She had a heart attack. She was born Sept. 10, 1890, in Kentucky and lived in the Rossville community the past 65 years. She had been employed in restaurants at Rossville and Silver Lake many years. Her husband, Walter Startup, died Feb. 5,1972. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Cook, Las Vegas, Nev., and Mrs. Mabel Sommer, Kansas City, Kan.: seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Park Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. He was born Nov. 4, 1890, in Rossville and spent all his life here. He was a laborer. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Rossville. Survivors include two sisters, Mae Startup of Rossville and Mrs. Netta McKeown, Wichita. Services were held Monday morning at the Presbyterian Church with burial in Rossville Cemetery. | 10055 |  | Obituary- Startup, Eugenia Eugenia H. Startup Eugenia Hazel Startup, 82, Oroville, WA, died Tuesday, October 26, 1999, in Washington state. She was born February 18, 1917, at Delia, the daughter of Frank and Anna Fleming. She married Averill Startup September 30,1935. He survives. The couple moved from Kansas to the Roaring Fork Valley, Washington, in 1939, and lived in Carbondale, Aspen and Glenwood Springs, CO, for many years before moving to Oroville, WA last spring. In addition to her husband, Eugenia is survived by a daughter, Jeaneen Thompson, Williams Lake, British Columbia; two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Agnes Crawshaw, Silver Lake; and Melva Marney, New Castle, WA; a brother, Frank Fleming, Elmont; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Florine Perry, St. Marys. Mrs. Startup was cremated. Her ashes were taken to Canada and spread on the meadow the couple had bought for a homestead. A memorial service will be held December 12 in the Rossville Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. for family and friends. Eugenia Startup ROSSVILLE — Memorial services for Eugenia Hazel Startup, 82, Oroville, Wash., will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 12,1999, at the Rossville Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Startup died Oct. 26, 1999, in Washington State. She was cremated and her ashes were taken to Canada to be spread over a meadow. She and her husband moved to the Roaring Fork Valley in Washington in 1939 and lived in several other places, including Carbondale, Aspen, Colo., and Glenwood Springs, Colo., before moving to Oroville, Wash., earlier this year. She was born Feb. 18,1917, in Delia, the daughter of Frank and Anna Fleming. Mrs. Startup was a homemaker. She was a member of the Eastern Star. She married Averill Startup on Sept. 30, 1935. He survives. | 10056 |  | Obituary- Startup, Frank Frank Startup Frank Startup died this morning (Monday) at 2:45 o'clock at the family home 222 1/2 East Main street, in the Hetrick building. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 4 o'clock from the First Methodist church, in charge of the Rev. H.W. Todd, and burial made in Elmwood cemetery. Mr. Startup was 8 years of age and had resided in this county since 1867. He was engaged in farming until recent years when the family moved to town and had charge of the Hetrick rooms. Mr. Startup had been in poor health for the past three years but was sick only a few days previous to his death which was due to a nervous breakdown. Mrs. Startup and three children survive. The daughters are Mrs. Joe Cooper and Miss Dais Startup and the son is James Startup, all of this city. Three brothers also survive. They are Abner, of Topeka, Charles of Tulsa, Okla., and J.C. Startup of Rossville. --Chanute Daily Tribune Mr. J.C. Startup who was called to Chanute last week by his brother's illness, returned to Rossville yesterday. | |
| 10057 |  | Obituary- Startup, Garelton 1 Garley Startup the Victim of Tragic Accident Garley C. Startup, aged 29, one of our young farmers living three-quarters of a mile south of the Kingsville station, died last night at 8 o’clock from the injuries received about 9 a.m. yesterday when he was struck by Union Pacific train No. 106, the morning “Plug” at the crossing just west of the Kingsville depot. Mr. Startup had gone to the Kingsville school house to secure the Overland car owned by his uncle, Ed James, which had been driven to the school house by Miss Vina James, the teacher of Kingsville school. Mr. Startup’s own car had stalled and as he was preparing to take his little son to Topeka to see a doctor, he asked for the James car. He had started back to his home from the school house. The road jogs to the east a short distance before turning at right angles to cross the tracks and it is presumed he was in a deep study that he did not notice the oncoming train until