| 10551 |  | Obituary- Van Vleck, Gerald Jeff Van Vleck dies Gerald William (Jeff) Van Vleck, 44, a lifelong resident of the Rossville community, died Sunday at a Kansas City hospital. Jeff, as he was called, was known by almost everyone in this community and his death was a shock. He had been in failing health due to a heart condition. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Luella Van Vleck of the home; two daughters, Miss Emma Lee Van Vleck of Kansas City, and Laura Van Vleck of the home; four sons, Clifford, Charles, Richard and Parker, all of the home: a sister, Mrs. Lois O’Donnell of St. George; two brothers, Florene Van Vleck of California and Alvin Van Vleck of Kansas City, and his mother, Mrs. Emma Van Vleck of Kansas City. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. this afternoon at the Rossville Methodist church; burial will be in the Rossville cemetery. Rev. Don Jones will conduct the services and pallbearers are Clyde Rogers, Francis Pardee, Bob Rawlings, Joe Campbell, Jack Parr and Oscar Bixby. Arrangements were made by Hurley Funeral Home. | |
| 10552 |  | Obituary- Van Vleck, Harriet Mrs. T.J. Van Vleck Buried Here Yesterday Death came very quietly to Mrs. Thad J. Van Vleck last Saturday while she was at the home of her sister, Mrs. John A. Rich of Slater, Mo, having died a few minutes after leaving the house to go into the yard. She had left Rossville only about ten days previous after accompanying the body of her husband, T.J. Van Vleck, to Rossville from their home at San Bernardino, Calif, for burial on Feb. 6. His death occurred January 31. The body was brought to Ross¬ville Sunday night and held until the arrival of her son Joseph from New Brunswick, N.J. Funeral services were held yesterday at 11 o’clock in the Methodist church conducted by Rev. R.S. McCulloch. Interment was made in the family lot in the city cemetery. Hattie E. Reynolds was born in Winchendon, Worchester county, Mass., August 7, 1857 and had passed her 63rd birthday when death came February 26. She was united in marriage to Thadeus Van Vleck at Joliet, Ill February 11, 1878. To this union four children were born of whom two sons, J.R. Van Vleck of New Brunswick, N.J. and E.M. Van Vleck, of San Bernardino, Calif., survive. Two sisters, Mrs. J.M. Snyder of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. John A. Rich of Slater, Mo., also mourn her departure. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the friends and for¬mer neighbors of the family in this community, who greatly ad¬mired and respected the departed lady whose home here in the ear¬ly days was always open to young and old and an example for clean and wholesome living. | |

Van Vleck, son of the late Frank Van Vleck, was born north of Rossville, March 22, 1900, and, passed away July 16, 1937, at Redland, Calif., at the age of 37. He grew to manhood in this com¬munity; was married at Topeka in 1920, and from there moved to Cali¬fornia where he made his home until his death. He is survived by his wife, Vera; six brothers, Arthur and Clarence, of Topeka Mahlon, Harry and Floren of Kansas City, Mo., and Gerald of Rossville; one sister, Mrs. Lois McConnell of Rossville; two aunts, Mrs. Ella Shipley and Mrs. C.E. Van Vleck of Rossville. Burial was in Redlands, California. HENRY VAN VLECK The following item about the re¬cent death of Henry Van Vleck was taken from a Redland Calif, paper: Collapsing as he stepped from his automobile, Henry Van Vleck, 33 years old, Redlands iceman, died yesterday in front of his Tennessee street home of a heart attack. A familiar figure in the section west of Eureka street, Van Vleck had been delivering ice in Redlands for the past 14 years. However, three months ago he was placed on light work because of the ail¬ment. He was one of the oldest employees of the Redlands Ice Delivery Co. Arriving at his home for lunch after working all morning, Van Vleck parked his car. As he stepped out he was stricken. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Vara Van Vleck; one daughter; Mrs. V. Lunderville, Long Beach; and four brothers residing in Kansas. Word has been received of the death last Friday at Redland, Calif., of Henry Van Vleck 37, formerly of Rossville. Surviving are his two brothers, Clarence and A.I. Van Vleck, both of Topeka. Funeral ser¬vices and burial will be at Redland. | |
