Roy Harding Dies

Word was received here Monday evening by Mrs. W.H. Courtney of the death of her son-in-law, Roy Harding, at the family home near Pauline, just south of Topeka.

Mr. Harding had been in poor health several years, but for the past several months had been seriously ill, and his death had been expected momentarily for several weeks. Death was due to cancer or tuberculosis of the bladder.

Mr. Harding lived in the Delphos community a number of years, and was a Past-Master of the Delphos Masonic lodge. He was almost 43 years of age, and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lottie Courtney Harding, and two sons, Roy Jr., and Darrell Dean. He is also survived by two sisters.

Funeral services will be held this Thursday morning from the Delphos Methodist Church, with Rev. L.R. Fish in charge. The masons will have charge of the grave service.

May 3, 1934
ROY C. HARDING
Roy Clifford Harding was born in Rossville, Kansas on the 27th day of November, 1891, and departed this life for the better world, from his home on Route No. 1, one-half mile north of Pauline, Kansas, Monday afternoon, April 23, at the age of 42 years, 4 months and 27 days.

Roy was a great lover of nature – the flowers of the field and the birds of the air had a message for him, and in his last hours he gained much comfort from these emblems of God's great love for His children.

He was much in love with his work in the Church, and was never happier than when working with his boys in the Sunday School, who returned his love, and will miss him so much.

He was a member of the Delphos Methodist Episcopal Church and was also a member and past master of Masonic Lodge No. 202 of Delphos, and while unable to attend the services of the lodge in the past 2 or 3 years, he gained much comfort in talking of the lessons received in the work of the lodge.

He was also at one time a member of the Kansas National Guard.

He was united in marriage on the 22nd day of September, 1915 to Miss Charlotte Courtney of Delphos, Kansas, and to this union two sons were born. He was a devoted husband, and a kind and loving father. He was so appreciative of all that was done for him, and all thru his suffering was so patient.

He leaves to mourn his going but not as those who have no hope, his wife, two sons, Roy Jr. and Darrel Dean, of the home address; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Ruddy of Davenport, Ia., and Mrs. Flora Peterson of Milwaukee, Wis., and a host of other friends and neighbors whose lives have been enriched by his coming and going.

Funeral services were held at the Delphos Methodist Church, Thursday morning at 10 o'clock in charge of Rev. L.R. Fish. The body was taken to the Delphos Cemetery for interment with the Masonic Lodge conducting the graveside service.

Obituary- Harper, Joyce
Obituary- Harper, Joyce
Joyce Marie Harper
Chapel Hill, NC- Mrs. Joyce Marie Harper, 73, died Tuesday December 5, 2017 at the SECU Jim & Betsey Bryan Hospice Home in Pittsboro, NC. Joyce was born to the late Walden Howard Swenson and Pauline Fenton Swenson on July 16, 1944 in Concordia Kansas. She was raised in rural Kansas where the heartland values of honor, honesty, and integrity were deeply ingrained. Joyce attended Kansas State University and Northern Illinois University, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Therapy. She later earned her Master’s Degree in Deaf Education from the University of North Florida.
Joyce was a passionate educator; her unique teaching style, patience, and persistence could bring out the absolute best in children with severe challenges and send them on the path to success. She truly left no student out or behind, and became the teacher other teachers sought out when they had exhausted their ability to help a child in their classroom. She was known as a fierce advocate for the preschool children with special needs who otherwise had no voice; she believed that every child deserved the opportunity to start kindergarten in their neighborhood school, and fought tirelessly to teach her students the skills to get there. In our family she was most loved for ‘Grandmommy School’, where she cherished the chance to teach her grandsons, Benjamin and William, how to read, do math, and follow directions. Joyce ended her working career as a financial officer in the family business.
Joyce was a fantastic cook, and enjoyed entertaining friends and family. She hosted company Christmas parties complete with her famous beef tenderloin and chicken pasta salad, neighborhood dinner parties, and endless family get-togethers. Joyce was an extremely proud PEO Sister who fully embraced the organization’s efforts and served as president for several years.
Joyce loved to travel, and over the last fifteen years of her life saw the world. She enjoyed over 20 ocean and river cruises, trips to Europe, Russia, Africa, India, China, Vietnam, New Zealand, and Australia. She was the travel planner for the family; her extraordinary organizational skills ensured that she and her family got the most out of their trips.
Above everything else, Joyce was deeply devoted to and loved her family. After meeting her husband Steve at Northern Illinois University, they married in 1970 after 6 years of dating. Together they shared an adventurous life filled with raising two daughters, 10 moves during their marriage, and countless trips where they were able to visit most parts of the world. Joyce loved spending time with her two sisters and her parents, week long summer beach trips with her extended family, hosting family holiday and birthday parties, and taking her 90-something year old mother on Caribbean cruises during the winter. Her dedication to and love for her daughters and grandchildren was remarkable, and her legacy will live on through them.
Joyce is survived by her husband Stephen Kent Harper; daughters, Jill Harper Barham and Stephanie Harper Carmody; sons-in-law, Brandon Barham and Dennis Carmody; grandsons, Benjamin Michael Barham and William Stephen Barham; granddaughter to be Anna Stephanie Barham; sister Diane Vaught; brothers-in-law, Dennis Harper and Galen Kersten; sisters-in-law, Sue Kersten and Susie Harper; nephews, Creighton Vaught, Dean Harper, Scott Kersten, Jeff Kersten and families; and nieces, Sherri Gibson, Lori Duncan, Brenda Jacobs, Michelle Rockwood, Lana States and families.
A Memorial Service will be held at University United Methodist Church on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, NC on Saturday December 16, 2017 at 3pm with a reception immediately after the service. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development http://autismcenter.duke.edu/content/make-donation-today or the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation’s CMT2C Research Fund https://www.hnf-cure.org/cmt-2c/ . Obituary- Hartzell, Cora
Death of Mrs. Cora Hartzell
Seldom has our little town been shocked as it was at the sudden death of Mrs. Cora A. Hartzell, the young wife of Leroy P. Hartzell. She retired late Saturday night, apparently in perfect health, but when Leroy awoke at five o'clock on Sunday morning she was unconscious and died at half past ten that night.