it was too late to stop altho the ground showed he had slid the wheels several feet before the front wheels were struck by the train. The automobile was tossed clear of the track on the north side and totally demolished. Mr. Startup sustained a compound fracture of the left arm, a broken lower jaw, and the left side of his face was badly bruised and skinned. The train stopped and Startup was taken to Stormont hospital in Topeka. Several Rossville people were on the train but from papers scattered about it was thought at first the injured man was Mr. Ed James, and it was so reported in Rossville. This report was corrected shortly afterward but not until relatives had been severely shocked. Mr. Startup never regained consciousness before his death. As we go to press today funeral arrangements have not been made. Mr. Startup is the son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Reser and the son of J.C. Startup. He is survived by his widow and two children, his father and four brothers. | |
| 10058 |  | Obituary- Startup, Garelton 2 Garley Crit Startup was born May 13, 1893, at Duke Okla., lost his life Oct. 24, 1922, from injuries received when Union Pacific train No. 106 crashed into his auto on a crossing at Kingsville, Kansas, aged 29 years, 5 months and 11 days. He was the eldest son of J.C. and Esther Startup and was brought to Rossville at the age of two years and grew to manhood in this vicinity. For the past four years he with his family have occupied a farm south of Kingsville. He was united in marriage January 31, 1912, to Agnes Reser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Reser. To this union two children were born, Averl and Velma, who with the widow survive to mourn his untimely death. In 1915 he affiliated with the United Brethren church. His funeral was held in the Rossville Methodist church, Saturday Oct. 28, conducted by the Rev. Job Wykert, a U.B. minister and assisted by the Rev. Basquin. The pall bearers were Lawrence and Bido Mitchell, Leo Cooley, Harold Herrington, William Lambert and Paul Small. Beside the wife and children he is survived by his father, J.C. Startup, the mother, Mrs. Esther Strahn, three brothers, Harry of Topeka; Fred and Myron of Rossville; and two half-brothers, Hallie of Silver Lake; and Walter of Newton. | 10059 |  | Obituary- Startup, Guy Guy E. Startup Guy Startup, 77, died Saturday in a Topeka hospital where he had been taken the previous Thursday, after a fall in the yard at his home. Mr. Startup was a native of this community, the son of the late Ab Startup, and spent his entire life here and in surrounding communities. He was born Aug. 14, 1876, in Rossville. Most of his early years was devoted to clerical work in stores here and for a time he was in the hardware business in Delia. Of late years he had devoted his energies to house painting. Mr. Startup had served as a city and township officer and until his health broke was clerk of the City. Surviving him are two brothers, Walter of Rossville; Bennett of Yakima, Wash., and one sister Della Startup, of the home. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Hurley Funeral Home, conducted by the Reverend Douglas Donovan, pastor of the Rossville Christian church. Music was furnished by Maxine Trimble and Lorene Harth, with Mrs. Wm. Hil at the piano. Pallbearers were Billy Hesse, Wm. Lambert, Perry Stumbaugh, Floyd Parks, Clyde Strimple and Glen Marney. Interment was in Rossville cemetery. --- Guy Startup Guy Startup, 76, died Saturday at a local hospital. Born in Rossville, he owned a hardware in Delia before his retirement. He was a member of the Rossville Methodist Church. Surviving are two brothers, Walter R. Startup, Rossville, and Bennett Startup, Yakima, Wash., and a sister, Miss Della Startup, Rossville. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mamie Startup, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Clara Bowers and Mrs. Mildred Pinkston, both of Topeka; three brothers, Walter Startup, Redlands, Calif.; Harry Startup, Topeka; and Myron Startup, Orian, Ill.