McPherson Dead
After Lingering Illness He Passed Away Thursday Nov. 28

Lived Here Over 40 Years
Came to Rossville When Only Six White Families in Town Site

After a protracted illness that extended over several months the life of C.C. McPherson ended Thanksgiving morning.

Death was not unexpected. With unusual fortitude the man who was known and honored by Rossville and the entire community watched the approach of the Grim Reaper and met him smilingly.

And it was characteristic of the man. In all the long years of his life here (he came to Rossville when a boy) Mr. McPherson met trouble and adverse conditions with a suffering face. He lived the clean life of a Christian and entered the valley of the shadow of death with a brave heart that had accepted the divine teachings of the Christian religion.

Reared practically an orphan, Mr. McPherson fought the battle of his early life almost alone.

He was a son of Thomas and Mary McPherson and was born at Paola, in Orange County, Ind., March 23, 1857.

When he was only four years old his mother died leaving himself, a brother, sister and father. Five years later (in 1863) Mr. McPherson with his sister Addie, now Mrs. Ellen A. Shafer, of Toledo, [error in article that leaves something out] that were close friends of their parents.

They lived two years at Big Springs and then came to Rossville.

The Bush family, with whom Mr. McPherson and his sister came to Rossville, were the fourth white family to settle here. It was shortly after he came to this city that Mr. McPherson's father died.

Mr. McPherson was one of the six members of the first Sunday school that was organized in Rossville. The other members were, Addie McPherson (now Mrs. E.A. Shafer), Alice Gabby [Gabbey] (now Mrs. McCabe), Anna Gabby [Gabbey] (now Mrs. Gutshall), Anna Beal (now Mrs. Cox) and Henry Beal.

Mr. McPherson's first employment in Rossville was by Cyrus Higginbotham. Later he farmed with John Reid and at the age of 17 started the livery business that he has owned continuously to the time of his death.

Mr. McPherson often related to his family how he obtained his start in the livery business. By careful economy and trading he acquired a spring wagon and a team. Mr. McPherson used to describe his first team with much enjoyment. He said that one was blind and another spavined and that a careful estimate of his first equipment would not have been written in large figures.

Obituary- MacPherson, Clarence C. 2
And from this small beginning earned entirely by his own efforts, Mr. McPherson realized the real estate, the large stables and the stock that he left at his death.

His life was a success.

When 27 years old, Mr. McPherson was married to Miss Minnie S. Miller, daughter of the late Bradford Miller. Four children were born to them, three of whom, with their mother, survive. They are, Clarence M., Virgil and Helen.

Mr. McPherson was for years a member of the Presbyterian church and at the time of his death was a deacon.

He was a charter member of the Rossville camp of the Modern Woodmen of America, and for many years was captain of the team of that organization. He was Venerable Consul of that order at his death.

The funeral was held last Saturday afternoon from the Presbyterian church. The Reverend George E. Chatfield conducted the services.

Many beautiful floral offerings were sent by Mr. McPherson's friends.

Among them was a particularly beautiful design - the emblem of the Order of the Modern Woodmen of America.

The church was crowded to the doors by friends who came to look for the last time upon the face of their friend. The service was attended not only by the residents of this city and community, but by friends and relatives from Topeka, St. Marys and other cities. Among the relatives and friends who attended from Topeka were: Mrs. A.T. Lucas and daughter Helen, Mrs. Frank Parr, Mrs. Frank Lewis, Mrs. Frank Summers, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Summers, Mrs. Frances Crossley, Mr. Wm. Miller and family, Mr. Clyde Miller, R.F. Hodgine and Oscar Alexander.

Among those attended from St. Marys were: Mr. and Mrs. N.E. McPherson and daughter Hattie, Mr. and Mrs. R.C. McPherson and Mr. and Mrs. H.G. McPherson. The St. Marys camp of the M.W.A. also attended the services.

The burial was in the Rossville cemetery.

Obituary- Magill, Abram
Death of Dr. Magill
Dr. A. G. Magill, an old resident of Shawnee county, died suddenly at his residence near Silver Lake Sunday. The funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 o’clock from the M. E. Church in Silver Lake.

Dr. Abram Grove Magill was born in St. Clare Ohio in 1833 not far from the Ohio river which his grandfather, Chas. Magill, had crossed with his family from Virginia in order that his children might not be reared where slavery was in Virginia. That Dr. Magill should end his earthly career in Kansas seems significant but fitting in view of the fact that although the son of a large slave owner, his father was willing to leave behind him all the advantages of old family connections in order that he might also leave slavery behind.

Abram was the youngest of thirteen children among who were represented creditably and sometimes prominently in several professions, including the clergy and various business pursuits.

Only one member survives, sister Kate, the widow of Jas. McFarland, of Cincinnati Ohio. Dr. Magill obtained his college and medical education in Ohio from which place he went to Wisconsin for a short time in order to take care of his next brother, Rev. Henry T. Magill, who was struggling against a fatal illness. He moved to Missouri after the death of his brother and at Tipton Mo., married Mrs. Margaret Kelley. They settled at Silver Lake Kansas 31 years ago where he continued the practice of medicine carried on a drug store and was interested in the Insurance business.