She was born near Rossville, Ks., November 17, 1879, and has always lived in this community. She was married March 18, 1903. Her married life, though so short, was one of supreme happiness, and afflicted husband, parents and brothers, have the deepest sympathies of the entire community.

The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning. The large audience assembled to pay their last respects, testified to the love and esteem which the community bore her. The services were conducted by the Rev. H.L. Nelson, Pastor of the Presbyterian church, of which she was an earnest and consistent member. The Pastor was assisted by the Rev. Mr. Otto, Pastor of the Methodist church As a text the minister used the appropriate word of the Psalmist, "Be still and know that I am God."

The floral offerings were beautiful and elaborate. In addition to those made by the immediate relatives, there was one by the Sabbath School, placed upon the casket. On an easel at the side of the pulpit was a large C. E. The C mad of white and the E with the C made of red flowers. This was a tribute from the Christian Endeavor Society of which she was an active member. Her vacant seat in the choir was draped in mourning.

We shall miss her. One teacher has gone to their reward; one voice of the choir has been silenced; one active Endeavourer has fulfilled her pledge; one sweet soul will move among us no more, for she is gone. The entire community moves beneath a pall. Her life was brief, and like the snow flake, she left her mark but not a stain.

Hartzell Family History

David Hartzell was born Sept. 29, 1844 and died Jan. 28, 1937 at the age of 92. He came to Kansas in 1867, residing at Ozawkie and other points before coming to Rossville in 1872. During that year he and M.F. Tatman opened a drug store under the firm name of Hartzell and Tatman. It was the gathering place for a congenial bunch of old cronies of the partners for many years. The building burned about 1920. Mr. Hartzell retired about 1927 and the post office soon occupied the space he vacated. At the present time, 1971, the entire building is occupied by the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Hartzell was known as "Daddy" Hartzell to many during his 55 years service to the public as a druggist in Rossville.

David Hartzell and Matilda Jane Boots were married Feb. 21, 1875. She came to Rossville with her father, Benjamin F. Boots and brother Melvin in Aug. 1872 from Pen Yan, New York after her mother died in 1871. A brother, James Boots, came to Rossville in 1870. Her father's business was building and contracting. Mrs. Hartzell, Tillie, was born Sept. 25, 1851, Sturgis, Michigan, died Feb. 2, 1953, age 101. She was active in the community and church life. She was the Financial Secretary of the Knights and Ladies of Security, later known as the Security Benefit Assoc., for many years. Grandmother Hartzell, as she was known to many, was noted for her wonderful memory.

Mr. and Mrs. Hartzell were the parents of Ernest, LeRoy, Edna (Mrs. Walter Salley), Frank and Melvin.

David Hartzell Last of Early Day Business Men Claimed By Death

David Hartzell, aged 92 years, 4 months, and 1 day, passed away about 1:00 a.m. last Friday morning. Infirmities of old age had been gradually wearing down the rugged strength he had enjoyed throughout his long life. His passing saddened his friends and relatives who had seen him overcome previous periods of physical weakness to be able to up and around. Death came easily and peacefully as going to sleep.

He was affectionately known as "Daddy" Hartzell to countless friends and acquaintances made during his fifty-five years service to the public as druggist in Rossville. He was 28 years old when he and M.F. Tatman opened a drug store here in 1872 under the firm name of Hartzell & Tatman. It was the gathering place for a congenial bunch of old cronies of the partners, for many years, and when it burned down about 17 years ago only those who have lost something near and dear, can realize what the loss of it meant to Mr. Hartzell.

He later opened up again in strange quarters, the room now occupied by the post office and carried on until about 10 years ago when he retired. Since then he occupied himself about the old home but of late years seldom was seen "up town."

Mr. Hartzell was a native of Ohio where he was born Sept. 28, 1844. He first came to Kansas in 1867, residing for a time at Ozawkie and other points, for five years before coming to Rossville. Three years after coming here on February 21, 1875 he was united in marriage to Matilda Boots. They would have passed their 62nd wedding anniversary the 21st of this month.

Of the five children born to this union, all are living, to aid and comfort their mother, who, too is nearing the ninth decade of her life. They are Ernest D., Leroy P. of Rossville; Mrs. Edna Salley, Silver Lake, Frank D. of Chillicothe, Ill., and Melvin B. of Seattle, Wash. There are also 22 grand children and 8 great grandchildren.

Early in life Mr. Hartzell was baptized in the German Reformed Church.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. H.E. Straw.

Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Estel Bailey, Dr. and Mrs. John Shenk and Phillip Hartzell with Miss Ruth Salley as accompanist. Mr. Phil Hartzell a grandson sang a solo.

As a tribute to the deceased all the pall bearers were grandsons, namely Orville, Ralph, Allyn, Clyde, Phillip and Richard Hartzell.

Interment was in Rossville cemetery. The almost impassable conditions of the roads made it necessary for the procession to go east of town on Perry street, thence across a field to the cemetery.

Card of Thanks - The family of the late David Hartzell wish to sincerely thank all friends for assistance and will hold in grateful memory all those offering sympathy and floral offerings in the time of their bereavement.

Mrs. David Hartzell and Family