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. | 10062 |  | Obituary- Startup, John Crit Startup John Christopher Startup was born in Macomb, Ill., May 29, 1860, and passed away at his home in Rossville, March 15, 1937, at the age of 76 years, 9 months and 15 days after a short illness. Mr. Startup came to Kansas with his parents in 1866. From that period until 1891 he lived at Parsons and Chanute Kansas and in Texas. Since 1891 he had made his home in or near Rossville. He was a member of the United Brethren church. Surviving are his widow; five sons Harry, of Topeka; Walter of Redland, Calif., Hally, of Silver Lake, Fred of Wakefield, Kan., and Myron of Moline, Ill., two brothers, Charles of Seminole, Okla., and Albert of Rossville; eleven grand children and a great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 o'clock from the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. H.L. Nelson. Music was furnished by a ladies quartet composed of Mrs. Fannie Reser, Mrs. Arline Reid, Mrs. Ruth Hesse, Mrs. Minnie Navarre and Mrs. Mabel Eversole accompanied at the piano. | 10065 |  | Obituary- Startup, Vernadell Headstone says DOD - 27 April 1915 Vernadell Startup Dead The final summons came Sunday night April 27, calling from our midst little Vernadell Margaret Startup, "who had lingered between life and death for several days," to the great wonderland beyond the stars. The funeral services were held at the Startup home on South Main Street, conducted by the Rev. H.L. Nelson, of Topeka, assisted by the Rev. G.A. Chatfield of Rossville. Owing to the fact that the child's death was due to a backset of the measles, it was thought best to not have a public funeral and f9ollow out the letter of the law concerning deaths resulting directly or indirectly from contagious diseases. Vernadell was born in Los Angeles, California, July 17, 1907, being 5 years 9 months and 10 days old, but she now sleeps in the arms of Jesus where she will wake in a brighter world, which may be nearer us than we now -- perhaps only a thin veil that hides our vision is all that separates her from us. She will be missed by all who knew her. By her teacher and classmates in Sunday school where her bright little face always wore a smile for everyone. By the neighbors and friends with whom she was a favorite. At home no one can fill her place, and the sympathy of the community is with the bereaved home. For several weeks before taking to his bed he complained of ill-health which finally terminated in typhoid fever and his weakened vitality was unable to cope with the disease. Mr. Startup came to Kansas when a young man from Mount Vernon, Ohio, his birth place. At the time of his death he was 58 years old. He leaves a wife and three children, May, Nettie and Cecil. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Saturday at 10 o'clock a.m., conducted by the Rev. H.L. Nelson. Burial took place in the city cemetery. | |

She was found by her husband who was awakened by the crying of their infant daughter, born about two weeks ago. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Church, with interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery by the Verschelden Funeral Home. The rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening. Mrs. Stattelman was born July 10, 1934, in St. Marys and was graduated from St. Marys High School. She was married to Robert Stattelman, Nov. 25, 1953, at the Immaculate Conception Church. Survivors include: her husband, Robert, and three daughters: Vickie, Margaret Ann, and Barbara Jo, all of the home; her father: William Bond, Alma; a brother: William Bond Jr., Tulsa, Okla.; and a sister: Mrs. Amelia Flanagan, Emmett. St. Marys Woman’s Cause of Death Told ST. MARYS – Mrs. Mary Jo Stattelman, 32, who died Dec. 6 at her home here, died of a massive pulmonary embolism, a physician reported Monday. He said Mrs. Stattelman had a blood clot in her lung. Relatives of Mrs. Stattelman had said she hadn’t been ill. An autopsy was performed later Dec. 6, but results weren’t immediately available until microscopic studies were completed. | |
| 10069 |  | Obituary- Stauffer, Arlene Mrs. Arlene L. Stauffer HOLTON — Mrs. Arlene L. Stauffer, 65, Holton, died Saturday at her home. She suffered an apparent heart attack. She was born June 14, 1915, at St. Clere, the daughter of Ivan and Ethel Robbins Stuver. She lived in the Holton community for the past 40 years. Mrs. Stauffer worked in the Holton High School lunch room for 15 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Holton. She was married to Thayne Stauffer on March 26, 1941, at Soldier. He survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Matthews, Onaga, and Mrs. Tharon Gay Brey, Whiting; a son, Rodney Stauffer, Holton; her father, Ivan Stuver, Holton; a sister, Mrs. Geraldine Bolin, Tecumseh, Neb.; a brother, Kenneth Stuver, Topeka; and seven grandchildren. | 10070 |  | Obituary- Stauffer, Auswell Auswell Fisher Stauffer HOLTON - Auswell Fisher Stauffer, 91, of Holton died Friday, June 17,2005. Auswell was born May 8, 1914, in the Pleasant Valley Community west of Holton. He was the son of Russell A. and Charlotte Stephenson Stauffer. He graduated from Circleville High School in 1932. Auswell was a farmer and stockman and a long-time area cowboy. He owned and operated Stauffer Salvage and Supply and had also worked at the Holton Livestock Exchange for more than 40 years. He was a member of Circleville United Methodist Church and was the superintendent of the Circleville United Methodist Sunday School, and a club leader for Pleasant Valley Rustlers 4-H. He was on the Pleasant Valley School Board, the Circleville High School Board, and he was a Banner Township Democratic Committeeman. Auswell married Vinita G. Linsacum on April 29,1936, in Holton. She survives. He is also survived by sons, Russell E. Stauffer, Sabetha, Auswell F. "Bud" Stauffer, Jr., Mayetta, Bradford W. Stauffer, Eudora; daughter Sharon E. Stauffer Goldsworthy, Germantown, Tenn.; brother Lauren R. Stauffer, Holton; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thayne Stauffer. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be in Olive Hill Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. She was born March 27,1916, in Linn, Mo., to John Newton and Roberta Campbell Laughlin, and spent her early life in Linn, Mo., and Houston. She lived in Kansas City, Kan., before she moved to Topeka 10 years ago. She was a member of the Assembly of God in Kansas City Kan., where she was the church pianist and was a member of the Assembly of God in Topeka. She was married to John A. Stauffer on Oct. 23,1934, in Joplin, Mo. He died April 3,1995. Survivors include daughters, Phyllis Rissen and Marion Miller, both in Topeka; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Family Life Centre, 3710 N. Topeka. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Stauffer will lie in state after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. | 10072 |  | Obituary- Stauffer, Thayne Stauffer Thayne W. Stauffer, 68, of rural Holton, died at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka late Sunday evening, March 30. He was born July 4, 1917 near Holton, the son of Russell and Lottie Stephenson Stauffer. He had lived all his life in the Holton community. Thayne had worked 33 years for the State of Kansas Road Maintenance Department and was shop foreman upon his retirement. On March 26, 1941 he was married to Arlene L. Stuver. She preceded him in death February 14, 1981. Surviving him are two daughters, Barbara Matthews, Onaga, and Tharon Gay Brey, Whiting; also a son, Rodney Stauffer, Holton; two brothers, Auswell Stauffer and Lauren Stauffer, Holton; seven grandchildren; two step grand-children; four great-grandchildren; Joetta Walrod and her husband, Roy, and their three children. Joetta lived in his home for a time. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, at the Mercer Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Holton Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Mercer Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Mercer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. | |

She was born Sept. 17, 1917, in Delia, Kansas, the only child of Jesse and Stacia McClain Linsacum. Following her father’s death in 1923, she attended school briefly in Topeka, then lived in Lamar, Colorado, with her grandmother and aunt, until returning to Kansas in June 1925 to reside with her mother and stepfather, George E. Eakin, near Delia. She attended Stach, Stony Point, Nieve and Adrian one-room grade schools and graduated as valedictorian from Delia High School in 1934. She married Auswell F. Stauffer of the Pleasant Valley community west of Holton on April 29, 1936. After living on two farms, they moved to their own farm in 1945. In addition to rearing a family and helping with farm work as well as keeping the home and garden, she was actively engaged in community activities for many years. Mrs. Stauffer was a 4-H Club leader for more than 30 years, serving as community leader for the Pleasant Valley Rustlers Club and advisor for the Jackson County Junior Leaders. She served on the Jackson County Agricultural Extension advisory committee and as a Sunday School teacher, WSCS president and missions chairman at Circleville United Methodist Church where she was a member. She was a Democratic committee woman for Banner Township and president of the Jackson County Democratic Women’s Club, a township election official, coordinator of the Jackson County CROP campaign, secretary of the Olive Hill Cemetery Association and member of the Pleasant Valley Neighbors Club. The Stauffers were married 69 years prior to his death in 2005. She is survived by sons, Russell E. Stauffer, Sabetha, Auswell F. "Bud” Stauffer, Mayetta, Bradford W. Stauffer, Holton; daughter Sharon E. Stauffer Goldsworthy, Germantown, Tennessee; 9 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Lyle was born November 25, 1944 at Topeka, KS, the son of Ira LaVerne “Chick” and Ernestine Mae “Ernie” Trude Stebbins. He was a 1962 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and