| 10554 |  | Obituary- Van Vleck, Herbert BERT VAN VLECK DEAD Word came to Rossville today of the death of Bert Van Vleck at 8:40 this morning. Rossville relatives had been at his bedside since the latter part of the week with his condition growing steadily more serious. As we go to press no funeral arrange¬ments had been announced. HERBERT EUGENE VAN VLECK The body of Bert Van Vleck, who died early Thursday, July 11, at his home in Topeka, was brought to Rossville cemetery Saturday afternoon, July 13, for burial. The funeral service was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Third Presbyterian church, Topeka, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Mr. Ireland Mr. Van Vleck, while a resident of Topeka for the past 25 years, had al¬ways looked upon Rossville as his old home town, in the vicinity of which he spent his early life, and received his schooling. He came to Rossville in 1881 from Gardner, Ill., where he was born on May 1, 1878. At the date of his death, July 11, he was 51 years, 2 months and 11 days old. Mr. Van Vleck was one of the lead¬ing interior decorators in Topeka. He was a member of the Odd Fel¬low and S.B.A. lodges. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, four daughters and two sons, Mrs. Grace Bradford, Mrs. Eve Mann Ella May, Marvin and Harold Van Vleck, all of Topeka; and Mrs. Eva Bradford of California; sisters, Mrs. Mabel Strimple, Lawrence and Mrs. Georgia Lambert, Silver Lake; brother, Wm. Shipley, San Bernardino, Calif.; and his mother and stepfather Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Shipley, of Ross¬ville. | |
| 10555 |  | Obituary- Van Vleck, Ila Ila Ellen Van Vleck Private graveside services will be Tuesday at Mount Hope Cemetery for Ila Ellen Van Vleck, 84, Evanston, Ill., formerly of Topeka, who died Sat¬urday, Sept. 10, 1994, at a retirement home in Evanston. She was born June 15, 1910, in Jacksonville, Fla., and lived in Topeka from 1945 until May 1994. She was married to Walter Van Vleck. They operated Van Vleck In¬vestments in Topeka. He survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Faye Spratley, Columbus, Ohio, and Louise Dickson, Evanston, Ill.; a brother, Thomas McClamma, Orange Park, Fla.; and four grandchildren. | 10557 |  | Obituary- Van Vleck, Irving Irving H. Van Vleck Irving H. Van Vleck, 83, Belfair, Wash., formerly of Topeka, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1992, at a Bremerton, Wash., hospital. He worked at McFarland Drug Store and later for Gibbs Clothing Company in Topeka over 30 years. He was born Dec. 9, 1908, in Ross¬ville, the son of Arthur I. and Mary Wax Van Vleck. He moved to Topeka in 1918 and to Belfair, Wash., in 1978. He was a 50-year member of Oak¬land IOOF Lodge No. 640 in Topeka. Survivors include a daughter, Pat Fisher; Union, Wash.; a brother. Ho¬mer G. Van Vleck, Prairie Village; two sisters, Ethel McGrew, Story, Ark., and Helen Murphy, Topeka; two grandchildren; and two great-grand¬children. Graveside services conducted by IOOF Lodge No. 640 will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rossville Cemetery. Mr. Van Vleck will lie in state after 10 a.m. Monday at Parker-Price Mortu¬ary in Topeka. She was born June 13, 1951 in Topeka the daughter of Afton and Alberta Bailey Womack. Judy married Omer Van Vleck July 8, 1966 in Platte City, Missouri. Judy worked as a day care provider for over 30 years. She was a member of the Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Riley Van Vleck and two brothers, Darrell and Gene Womack. She is survived by her husband of over 43 years, Omer Van Vleck of Rossville; three sons, Michael Van Vleck and his wife Holly of Willard, Larry Van Vleck of Rossville and Travis Van Vleck and his wife Beth of Rossville; three daughters, Lynette Renfro and her husband Kevin of Silver Lake, Misty Birdsong and her husband Justin of Topeka and Cristy Balch and her husband Jon of Rossville; two brothers, Jerry Womack of Silver Lake and Leonard Womack of Topeka; two sisters, Sharon Wheeler of Dover and Donna Roberts of Topeka and 21 grandchildren. Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene. | 10559 |  | Obituary- Van Vleck, Mary MRS. A.I. VAN VLECK Mrs. Mary I. Van Vleck, 71, of 188 Holman, Topeka, died Saturday morning in a Topeka hospital. She was born August 20, 1887, in Stan¬ton county and was brought to Rossville by her parents when she was a baby. She attended school in Rossville and was a former member of the Rossville Methodist church. She and Mr. Van Vleck were married here in 1906 and moved to Topeka in the fall of 1915. She was a member of the First Methodist church and Alrich Relief Corps No. 17 of Topeka. She is survived by her husband, Arthur I. Van Vleck; two sons, Hom¬er G. Van Vleck of Prairie Village and Irvin H. Van Vleck of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Ethel McGrew and Mrs. Helen Murphy of Topeka, one brother, Clinton C. Wax of Winter Park, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. George Reichman and Mrs. Bertha Myers of Topeka and Mrs. Anna Cotton of North Little Rock, Ark.; eight grandchildren: and six great-grandchildren. | 10560 |  | Obituary- Van Vleck, Mary A. 1 Death of Mrs. Joseph Van Vleck Mrs. Joseph Van Vleck passed away at 10 o'clock Wednesday forenoon, January 9, 1901, at the family home near this city. Heart trouble was the immediate cause of death, the first serious symptoms appearing about ten days ago. Mary A. Crane was born in Vermont September 9, 1821. In 1844 she was married to Mr. Joseph Van Vleck in New York state. They came to Rossville township in 1880 and have resided here continuously ever since. Mrs. Van Vleck was a member of the M.E. Church from early childhood and was a most devout Christian lady. The aged husband and six grown children survive her. The funeral was held from the M.E. Church in this city yesterday (Friday) morning at 11 o'clock, and a very large circle of friends paid their last respects to a loved and honored friend and neighbor. Rev. C.N. She apparently had a liver ailment. Se was born Sept. 29, 1924, in Topeka. She had lived in Germany, California, and Texas, but spent most of her life in Topeka. She attended Faith Assembly of God Church. She was married to Frank Van Vleck Sept. 15, 1942, at Holton. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Frank D. Van Vleck, 43091 S.E. McMahan Court, Tecumseh, and Ronald A. | 10565 |  | Obituary- Van Vleck, Olivia Died, at her home five miles north of Rossville, Tuesday, August 29, 1901, Mrs. F.H. Van Vleck, aged 41 years, after a lingering illness. The deceased was born in Jackson county, Indiana, in 1860, and removed with her parents to Minnesota in 1867, and came to Kansas in 1871, where she has since resided. She was married to F.H. Van Vleck the 18th day of April, 1880. She was the mother of nine children, seven of whom are living to mourn her death. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.G. Maver of Topeka, from the M.E. Church in this city, Sunday, September 1st, in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends after which the remains were interred in the Rossville cemetery. | 10566 |  | Obituary- Van Vleck, Omer ROSSVILLE - Omer Leo Van Vleck, 85, died Friday, March 30, 2007 at the St. Marys Manor. He was born May 5, 1921 in Rossville, the son of Walter and Bessie Gutshal Van Vleck. He graduat4ed from Rossville High School and lived all of his life in the Rossville community. He managed Van Vleck Oil Station for 45 years. He was a member of the Rossville Christian Church and was the oldest member of the church being baptized in 1934. Omer also was a member of the Rossville Senior Center. He enjoyed bowling and gambling. He was married to Ann Van Vleck on Oct. 30, 1956, at Burlinton, KS. She died on Aug. 22, 2002. Mr. Van Vleck was also preceded in death by a son, Eric Hinterweger on Dec. 15, 1998. Survivors include a son Omer Lee Van Vleck, Rossville; a daughter Sharon Landreth, Junction City; a daughter-n-law Betty Cummings, St. Marys; a brother Marvin Van Vleck, Athens, GA; a sister Gladys Chilson, in Washington; 10 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2007 at the Rossville Christian Church. Interment will be in the Rossville Cemetery. Van Vleck, 52, Lucedale, formerly of Rossville, Kan., died Friday, May 10, 1996, at a hos¬pital in nearby Mobile, Ala., where he was admitted Thursday after he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. He was born April 6, 1944, in Kansas City, Mo., and spent most of his life in Rossville, Kan. He moved to Lucedale a few years ago. He was married to Judy Farley. She survives. Other survivors include four sons, Edward Van Vleck, Walter Van Vleck, Thomas Van Vleck and Simon Van Vleck, all in Lucedale, Miss.; two brothers, Clif¬ford Van Vleck and Charles Van Vleck, both in Topeka; and two sisters, Laura Thomas, Salina, and Mary Kay Neidfeldt, McFarland, Kan. Mr. Van Vleck was cremated. Memorial services were Sunday in Lucedale, Miss. | |
