mrs. Jess Stephenson, until at 10 he went to Ottumwa, Iowa, to learn the harness making trade. More active work was denied him as rheumatism and an accident had made of him a cripple when only 12.
He returned to Topeka and fol¬lowed his trade for 27 years, em¬ployed by the firm of Burkhardt & Oswold, then three years for James Warner in Maple Hill and the last 27 years of his active work were spent in his own little shop in Rossville.
Truthful, honest, kind and so pa¬tient, despite his handicap, no one ever heard him complain. He spoke no ill of others, believed in God and followed His commands. The Gold¬en Rule was his one and only creed. A kind friend and neighbor, a lov¬ing husband, father and grand¬father, he leaves to mourn his pass¬ing his wife, daughter, three grand-children, two of whom he was a se¬cond father, two great grandchildren and his only remaining brother, Mor¬ris, who is living in Fresno, Calif.

Wm. AYE DEAD
As we go to press this Thursday evening, word was received of the death of William Aye, at 5 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emma Engberg in Kansas City. His body will be brought here for burial.

Obituary- Badura, John 2
Head Blown Off With Dynamite.
John Badura, a Bohemian who worked for Joe Simecka on his farm about 4 miles east of Delia, was found dead in the field Monday afternoon with his head blown off.

He had left the house in the morning to grub out some willows in a ravine. When he did not come in for dinner the family went in search and found him in the willow patch with his head blown off. The neighbors were notified and Dr. Frisbey of Delia sent for who had the body removed to Delia to await the arrival of the coroner from Holton.

Mr. Simecka kept some dynamite in the house. Monday morning the hired man asked Mrs. Simecka where the dynamite was and she told him. It was missing when search was made for it. The coroner and county attorney came down Monday evening and after an inquiry among the dead man’s acquaintances they arrived at the conclusion that it was a case of suicide. It appears that the young man was disappointed in a love affair.

From all appearances Badura had placed the dynamite on top of his dead and then lit the fuse. Pieces of his skull were found in all directions in a radius of 150 feet.

The dead man was about 21 years old and a brother of Joe Badura, or “Badger,” as he is more commonly known. The body was taken to Joe’s home Tuesday and funeral services were held at the house, conducted by Rev. John Case, a Bohemian preacher from Wilson, Kans. Interment took place in the Bohemian cemetery.