He has for many years been prominent in the work of the Methodist church and had a wide acquaintance among its members and clergy. In addition to the widow Dr. Magill leaves three daughters, Mrs. C. L. Dolman of Lawrence, Mrs. Levi Neiswender of Topeka and Mrs. J. C. Bradley of Rossville, a step son, J. S. Kelley of Silver Lake and eight grandchildren.

MRS. MAGILL PASSES OVER
Dies at Rossville at the Home of Her Daughter, Mrs. Hook

With the death, Monday morning, April 10, 1916, of Mrs. Margaret Magill, widow of the late Dr. A. G. Magill, there passed away another link which unites Silver Lake to its past. The end came at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. P. Hook, at Rossville, at the ripe age of 87.

When Mrs. Magill remained at Rossville all winter and spring her friends here knew it was because she was too feeble in body to come home. She loved her home here and not of her own free will would she remain away from it long at a time. Though sons and daughters were willing to care for her, she preferred to live in her own house, though in solitude.

But all winter she had been failing in health, and her friends knew her end was near.

Here she lived next door to Mrs. Hannah Oliver, whose death early in the winter removed perhaps the oldest inhabitant of this city.

Mrs. Margaret E. Magill was the daughter of Miles and Ann Sweeney. She was born at Middleton, Del., May 9, 1828, being the second of a family of nine children, surviving all of them.

Obituary- Mann, Josephine 2
Mann
Mrs. Josephine Mann died Oct. 5. Though she was born near Delia on Sept. 14, 1910, she spent all her life close to Hoyt and was a very active member of that Jackson County community. Her family remembers her with this tribute:

When the shadows of eternity close around the life of a beloved member of one’s family there is a natural desire to say a last… and long… and lingering farewell.

Jo was the oldest of six brothers and sisters, with a dynamic and talented mother, Katie Flynn Argo, from County Tipperary, Ireland, who claimed to be the best pitch player in Jackson County and a father, Harry Argo, with a name which is ancient, and honored, and history related in Greece.

Our family moved to a farm about six miles northeast of Hoyt in 1920. Jo completed elementary school at Point Pleasant. Our father bought a pony, named Billy, for a trivial sum at a country auction. After he had ownership he was asked if he knew that horse was afraid of cars and shied at anything and everything. Dad understood then why there had been no competition in the bidding.

But Billy carried Jo safely back and forth to Hoyt High School for four years. Her high school years were extremely happy. She was a good student who enjoyed the stimulus of study and classwork. She was active in sports, particularly basketball, and she participated in most of the extracurricular activities of the school.

After graduating she realized a dream she had held from early childhood, to be a teacher. She taught Rock School east of Hoyt for two years, and then our home school, Point Pleasant.

It was after high school graduation and during her early year of teaching that the romance between Jo and Glenn began. It culminated in a love affair lasting over half a century.

Jo had an abundance of energy and ambition and drive; any project or task she undertook was carried through to completion with dedication.

She had a special talent for friendship; she valued her friends highly and gave them total loyalty.

Her brothers and sisters regarded her as a pillar of special strength. In her words and actions there were always healing overtones. Each of us has his or her private and cherished memories.

But her heart and soul were centered in her family, with Glenn, and Dale, her much-loved daughter-in-law, Sandy, and her two grandsons, Steven and Paul. Her family was her core.

A prayer is offered for her new adventure into eternity:

Eternal Father, we thank you for sending this inspirational life to share our days. Jo will be sorely missed. In your goodness and mercy we ask that you embrace her, your child now, and welcome her into your heavenly kingdom.

We are sending you, our very best.

Mrs. Mann will be missed by many whose lives she touched. She was valedictorian of her Hoyt High School class of 1928. She was an active member of United Methodist Church of Hoyt and the various church organizations. She was a member and past worthy matron of Hoyt Chapter No. 189 of Order of Eastern Star. She had been an active 4-H header for many years.

After her retirement in 1975 from Kansas Department of Revenue at Topeka, she became more involved in many areas of the community. She was a census enumerator for this area, the chairman of the election committee of Douglas Township and secretary for the Hoy Cemetery.

She was married to Glenn Mann on May 3, 1932 at Topeka. He survives.

Other survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Sandra Mann of Colorado Springs, and two grandsons, Steven and Paul. She is survived also by two sisters, Mrs. Irene Ross of Palm Desert, Calif.; and Mrs. Bernadine Maxwell, Whiting and two brothers, Bernard Argo, Kansas City, Kan., and Bob Argo, Topeka.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct 8, at the Hoyt United Methodist Church with Rev. Barbara Grosenbacher officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Carolyn Rose and a song offered by Mrs. Beth Fenske.

Active pallbearers were Dean Tuck, John Bostwick, Howard Feischer, Mark Joy, Charles Bostwick and William Donahue with Harry Oldweiler as honorary pallbearer.

Flower ladies were Clyda Bostwick, Alberta Tuck, Lucille Harris, Marjorie Bostwick and Bonnie Williams. Memorials were made to Hoy United Methodist Church. We will miss this very dynamic wife, mother, sister and friend.