| 10569 |  | Obituary- Van Vleck, Thaddeus 1 Thaddeus J. Van Vleck son of Joseph and Mary Van Vleck was born in Addison, New York, June 17, 1851, moving to Ill., with his parents when a child. Early in life he was converted in the Christian faith. He was married to Hattie E. Reynolds of Joliet, Ill., Feb. 10, 1874 and to this union was born 4 children, two sons and two daughters. The little daughters, Myrtle and Jennie having died in infancy. In 1878 he and family moved to Kansas onto a farm north of Rossville, when the country was new. Their home was always open to the young people and to the old people as well and they gained many friends. In 1905 he moved to Colorado, and about one year ago to San Bernardino, Calif., where he passed away Jan. 31, 1921. Age 69 years 7 months and 14 days. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Edgar Van Vleck of San Bernardino and Joseph Van Vleck of Brunswick, New Jersey. Of this neighborhood by his two brothers, Frank and C.E. Van Vleck and sister Mrs. R.A. Shipley. A brother Mahlon of Chicago and sister Carrie Putnam of Pueblo, Colo. | |

Van Vleck are expected here Saturday from California and the funeral will be held Sunday after¬noon at 2 o’clock at the Metho¬dist church. Interment in Rossville cemetery. Mr. Van Vleck died last Sun¬day evening at his home in San Bernardino, Calif., from a paraletic [sic] stroke he suffered about two weeks previous. He was one of the early day citizens of Rossville township breaking out the John Taylor farm and last living on the present Jas. Rezac farm. He left Rossville nearly thirty years ago moving to Topeka where he lived for many years. After leaving Topeka he moved to Colorado and a little over one year ago went to California. He is survived m this neigh¬borhood by his brothers Frank and C.E. Van Vleck and his sister, Mrs. R.A. Shipley. One brother Malon lives in Chicago. His own family survivors are his widow and two sons. | |

Van Vleck died at 5:30 p.m. last Thursday at the tuberculosis camp southeast of Topeka, where he had been taken for his health a few months previous. Mr. Van Vleck had never recovered his health after an attack of the Flu a few years ago. He was born in Rossville, July 27, 1889, being just past his 82nd birthday when his death occurred and had lived here all his life. Beside his widow, Mrs. Bessie Van Vleck, he is survived by five children, Gladys, Walter, Frank, Marvin and Omer; his father, Frank Van Vleck, a sister, Mrs. J.C. Reser of Manhattan, five brothers, A.I., C.E., and Henry of Topeka. Mahlon Van Vleck of Kansas City and Harry of Rossville. The funeral service was held from the Rossville Methodist church conducted by Rev. Saterlee of the Lowman Hill church, Topeka, Sunday afternoon, Aug. 21. Interment was made in Rossville cemetery. | 10572 |  | Obituary- Vance, Willard Willard Vernon Vance ROSSVILLE — Willard Vernon Vance, 90, formerly of Havensville, died Monday, Aug. 23, 1995, at a Rossville nursing home. Mr. Vance was a farmer and stockman and had lived in Havensville since 1963. He earlier had lived in Elmont. He was born March 19, 1903, in Jackson County, the son of Samuel Edward and Rebecca Merriweather Vance. Mr. Vance was a member of the Buck's Grove United Methodist Church, east of Havensville. He was married to Thelma Roberson on Nov. 18, 1934, in Elmont. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Geraldine Fouts, Maple Hill; two sons, Edwin C. Vance, Soldier, and James F. "Frank” Vance, Onaga; a sister, Edna M. Vance, Topeka; four grandchildren and two step grandchildren. Services will be at IO a.m. Thursday at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be at Buck s Grove Cemetery east of Havensville. Relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. | 10573 |  | Obituary- Vanderbilt, James James R. "Rick" Vanderbilt St. Marys-James Richard "Rick" Vanderbilt, 65, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at Oakley Place of Rossville. He was born March 6, 1953 at Trenton, NJ. the son of James E. and Marie Williams Vanderbilt. Rick grew up in the Trenton area and graduated from Mercer County Community College. He was an operations manager for a printing company before moving to St Marys. Rick owned and operated the Cottage Inn Restaurant in Belvue for 32 years. On April 26, 1975 