a 1975 graduate of Kansas State University, earning a B.S. degree Major in Animal Science and Industry with a Minor in Dairy Science. Lyle was self employed most of his working life, serving as a bookkeeper for Jefferson County Rural Water District #7 for many years. He also worked for Protection One Security Company in Lawrence, KS, as well as owning and operated Jeffco Video Rental and Sandwich Shop in Oskaloosa for several years before he retired. He was a member of Oskaloosa Church of Christ and was a former Boy Scout Leader in Oskaloosa for many years. Lyle married Sue A. Means on September 5, 1964 at Oskaloosa, She survives at their home. She also had worked at the Rezac Sale Barn. Mrs. Steele was a member of the St. Marys United Methodist Church, the Senior Center and the Sunflower Club. Willa enjoyed traveling, quilting, genealogy and bowling. She was named after the poet Willa Cather. On October 25, 1933 she was united in marriage to Clifford E. Steele at Topeka. He preceded her in death on January 14,1991. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alvina on November 27, 1937, a son, Clifford Norman Steele on December 20, 1992, a grandson, Rodney Steele on July 24, 1991 and a son-in-law Richard Lenherr on December 30,1980. She passed away October 8, 1956, at the age of 83 years, 1 month and 13 days. She moved to Kansas at the age of seven years and lived the rest of her life in the Willard and Rossville communities. She was united in marriage to Frank Steffee on December 5, 1888. To this union six children were born: four daughters, Amy Meade, Rossville; Jessie Parr, Topeka; Florence Parr, Topeka; Mary Reaser, who preceded her mother in death in 1919. Two sons: Will Steffee, Auburn; Frank Steffee, Jr., Jefferson, Oklahoma. There are 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Steffee was a member of the Rossville Methodist church and a Charter Member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was a devoted wife and loving and kind mother. He preceded her in death in 1978. Agnes worked for 43 years at the Santa Fe Railroad. She was a devout member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Agnes is survived by her sons, Jim Stein, Aurora CO and Jeff Stein (Liz), San Jose CA; grandchildren, Brian Nix, James Stein, Cassandra Fisher, Matthew Stein and Alexandra Stein; great-grandchildren, Destin Nix and Noah Nix; siblings, Marguerite Bond, Delia KS and John Clark, Emporia KS. She was also preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Gene Clark, Monica Doll, George Clark and Joe Clark. She graduated from The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at The University of Kansas in 1992 and went on to a successful 17-year career at Marketshare Publications in Overland Park, KS. Monica married Jay Steiner on Oct. 1,1994 and has two children, daughter Lauren Grace and son Lance Matthew of the home. Monica enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, exercising, cooking, traveling and being with friends, but nothing delighted her more than being with her loving family. Throughout her journey with cancer, she was an inspiration to many. She was recognized with The Adversity Award from the Kansas City Sports Commission's WIN organization for her courageous approach to continue to live strong throughout her battle. She was proud of her efforts with The University of Kansas Cancer Center to bring more awareness and research to fight metastatic cancer. Proceeding her in death were her mother, Genevieve (Grace) Matyak, father, Paul Frank Matyak, and brother Paul Joseph Matyak. Roland Curtis "Steve" Stephan, 81, a resident of the Rossville and Willard area, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 at the Colmery-O’Neil VA Medical Center. He was born Aug. 3, 1927 in Nortonville, the son of Harvey Lee and Hazel Pauline Curtis Stephan. He had lived in the Rossville/Willard area since 1972. Steve served in the US Navy for 27 years before retiring in 1972. After his retirement, he attended Clark’s School of Business. He worked for a while for Rossville Insurance Agency. He was a member of Topeka North Post #400 American Legion, FRA, MOAA, PVA, DAV, Cryptologic Association. He also served as President of the Resident Council of Building 6 VAMC. He married Katherine C. "Pat" Collins on Feb. 6, 1952 in Arlington, VA. She died April 4,1995. Survivors include his daughter, Joan M. Temple of the home, and a son, James Lee Stephan of Gulf Breeze, FL.; three grandchildren; a brother, Leonard Stephan of Lajunta, CO; two sisters, Verna Mae Young of Galena, KS and Donis Reser of Kansas City, MO. Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in the All Faiths Chapel at the VA Hospital.