he was united in marriage to Teresa "Terry" McMahon at Hamilton Square, NJ. She survives of the home. | 10578 |  | Obituary- Vanderputten, Maria Maria Christina Van der Putten Maria Christina Van der Putten, 80, of Bolivar died Friday, July 29,2016 at Citizens Memorial Hospital, Bolivar, due to complications resulting from a fall. She was born Dec. 3,1935, in Arnhem, Holland, the daughter of Gerardus and Maria Verhaaf and one of eight children. She immigrated to Canada when she was about 18. She and John Van der Putten were married in 1957, and to this union were born 13 children, 10 boys and three girls. In 1961 they moved to the United States, settling in southern California, where they lived for many years. They moved to Ohio in 1971, where they operated an apple orchard and cider mill for several years. In 1978, deciding to move on, they settled briefly in the Houston, Texas, area. Then they moved to Missouri after a year. Eventually they bought a farm in Polk County, where they raised blueberries and other farm produce for many years. They also operated a greenhouse and fruit stand in the town of Bolivar. After her husband’s death in 1997, Maria continued to live on the family farm until the time of her death, being cared for by several of her children. She is survived by all of her children, Maria Matties and husband David of Dickinson, Texas, John of the home, Gino and wife Anne of Loveland, Ohio, Joseph and wife Lysanne of St Marys, Vincent and wife Leane of Rossville, Benedict and wife Precious of Shawnee, Okla., Dominic and wife Cathy of St. Marys, Fran and wife Lori of Fair Play, Chris and wife Renee of Bolivar, the Rev. Father Angelo Van der Putten of Nigeria, Africa, Anna Seeley and husband Mike of Paxico, Damien and wife Danielle of Irving, Texas, and Sister Mary Hosanna (Shalome) of Post Falls, Idaho; as well as more than 100 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was born on February 24,1932 in Emmett the son of Charles J. and Christina (DeLeye) Vande Velde. Bernard served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Bernard was a plumber and pipefitter working out of Local # 165 before he retired in 1986. He then worked for Topeka School District 501 as a plumber from 1986 to 1997. He was a craftsman and enjoyed gardening, music, baseball, but most of all spending time with family. Bernard was a charter member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, life member of the Knights of Columbus and Local Union #165. He was married to Roberta L. Murry on May 24, 1955 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Delia. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters; Sherryll (Steve) Flatt of Double Oak, TX, Linda Tinsley and Robbyn Vande Velde both of Topeka. Lorraine was the office manager for Paramount Pest Control in Topeka for many years, retiring this past January. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys and enjoyed music and the theater. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a daughter, Christy Gouge, on Aug. 26, 2006. Lorraine was united in marriage to James Vande Velde on Oct.14, 1982. They had their marriage blessed in the Catholic Church in 1990. He survives of the home. She was born Aug. 3, 1936, at Windsor, Mo., the daughter of Oliver F. and Florence L. Macha Tuller. As a young girl she lived in Wisconsin and moved to the Delia and Rossville communities where she attended Rossville High School and Clarks School of Business in Topeka. Lorraine was the office manager for Paramount Pest Control in Topeka for many years retiring this past January. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Marys and enjoyed music and the theater. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Christy Gouge on Aug. 26, 2006. Lorraine was united in marriage to James Vande Velde on Oct. 14,1982. They later had their marriage blessed in the Catholic Church in 1990. He survives of the home. She was a member of the Holy Cross Church at Emmett and the Altar Society of the Church. She served as chairman of the Social Concerns Committee of the Parish Council. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and served during 1969. He married Vicki Myers January 27, 1968, at Topeka. She survives. On August 1, 1939 she was united in marriage to Raymond Vande Velde at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newbury. He preceded her in death on December 6, 1966.
